THE BOYS Showrunner Confirms Series Will End Differently To The Comic; Addresses Black Noir Twist - SPOILERS

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke has now confirmed that he has no intention of ending the series the same way as the comic, while also weighing in on the much-discussed Black Noir twist...

From the very first episode of The Boys, it seemed clear that the series would not be a direct adaptation of the controversial comic book by Garth Ennis, and as the show progressed, we began to see more significant deviations from the source material.

One of the biggest changes involved silent Seven member Black Noir.

Spoilers follow.

Towards the end of the comic run, we learn that Noir has actually been a clone of Homelander all along, and was responsible for committing the leader of the Seven's most heinous crimes. Showrunner Eric Kripke was asked if he ever considered sticking to the comics for this particular twist during an interview with Variety.

"No, and I don’t mind saying it. In the comics he’s a clone of Homelander this entire time and is actually the one doing all these horrific things. And again, it’s a hell of a twist. But it’s like, well wait, the villain I’ve been following isn’t really the villain. And mileage varies, and I’m sure fans are mad I’m not going that way, but that felt not as satisfying to me. I’m like, if I’m going to follow this villain, I want this guy to be the villain. So I was never really into the clone idea.

Plus, cloning feels like too — I’m going to sound silly — but cloning feels too magical for the show. We try to say that superheroes are the only slippery banana, and that everything else we try to make as grounded as possible."

The Boys comic doesn't give many of the main characters a happy ending, but the show has already proved to be a little less ruthless and more empathetic towards its motley crew. Should we expect at least a few more fan-favorites to survive to the end of the series?

"There’s some stuff in the comic that we couldn’t do even if we wanted to. I think, look, there’s some shocking twists in the comic, but I would want them to be just a little more emotionally satisfying. And so the ending I have in mind is — certainly as elements that it’s inspired by that. But it’s not the ending from the comics."

What do you make of this? Would you prefer if the show stuck a bit closer to what happens on the page? Drop us a comment down below.

"The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power," reads the official season 4 synopsis. "Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late."

Returning cast members include Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Cameron Crovetti, along with new recruits Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

The first three episodes of The Boys season 4 will be available to stream from June 13th, with new instalments dropping weekly through to the season finale on July 18.

You're right, Erik. You sound like an idiot. Your show has magic pills that make you invincible. And shocker that your show isn't following the material. I think we've all put that together by now, kiddo.

@McMurdo - It really is that hard for them to just give fans a straight adaptation sometimes. Why would you do that? I know it's an "adaptation", but yeah...

@McMurdo - does that give you a rash? It’s been pretty well established that Noir is not a clone unless it’s the current incarnation. You really told Kripke off! Good boy, kiddo!

@The1st - why don’t you just read the comic if you want a straight adaptation? What is it about seeing it in live action that is so exciting for you?

@Dotanuki - Well, I didn't say it was or I couldn't. I've just watched a lot of IP try to subvert expectations in live action. There's arguments on both sides. Sometimes it works...sometimes it doesn't. I already basically said I didn't expect one and fans shouldn't either anyway. If anything, it makes me wonder how it will all play out.

@Dotanuki - couldn't give a lesser shit about noir or cloning. That isn't the point kiddo!

@McMurdo - you decided to ignore everything he said after that, which is super powers are the only "slippery banana"; meaning he acknowledges that a compound that gives people super powers is magical, but it's the only suspension of disbelief that he wants for the show.

McMurdo - 6/19/2024, 5:16 PM
@EgoEgor - see I didn't ignore that part at all. That's the point. Saying it out loud doesn't make it less ridiculous.

@McMurdo - Still doesn’t mean they should just throw whatever in there.

@The1st - Then go read the comic 😂 No adaptation has ever been exactly like the source material

@The1st - Sometimes doing a straight adaption is great...

...but sometimes the source material is outdated in various ways

...sometimes some thing in print don't translate well to screen

...sometimes the source material isn't that good with a lot of room for improvement

Most of all however oft you want to inject your own ideas into a concept and don't want people to know the entire plot in advance from a google search if planning some aspects of mystery and plot twists.

Can adaptions be worse than the source, deffo in many cases, sometimes however an adaption can be far better than the source (opinions will vary).

@EgoEgor - Think the bigger slipper banana isn't it is too magical, when we know science has already cloned animals, and more having full on cloning creates the problem you can kill a character and be tempted to bring them back which...

...can create issues.

@newhire13 - I don't even disagree with that statement.

@newhire13 - "No adaptation has ever been exactly like the source material "

Some came quite near. Like Crying Freeman for example

@McMurdo - I think we've all put that together by now, kiddo.

This is a fanbase that still complains about the lack of source accuracy in the genre pretty regularly, so the chances aren't that high a lot of people figured it out yet.

@Reeds2Much - lol......fair enough 🤣
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 6/19/2024, 8:02 PM
@McMurdo - I don't know what you're complaining about since he acknowledges that human super powers are magical and unrealistic, even more so than cloning because he acknowledges that it might sound silly to make the comparison.

His logic is that he wants to make the show grounded, other than the super powers. So human cloning, which you may be shocked to learn, is not scientifically plausible today, so it is a sort of magic, another suspension of disbelief in the story that he doesn't want.

You might disagree with him on using clones, but he's not talking like an idiot, you're just refusing to listen to his words.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 6/19/2024, 8:11 PM
@EgoEgor - I don't care about clones at all. I think calling the show grounded is a choice. Hard to refuse listening to his words when they are in bold black print. He's trying to say I'm not following the source material because I'm making a grounded show whilst going on to explain his show isn't grounded in the slightest. It's okay if you don't get it. Just one mans opinion.
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 6/19/2024, 8:12 PM
@Apophis71 - that is also another. But I think he's goal is making a show that reflects today with superheroes. Naturally, people having super power is one suspension of disbelief(a huge one), since human cloning is magical in today's eyes(animals are much simpler problems than humans, we're still not there), he doesn't want to use it, because that's another suspension of disbelief. That's all I think he's saying.
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 6/19/2024, 8:26 PM
@McMurdo - no, I get you, I do understand what you're saying.

At the same time I get what he's saying.

Yes it's hard to call a show with superheroes a truly grounded show, this isn't Law & Order.

But what he's saying is contextual, he wants his superhero show to feel grounded in that world. Where it feels like it could be happening in our world(tonally, despite the super powers).

Human cloning, while theoretically plausible and likely, is still a sort of a magical thing to us today.

Now if you want disagree with him being unfaithful to the source, I think that's more than fair.

@McMurdo - you must be real pissed than that house of the dragon didn’t include yhe threat of sexual assault on a child. Or that theirs less assault as a whole in the boys.no…? Than stop dying on weird hill for no reason
McMurdo
McMurdo - 6/19/2024, 8:47 PM
@EgoEgor - human cloning is far more grounded than taking a pill to become Homelander. But that's just my take.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 6/19/2024, 8:49 PM
@cham2119 - I'm not arguing for the show to follow the source material. I loved House of Dragon Season 1. And i loved this first episode of s2. NEXT.

@McMurdo - I like the show the way it is and could give 2 sh1ts if it follows the comics. I'd wager that 75-80% of the general audience haven't read the comics nor even heard of "The Boys."

Everyone needs to lighten the frick up.

So let me get this straight, superpowers is OK but cloning (which exists in the real world) isn't realistic enough?

Even if you argue we havent perfected it on humans, let's face it the main reason for that is ethics. Something vought clearly doesn't care about.
