Here's What Garth Ennis Thought Of The First PREACHER Footage

The first trailer for AMC's live-action Preacher adaptation was recently released to predominantly positive vibes from the online comic book community. But what did the comic's creator think of the first footage of Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer?

Out promoting his new comic series,  A Train Called Love for Dynamite Entertainment, comic book writer Garth Ennis briefly shared his initial thoughts about watching the first trailer for Preacher starring Cooper, Ruth Negga and Joe Gilgun.  Said Ennis, "I never really look at that sort of stuff (stuff meaning online fan response) because it's not my department, but I'm told lots of people are talking about the trailer- so great news for the guys pushing the show. I did hear that Amazon sold out of book one, which is great (so long as they had more than half a dozen copies in stock).  I'm delighted with[the first trailer]. I like Jesse's grim dialogue taking you through it, and his explosion into violence. And Cassidy's little moment at the end is the icing on the cake...I've seen the pilot, which I think is excellent - the trailer hits just the right note. The thought of watching each episode as it's completed, seeing what they've done with the story. They've added a good deal to the basic plot of Preacher, and I've been pleasantly surprised by the results."

A Train Called Love is a 10-issue limited series from Dynamite Entertainment which features art from Mark Dos Santos.  Ennis and artist Steve Dillon originally began their run on Preacher for Vertigo Comics in 1995.

Filming on the pilot of AMC's Preacher adaptation kicked off  in May, according to Seth Rogen's Twitter. Rogen developed the adaptation with Evan Goldberg and Breaking Bad's Sam Catlin. The show will star Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer, Ruth Negga as Tulip O'Hare and Joe Gilgun as Cassidy. Also appearing on the show are Ian Colletti as Arseface, Lucy Griffiths as Emily Woodrow, Elizabeth Perkins as Vyla Quinncannon and Jamie Anne Allman and Derek Wilson as Betsy and Donny Schenck.

Merging with a bizarre spiritual force called Genesis, Texan Preacher Jesse Custer becomes completely disillusioned with the beliefs that he had dedicated his entire life to. Now possessing the power of "the word," an ability to make people do whatever he utters, Custer begins a violent and riotous journey across the country. Joined by his gun-toting girlfriend Tulip and the hard drinking Irish vampire Cassidy, the Preacher loses faith in both man and God as he witnesses dark atrocities and improbable calamities during his exploration of America.

Why does he know so little about his own show?

@CaptShipwreck I agree. As someone who read the comic, I have to watch. Preacher was a masterpiece. Gotta see if this show does it any justice

UltimateTypeFace - He's probably not that involved in its production.

Don't like that we didn't see the word of God in the trailer or anything even hinting at it

I hate Seth Rogen more than SuperCat hates black people, but I loved the trailer.

@ComicsBornAndBred
they're probably going to water it down/filter out the trademark Ennis edge and controversy to get more viewers like they did with TWD

@Scorpion8125

Lots of potty and crotch humor would make him perfect for a Garth Ennis property. That is not a slight against Ennis, he is probably my favorite comic book writer ever. But he certainly isn't above that kind of thing.

I'd venture to say that this is probably going to be toned down. Still looks good though.

This is giving me mixed feelings. I love preacher and it got me back into comics, but the trailer and everything that has been said about the show is making it look like it will be very loosely based on the comics :/

@IronRuhail to be real, it should've been on HBO, SHOWTIME OR CINEMAX. AMC can't show everything. The comic delves into some dark shit. Something tells me you're right, unfortunately...

@ComicsBornAndBred
Which is ashame since the comics are so good and the cast looks pretty awesome, at this moment in time it just seems like a generic drama with the trademark AMC yellow filter

I hear Rogan's surprisingly good in a "straight" (non-comedic) role in Steve Jobs. I haven't seen that movie though.

@IronRuhail I feel like they'll warp it and give it that TWD tone to attract regular viewers. A lot of TWD was changed; a lot of what was done in the comic was canned
