Seth Rogen On PREACHER; Hints At Some Changes From The Comic

The star of the comedy flick Bad Neighbors updates /Film on the progress of the small screen adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's gloriously messed up Preacher, which Rogen is writing along with Evan Goldberg and Breaking Bad's Sam Catlin.

After several attempts to adapt Garth Ennis' controversial comic series for the big screen, fans were delighted to hear that we'd actually be getting an AMC tv show instead. A while back it was announced that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg would pen the script for the project, with Breaking Bad's Sam Catlin on board as executive producer and showrunner. Now in an interview with /Film, Rogen offers an update, and suggests that even readers of the comic will be in for a few surprises when the show airs.

"Me and Evan are writing it write now with the help of Sam Catlin and we’ve come up with a lot of incredibly crazy ideas. [Laughs] It’s a fun thing to riff on and talk about. We’re definitely trying to expand on some of the ideas in the comic and make it that…we love most of the main cornerstones of the comic but we’re trying to make it that even if you’ve read the comic you should not know exactly what to expect from the TV show."

Not a bad thing in my opinion. The likes of The Walking Dead and more recently Game Of Thrones have taken some pretty big diversions from their source material, and are arguably all the better for it. Plus there was no way Preacher was ever going to be adapted exactly as is it appears on the page anyway. What do you guys think will be altered most for the tv screen?

Would they set it in the 90's or update it? Would they still use Kurt Cobain?

a straight adaption of the comic book would be to controversial & we all know you can't upset the religious groups in the states,so we'll have to wait & see what parts of the comic book will make the small screen.

Fact is,you want the comic book story..READ THE COMIC!

Movies are a different medium, all you can hope for is a close approximation.
Hope this turns out good.

Preacher is actually a very spiritual story...bare with me!

It obviously takes the piss out of organized religion...particularly Catholicism..but it also promotes understanding, faith and belief in many ways. That's what I got from it anyway.

Brainiac, yeah that's just guessing by the looks of it. Not a solid enough source to take their word for it.

Seth's Green Hornet is a pretty huge piece of his resume for all of us to over look.
Preacher is a serious story with dark, black humor sprinkled throughout. It is NOT a comedy joke fest.
Yes, I'm concerned.

That being said, let those who love to say,
"WOW – the thing isn't even filming or been cast yet and ALREADY people are freaking out. Give it a chance man!"

Green Hornet
period.

"all you can hope for is a close approximation."

Yes. That is EXACTLY what "fanboys" are demanding.
Comic-focused fans are only disappointed when producers/writers/dirctors change things for no reason at all except to fulfill their own "vision" of what the character "is REALLY all about." And then fall back on the standard ambiguous lame excuse that "what works in comics doesn't work in the movies."

Duh. Of course that is true.
It's a different medium. Duh.

But the goal of moving from one medium to the next SHOULD be to capture the storyline, tone, and character descriptions as "much as possible."

THIS DOES NOT MEAN . . .
Costumes and colors need to be EXACTLY the same.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN . . .
Origins need to be EXACTLY, VERBATIM the same.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN . . .
Story lines need to be EXACTLY, VERBATIM the same.

But it also DOES NOT MEAN . . .
Green Hornet can be a comedy on the same level as The Hangover
it also DOES NOT MEAN . . .
That the Green Goblin has to look like a Mighty Morphin Ranger reject villain.
it also DOES NOT MEAN . . .
That Constantine can't be British.

Look, I know we're not going to get a VERBATIM story line as written by that oft times crazed lunatic, Ennis.
But, it should have the same rules of the fictional universe that he (Ennis) established. The characters should have the same relationships and motivations.

Just don't change Jessie's Voice of God power in to a – I don't know – something like Karma's eye to eye contact, mind control mutant power, and THEN tell me it was changed because it didn't fit into the story or medium.

Dear God, Rogen better not be in it at all.
Unless of course he wants to be Arse Face.

I want this to be as good (better actually) than the walking dead. I love the walking dead comics. I love the preacher comics. If they take the same liberties with this that they have with the walking dead, I'll be very very satisfied. Slight alteration of the timeline, throw in some really good staple characters from the comic. Make sure they get in the majority of the dominating story arc from the comic. It should be really good. Not a big fan of rogen. But I have seen things I like that he plays in and writes.

I really don't get why fans want an exact copy of what happens in the comics to b translated on film or television. What's the point in that? It won't be anything new, refreshing or surprizing because i will already knw what to expect. All i ask for is faithful representation of the characters involved. I likebthe fact that The Walking Dead is going dwn a different path frm the comics. I am up to issue 126 in the xomics, & the thing about the AMC series is that i will never be able to guess what will happen next.

I think James Franco (with rogan involved its a big possibility) could make a pretty good Custer and obviously Micheal Fsssbender would be the perfect Cassidy, I dnt mind it diverging from the source a bit, all that worries me is that they dont shy away from the controversial stuff (not that any of its particularly offensive to anyone one who isnt a ridiculous reactionary twerp) but i have high hopes theres been enough 'controversial' successful tv shows in the last decade to dampen a lot of the studios professional hand ringers and money mens worries i think, i hope..... Rogan obviously loves the source material so Im not all that worried to be perfectly frank.

This could be amazing

It's just a TV show. Quit being so sacred.

All you people worrying that this is gonna end up some kind of rogan apatow esque stoner romp are fu.ckin deluded and just fancy a bit of hand wringing and high horsary, Seth Rogan is obviously a huge fan of the source material he's also an intelligent guy so Im sure he aint gonna crowbar in a lighter or more comedy orientated roganesque angle to the whole affair, Preacher is however pretty [frick]in funny in a dark and satirical way something which I get the feeling some of you web woe is me worriers didnt have the mental faculties to realise when reading the original graphic novels. Get off the bandwagon put down the handbook fellas, just relax this is gonna be good..... it could even be great

Love listening to ppl complain and say ridiculous things before we have seen or heard any news or info on it. Please nerds tools and geeks have patience. If it sucks then u can be the lame looser u are and spend all weekend bashing it online. Until then, reserve ur opinions, which nobody cares about, for yourself.
I have faith because obviously rogen is a big fan and lets be honest preacher is not only better but it's a whole different beast than green hornet. Preacher is a better so I assume it will translate to a better show than hornet was a movie
