THE BOYS Showrunner Reveals That Starlight's [SPOILER] Was Inspired By... An SNL Sketch

Episode 4 of The Boys saw Firecracker reveal some private information about Starlight, and showrunner Eric Kripke has now revealed the surprising inspiration for the plot point...

This week's episode of The Boys, "Wisdom of the Ages," saw Firecracker continue her smear campaign to turn the people against Starlight, but the jingoistic Supe pushed the former Seven member a little too far when she spilled a secret from her past to the entire world.

Spoilers follow.

On her show, "Truthbomb," Firecracker reveals that Annie and Hughie decided to have an abortion. This proves to be the final straw for Starlight, who powers-up and beats the ever loving crap out of Firecracker on live TV. Later, Annie has a conversation with Hughie about how she agonized over the decision, but ultimately felt that they weren't ready to have a child.

During an interview with EW, showrunner Eric Kripke explained that the inspiration for this particular plot point was an SNL sketch.

"The overturning of Roe v. Wade was happening in real time as we were writing, so it was definitely on everybody's mind. But another inspiration for us was Cecily Strong."

"It really moved me," Kripke recalls of watching the sketch (see below). "What I think we were really trying to get across [on The Boys] is how common it is, and yet so few women can talk about it. So we were like, 'Let's just throw it out there and deal with it.'"

"We spoke to a lot of women who had abortions, but the main thing we wanted to get across was it's not a particularly massive, overdramatic thing," he went on. "It's a thing that thousands and thousands and thousands of women go through," Kripke continues. "We just wanted to normalize it a little bit. If in a big genre show you can talk about it and not have it be the most earth-shattering, apocalyptic moment, but it's a difficult moment that a woman went through and then continued to live her life, we thought there was value in that perspective, which is a perspective that's almost never in TV or movies."

"The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power," reads the official season 4 synopsis. "Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late."

Returning cast members include Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Cameron Crovetti, along with new recruits Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

The first three episodes of The Boys season 4 will be available to stream from June 13th, with new instalments dropping weekly through to the season finale on July 18.

Probably the slowest and weakest episode by far for me. Still good but definitely not up to par. 🤷‍♂️

@AnthonyVonGeek - It was slow. But emotional in many ways

@AnthonyVonGeek - this entire season. Hughie is quoting James Patterson novels in hospital rooms each episode. Frenchie and Kimiko are going season 2 all over again but this time it's on Frenchie and Kimiko is drinking herself into a stupor to cope. Butcher and Ryan are still doing the Butcher and Ryan thing. Mother's Milk and Starlight have no character development or arc and thus, the fans are talking about ozempic and facial reconstruction surgery rather than adequately discussing where they are as characters in this story. Homelander and Ryan are the most interesting thread but lets stop treading water and hurry up and get to Homelander runs for president. This series retreads more than any series I'm recent memory and it's getting by on shock porn/gore. It's a gimmick now.

@McMurdo - stop watching it if it’s so exhausting. You’re a riot! Episode 4- dive into John’s background, progress with Sage and her weakness and conflict between the Boys and Firecracker?

I can understand that a troll is your persona but come on.

@Dotanuki - so your rebuttal to my opinion, which you obviously find so exhausting, yet "ironically" continue to respond to, is that we dove into John's background, got to see Sage has a weakness and conflict between the Boys and Firecracker.

So literally everything I laid out above stands then. Give yourself a real pat on the back here bucko!

@McMurdo - I have little to no desire to get through episode 1 of season 4. I've tried like three times now. Perhaps a S3 recap would help, but I'm like 97% meh..

Imagine a sketch like Brian Fellows becoming one of their plot points, haha.

Brian Fellows was an older Tracy Morgan sketch.

@IAmAHoot - That would have made it a better episode.

This for some reason was the darkest episode thus far for the season. Some real sadistic things with homelander and dark emotional topics for frenchie and starlight

@Vigor - Eventually the series had to go a more serious route. Because at some point Vought is a background piece because the real enemy is Homelander.

Starlight can’t catch a break lol but I did enjoy seeing her beat the crap out of Firecracker.
She annoyed me the moment I saw her onscreen, which is a testament to the actress , just like Stormfront.
These actresses are doing a great job at making their characters really unlikeable.

I just hope we also get a moment down the line where Homelander gets the crap beaten out of him by either all of The Boys or a powered up Butcher.
I know they kinda did last season but I still feel like Homelander had the upper hand in those fights , even with Queen Meave

In zionist Kripke's puppet show, he makes the good "left" puppet beat up the bad "right" puppet. His solution to political debate is to just beat up the other side.

Such brilliant writing. I can't believe they went there!

Absolutely brutal episode. Excessive, even for The Boys. But still very effective.

This episode was pretty wild. Although she's getting shit for it, I'm glad Annie beat the shit outta Firecracker. I think she'll get the Joffrey Baratheon cheer when she finally gets killed.

And Homelander is just... every episode that man reaches a whole new level of psychopathy.
