John Hawkes Explains Why He Turned Down The Governor In THE WALKING DEAD

About a month ago rumors began to fly that producers for The Walking Dead were interest in the Academy Award nominated actor John Hawkes to play The Governor in AMC's The Walking Dead.

In late January word started leaking out that AMC was looking to fill the villainous role of The Governor with a name actor, and their main focus was on John Hawkes. An acclaimed actor, John seems to get better with each role he takes on, truly shining in HBO's now defunct western, Deadwood and the surprise indie-hit film, Winter's Bone with Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games.) But in early February John's publicist put out a short statement just saying that he would not appear in The Walking Dead. So What happened?

IFC caught up with the actor and asked him about passing up such a coveted role.

“They were kind enough to show interest. It just felt like it wasn’t right for me. I think they’re going to find someone who will do a better job than I would have, and I think they’ll be happy in the end.”

While John does get high praise from critics he isn't exactly that well known, and to pass up on a role this juicy is surprising. It sure would've helped him get some much needed recognition by the mainstream audience, who for the most part only think of him as the ugly guy that could bag the even uglier red haired chick in The Perfect Storm.

The role of The Governor as you know went to British actor David Morrissey who is just as fine, if not better of an actor. I'm sure he is excited for all the scene stealing moments that are sure to come his way when playing this devil of a character.

The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9/8c on AMC.

He would have been perfect. The Governor is someone who lives in the shadow of his younger brother, and John Hawkes is already used to playing that character, as the older brother of the great KENNY POWERS!!!

I am so glad he is not the Governor- I never would have been able to take him seriously after Eastbound and Down!

Could be anywhere from money to he didn't like the character. Maybe the character was just too dark for him and he didn't feel like he could be the kind of guy being the Governor requires.
