Mark Julian Reviews The Walking Dead Episode 203 "Save The Last One"

The first two episodes of The Walking Dead Season 2 were simply some of the show's best yet and I can gladly report, that episode 3 continues that trend. Plus get a sneak peak at Episode 4, "Cherokee Rose".

Well. If you were one of the few people out there complaining that season 2 was light on the zombies thus far then this episode was for you. However, don't fret fans who watch for the emotional spectrum, there's plenty of that in this episode as well, specifically in the scenes where Rick and Lori are waiting by their son's bedside for Shane to return with medical supplies. While the interactions between these two were nicely executed I'm going to focus on the zombie gauntlet and the quest for medical supplies. Now, I have to say that it was no surprise that SPOILER:Otis dies. But it's the way that he dies that truly makes me stand up and applaud my TV. The star of this episode is definitely Jon Bernthal's character, Shane Walsh. His decision at the end of this episode was definitely a turning point or tipping point for his character and you can certainly expect to see a different portrayal of Shane in events to come. This episode also has some great editing, opening with a mini flash-forward of the end and then works back around to this scene and deftly creates the necessary build-up to a gut wrenching moment. The flashbacks shown while Shane was shaving his head were truly well done and really explained why he's giving the mirror crazy eyes.

Not much progression on the other plot lines in this episode but one thing to note is that Carl is now in stable condition thanks to Shane's questionable actions. In regards to the other season 2 story lines, we still don't know what happened to the missing little girl, Andrea remains unsure as to whether she wants to survive or not, and we received a noncommittal answer from Shane in response to Lori's plea that he stays with the group. Also T-Dog and Glenn remain as relatively "walking Redshirts" [see what I did there] due to their lack of storylines.

I rate episode 3 of The Walking Dead:

9.5/10

Episode Zombie Kill Count: 20

Here's an inside look at the episode courtesy of AMC.

Plus, a Sneak Peek at Episode 204 "Cherokee Rose".

Well Glenn actually got some face time this ep. We saw his little talk with Maggie about believing in God. Next week he looks to play an even bigger role. T-dog can go die for all I care.

I'm gonna have to disagree. There are powerful scenes yes, but how long are they going to drag shit out for? Sophia has been lost in the woods for 3 episodes and when you think about it not much has happened. Also, am I the only one that hates Lori and Andrea? Andrea is a whiny bitch, which really is not what she was like in the comic books. Lori always kind of sucked in the books so that is fine, hopefully she is killed off soon enough

Anyone else think the big budget cut the show had is totally noticeable? I mean half this episode took place in a bland looking house and the other half was in the dark. Season 1 was in a big zombie filled city to the woods to the CDC.

I know its only 3 episodes in but it looks like the whole season is going to take place in the woods and a farm. Talk about a big letdown, now we know why Darabont wanted a bigger budget.

@ Ryan I totally agree. That episode last nite was horrible. How long are they gonna look for that girl?? All the wining and crying is killing me. Shane killing Otis was too predictable. This show better pick it up.

spoilerish if they follow the books I guess:

I dont like how they've saved the fate of Shane for S2 so that they can build more rationale behind what happens.

wow just watched that preview, I'd say about 60% of them don't believe his explanation.

@NotU... I agree... I don't know about 60% of them... BUT... Dale sure looks suspicious of his story! Remember, Dale saw Shane aiming his gun at Rick in Season 1... and if I'm not mistaken, in the Season 2 sneak preview that ran after the premiere, there is a quick scene where Dale confronts Shane and says, "I know WHAT kind of man you are"... and Shane looks up at Dale with the same look he had in the mirror from last night's episode....

I still think this is the best show on television right now. If you don't like it, go watch dancing with the stars or something.

Andrea is the only character i don't like. her comic book counterpart was a tough, strong and badass character. In the show she's weak, pathetic, and a zombie magnet. hope they change her to her comic counterpart.

Yeah right. Season 2 has been an utter disappointment. Terribly written characters and dialogue.

Andrea will undergo a reversal. In te books she did not start out strong. It takes a while to become the female version of the sniper from saving private Ryan. Since she sucks so much now it will be a more tangible transformation of humans adapt to survive.... I also write term papers for people if ur interested....

@meloco

I def. understand that as a past LOST-watcher..(since they basically rewrote the direction after S2 in lieu of ABC wanting to make the series longer, +/- the likely rumors that SK ghost wrote the ultimate 'hot chocolate' ending).

But this dragging Shane's role out is venturing into rewriting the series.
It would be like if in an adaptation of the Dark Tower, Roland never let Jake fall
after the waystation.

This was the best episode this season so far, I'm really glad things are finally starting to take off. Also the whole Shane Otis situation was kind shocking, and I'm looking forward to see where thing go from here.

So after reading KittenKisses comment I'm beginning to think that it wasn't just my tv, that most of the scenes were too dark to even see what was going on. My husband kept saying, well its night time, it's supposed to be dark. But if you can't even see what's happening in the scene then what's the point?

He killed Otis so he could make it and slow down the zombies. He probably didn't need to but they are going to start fleshing out his evil side I believe this season.

Shane is a horrible person. Otis was the guy who saved Shane's butt multiple times and how does Shane repay him? He shoots him and lets him get eaten. I hope Otis comes back as a zombie and eats Shane slowly.

That part with Shane and Otis was so predictable -- but I like the way they're playing it out... even if I was expecting it.

They'd best turn Andrea around FAST or her ass is going to get hauled off into the Scrappy heap... and I don't care how many zombies she ends up murdering with a pencil, she'll always be the same, whiny twit. If she doesn't turn her attitude around.

The actress definitely has it in her (she was okay in Silent Hill), but damn... the way she's written is so annoying right now. I don't ever recall having such a negative opinion of Andrea in the comics. I think I was fairly indifferent towards her until they got to the prison.

Holy crap they need to stop dragging this Sophia BS out... unless she's with Tyrese's group or something, this needs to end and they need to find her.

I want to like T-Dog... I really do... but for Christ's sake he needs to stop that black vs. white BS. Whoever wrote him with that dialogue needs to get kneecapped.

Glenn and Darryl are pretty much the best characters right now.

Otis was awesome... far more memorable than he was in the comics. In the comics I just remember there was a guy named Otis, I don't even recall how he dies. Shane's such a douche.

@Mrteaspoon - Boardwalk Empire, Sons Of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, and Dexter are also better written.

What made the comics so great is the idea that anyone could go at any time, and there was always something going on. In this season, it has been stagnant and afraid to make big moves. The chick that plays Andrea needs to take her bitch face off or jump off a damn cliff. Kill Shane. Kill ANY major character. For christ sake T-Dog is still alive. Finally, they need to end this 3 episode search party that is just eating time each episode. Find the god damn barn full of Hershel's zombies from the books at least. Darryl, Rick, Glenn, Maggie, and Dale are the only characters that I give a shit about right now, and that is coming from a die hard fan of the comics. The series is quickly pissing me off
