THE BOYS Showrunner Eric Kripke Elaborates On Decision To End Show With Season 5; Addresses Franchise's Future

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke has talked more about the decision to end the series with its upcoming fifth season, confirming that, "This story of The Boys will not continue on." Read on for details...

Eric Kripke has repeatedly said he has a five-season plan for The Boys and, earlier today, we learned that he's sticking to it. Yes, the series is ending with season 5, a shock given the apparent popularity of the Prime Video series which has so far spawned animated and live-action spin-offs.

Entertainment Weekly caught up with the producer and writer to get further clarification on the decision to wrap up one of the streamer's biggest shows.

"I'm excited to finally execute a 5-season plan," Kripke admits, referring to his five-season plan for Supernatural (a show which lasted a decade beyond that). "That's very exciting for me."

"Part of it is such a wonky stupid screenwriter thing but three and five are the big magical numbers for writing. Three is movie acts, TV acts are five," he adds. "Jokes are a runner of three for five. Five just seems like a good round number. It's enough to tell the story but also bring it to a climax without wearing out its welcome."

"It's been hard because I haven't been able to tell everyone. I was thrilled to finally be able to get the word out there."

As for the impact this will have on season 4, which launches later this week, Kripke says, "That was part of my argument: No one can watch this season without feeling at the end like 'It's ending next year right?' So we might as well announce it so people can watch it with that cool epic heading-toward-the-end feeling, which is what I'm hoping for."

Despite many of the reviews for the fourth season pointing out that The Boys' premise is wearing thin, it's been "Certified Fresh" at 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, so this decision is obviously unrelated to those comments from critics.

However, while The Boys is ending, it appears Amazon's spin-off plans - including Gen V season 2 and a possible Mexico-set series - are unaffected.

"This story of The Boys will not continue on," Kripke confirms. "With any luck, Gen V will continue on, there will be hopefully a couple others in development that we're talking about that can continue on, but The Boys story ends in season 5."

A press release confirming plans to end the show with season 5 featured these additional comments from the showrunner:

"The Boys could be the best job I'll ever have. What other show allows me to write about politics, capitalism, family, and exploding genitalia, though not in that order, the cast and crew are deeply grateful to Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to tell this story for another season. My only problem is that since this year promises to be free of any conflict or misinformation, we're not sure what to write about."

Are you disappointed that The Boys' time is up?

Love the show, and love a great ending. Looking forward to it.

Wise. No need to drag it.

All great news to me! Looking forward to the conclusion and how it shapes the world for the spin offs

@Evansly - interested to finally see Supes outside of the US via Mexico so hood that happens otherwise don’t know what they could spin-off?

Maybe other different places like India or London.

Evansly - 6/11/2024, 2:44 PM
@TheVisionary25 - I completely agree. I'm also curious on how the V gets to those places. Did Vaught secretly sell them? Are these consequences from when Homelander tried to give V to the terrorists?

TheVisionary25 - 6/11/2024, 2:46 PM
@Evansly - correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t Vought worldwide already?

I feel like Supes were already around the world though I could be badly misremembering

@TheVisionary25 - I am certain they are an international company but unless I have missed it, there has been 0 indication that anywhere but the US has legally purchased and used Compound V. Definitely doesn't it mean it hasn't happened but I could see there being in world conflict if another country had supes

@Evansly - true

Hmm , I’ll try to research it later I could see them dealing with the repercussions of Homekander illegally selling Compound V in S1 to terrirusts so he could get them in the Military.

@TheVisionary25 - Let me know if you come up with anything! I only rewatched season 3 in preparation for the premiere so I am only really fresh on that season

Don't pull a Young Justice and get worse every season because it takes too long to get to the point.

@MCUKnight11 - S1 remained that shows best , I did like 2 but it was weaker

I just lost interest in S3 and haven’t watched the remainder of it or 4.

Newsflash Black noir is now a Homelander clone, and the two will battle at the end while Homelander is in the White House.

HashTagSwagg - 6/11/2024, 2:48 PM
@JobinJ - Yeah but if it does go that way then where's the inner conflict now since Noir didn't make Homelander loose his marbles and Homelander didn't make him snap because he hasn't been shadowing after all this time, waiting for that kill order.

@JobinJ - maybe they’ll switch the clones role to Ryan, becoming a horrible person and finally shattering Homeys mind.

Good, I like when shows have a clear ending planned rather than drag things out for popularity sake.

this is welcome news, as someone who LOVES this show. I like him having a vision, sticking to it, and getting us a nice ending. Hope Stranger Things can do the same.... we all saw what happened when there was no vision and clear ending; Looking at you Game of Thrones

@MotherGooseUPus - NFX made a massive mistake by not renewing the show after the success of season 1 for 4 additional seasons and shoot it back to back. Would have saved tons of money and time

Lol on him saying that he finally gets to execute a 5 year plan since Supernatural went for another 10 years after he left and his other shows like Revolution & Timeless got cancelled prematurely

Anyone know what the original ending for SPN would have been?.

Anyway , looking forward to the final 2 seasons of The Boys and to finally being able to check out Gen V sometime soon!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Pretty sure it would end the way Season 5 ends, Dean living with his girlfriend and her kid, and Sam dying to save the world, a fitting end.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 6/11/2024, 3:02 PM
@Webheaded225 - ok so no tease then of Sam having somehow survived?

I do like it , it’s a nice reversal of how they both started with Dean in the hunting life and Sam not wanting to be in that.

Thanks!!.

Good choice! This show is great and amazing but there’s no need to drag it out more than needed. I loved Supernaturals 8th and 9th seasons but the show should have ended with season 5 and the defeat of Lucifer. Maybe go on with a Castiel spin-off but the Winchesters story would have ended perfectly there.

Some hopes: Homelander as president being faced with his clone, maybe that becomes Ryan as a horrifying look into himself. Soldier Boy kicking ass. Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins (why yes I’m a Supernatural fan, how could anyone tell?)

Five seasons is a good run. Another plus is that it will have a planned ending. So many shows that I have personally liked, that were ended without a conclusion.

I'm going to hold off on watching any of them until I see how the final episode turns out because I don't want to get that invested in a show that ends with a Game of Thrones/Lost type ending. I'll wait but I'm glad to hear they have a planned ending.

You either die a Breaking Bad or you live long enough to see yourself become Game of Thrones.

I think all shows should end after 4-5 seasons max. Ted Lasso was perfect with 3 seasons. It needs t leave you motly satisfied, but just wanting a bit more. Too many shows go well past their best before date.

Perfect timing on this, its something I have been thinking about a lot in the last while; like he said, three seasons is a perfect beginning, middle and end, you can play out character story arcs. With arcs concluded, you can have the developed characters go on to new adventures in a Season 4 and 5....then IF you have an entirely new idea that will make a Season 6 worthwhile, you continue on

Perfect example being other comic book shows; Arrow dealt with Oliver dealing with his past pain, going from being a killer to having a happy ending with Felicity. Then Season 4 had Oliver build on all this, by becoming the true Green Arrow and going on to be the mayor

Same with the Flash, dealt with all the dark speeders who kept killing his loved ones, until he had to face his dark side in Savitar in Season 3, then Season 4 changed it up by having him fight different types of villains then

and funnily enough, both Agents of SHIELD and Legends of Tomorrow both hit their peaks with Season 3, then went off the rails from Season 4 onwards...completely ignoring the universes that created them
