@ALegendaryPanda - I'm guessing it was tied to the tree while alive and after he died the soft tissue dissolved, with only his spine keeping him trapped

@HiroTheGeek013 - the zombies and gore are the main reasons why I still watch TWD, and why I'm pretty sure that Fear the Walking Dead will disappoint ... the only good zombie is a lipless, slow walking, half dissolved zombie!

Gotta give it to Nicotero and co. This show has the best looking zombies ever put on film. Movies, TV, anywhere. Hands down. They are so perfect! And they only get better as the world's dead get more and more decayed.

@Xenomorph - I don't agree that the gore is the only reason to watch this show, but I DO agree that the best zombies have no lips and are in a more skeletal advanced state of decay! Fresh zombies look pretty much human and are BORING to look at. So yeah, while I'm looking forward to FTWD, I'm expecting to be underwhelmed by the zombie designs as the plot dictates they can't be nearly as cool.
