THE BOYS Star Laz Alonso Addresses His Widely Discussed Weight Loss As Mother's Milk In Season 4

Much has been said about Laz Alonso's dramatic weight loss in season 4 of The Boys, but the actor himself has chimed in and revealed how and why he ended up shedding 40lbs for his return as Mother's Milk.

Ever since we got our first look at The Boys season 4, much has been said about actor Laz Alonso's weight loss.

Having learned nothing from the late Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman's battle with cancer (the internet dubbed him "crack panther" when he was spotted looking slimmer than normal), many fans wasted no time in poking fun at Alonso, going so far as to suggest Mother's Milk must have been recast.

In an interview with Men's Health, Alonso explained his decision to lose weight and revealed that it was both for his own good and something he believed made sense for the character.

"I was heavy on caloric surplus when I first started the show," the actor said. "Season 1 and 2, I wanted to look like the comic. Season 3, we shot during and after COVID and I went from looking like the comic to looking like a very inflated version of the comic."

"Uber Eating every day, eating a lot of pizza, eating a lot of burgers. I discovered Toronto's best pizzas and burgers. I put on close to 40lbs. It didn't hit me until I saw the promotional posters for season 3 and I saw my face. I was like, 'Who the heck is that?' I actually asked Amazon if they had added weight to me. I didn't realise how big I had gotten. For a guy that's six feet, with shoes on, I was pushing 250lbs and it was a lot of weight."

"It wasn't healthy. Before season 4 came around, I wanted to do something real different," Alonso continued. "I always meet with [Erik] Kripke at the top of the season and he told me, 'This season, Mother's Milk is gonna go through a big transition' so I wanted to, in his OCD fashion, to depict that and show that visibly. I went into an extreme calorie reduction. I shaved because now he reports directly to the White House."

"This guy is back into his regimented, military way of running things and you'll see that as the season progresses," the actor concluded.

Unlike Boseman, ill health wasn't the main reason Alonso lost weight between seasons 3 and 4 of The Boys. However, it very easily could have been, so this may serve as a lesson not to so quickly judge someone's appearance. Unfortunately, if the discourse surrounding Erin Moriarty is any indication, little will change.

You can hear more from Alonso in the player below.

@menshealthmag Laz Alonso's look has changed throughout his time on Amazon Prime's "The Boys." In fact, he lost nearly 40 pounds to prep for the most recent season after recognizing what his Achilles heel was: the access to so many food delivery apps. #lazalonso #theboystv #theboysedit #weightlossjouney ♬ original sound - Men’s Health

In The Boys season 4, the world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power.

Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca's son and his job as The Boys' leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it's too late.

The series stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Cameron Crovetti. Season Four will welcome Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

The entirety of The Boys season 4 is now streaming on Prime Video.

Did anyone notice they played the avengers theme only slightly when homelander was standing over soldier boy’s pod.
Good final.

I don’t remember him looking bigger then usual in S3 but maybe I’m just having a hard time recalling that..

Regardless it’s none of my business and it isn’t the internets either but people on the latter never learn..sigh.

Anyway , it was a mix of personal & professional (didn’t think of him being clean shaven due to him reporting directly to Singer & Mallory but does make sense) so let’s leave it at that.

Laz has done great in the role as MM who is the heart of the team imo , love the character and hope he finally gets a happy ending with his family!!.

Glad it was nothing (strictly) more serious, and moreover glad he's found himself in a better place. Juggling big weight changes is never fun.

@IAmAHoot - yep

I’m someone whose weight fluctuates alot so I can sympathize

@TheVisionary25 - I'm often to always in a constant flux, and right now I'm like 15-20lbs or so under where I'd like to be/should be, but I just can't get it back up. Never mind anything else I have going on, with this bruatl heat and my tedious physical job I'm burning far more calories than I can intake, And eating is often a chore for me anyhow when I get this underweight.

And overall, like many others, I don't like discussing it and I can't stand people constantly trying to get me to eat in not-so-veiled attempts. I get why he didn't want to talk about it, especially while the season was still freshly airing.

@IAmAHoot - Yeah, I lost 75lbs since 2021, and I’m in the best shape of my life. But the way there was occasionally hellish. It takes a lot of mental work to wake up early to get to the gym and stick to a specific diet day in and day out.

I’ve done this twice in my life, and I never want to have to do it again.

Good for him. As someone who also put on 30-40 pounds starting with the craziness of 2020 then worked it off last year, it’s always good to hear positive stories from others about their health journey.

I was hearing he had cancer or something. So that's good news. You can't hold against a man to want to be healthier, but at the same time I get that it sucks away the immersion for the show. But good for him nonetheless.

this thread is a perfect example of the difference between how people view mental wellness and body image between men and women.

His costar got absolutely eviserated for decisions that changed her appearance (and I'm still not entirely sure she got work done and it's not just bad makeup and loss of body fat. She looked a lot like season 3 annie in this episode)BUT ultimately made her feel better.

This dude's appearance changes drastically and it's all "good for him man"

@SATW42 - I agree

Ultimately it’s none of our business and Erin did have work done which may or may not be the case, ultimately what matters is if she feels better or not because it’s her own personal thing.

@SATW42 - No, it's the difference between doing something naturally versus artificially. Plastic surgery and weight lost are viewed VERY differently. Had Milk had a bunch of plastic surgery to his face, he would have been lambasted too, like Michael Jackson from Thriller to Bad (and that was before social media).

@ridah - just like her, how do you know if he got work done or not? That's alot of weight. Trailers came out for the show and some people thought they had quietly recast the character, but no one dragged him.

@SATW42 - You're right, we don't know. He could have had lipo or his intestines snipped, but he also could have done it naturally, so it's easier to give the benefit of the doubt for that. But with facial features completely changing, there's no question because that can't happen naturally by her age (except disfigurement diseases).

I actually think he looks better with the extra weight, but from a health standpoint it is good that he lost it.

He looks sick (I don't think the haircut and weird mustache helped). I was actually worried we were about to have another Chadwick Boseman situation.

Can't please some people. They'll talk shit if you're fat, they'll talk shit if you're skinny. It's almost like they don't actually care about anything except talking shit.

@clintthahamster - was just thinking this the other day.
It truly is damned if you do damned if you don't. People make fun of folks that are fat or overweight left and right. A person lose the weight and they still make shitty comments. Crazy.

We live in a society where people are downright miserable as shit to care about a person's weight, especially one they will never meet.
