Robert Kirkman On Taking The Walking Dead TV Show In Different Directions To The Comic!

Discussing how the TV show has given him the chance to mix things up a little with The Walking Dead, creator and writer Robert Kirkman also comments on how Shane's survival is perhaps the best example of that...

In a recent interview with MTV Splash Page, creator and writer of The Walking Dead Robert Kirkman has shared his thoughts on playing "George Lucas" with the small screen adaptation of the hit comic book series, commenting on how this has enabled him to take the characters in new and exciting directions. Of course, as anyone who has read the first six issues of the comic will know, that includes leaving Shane alive... Once again, this video is unavailable outside of the US (be warned, they do make you sit through a commercial before revealing that) but the site were kind enough to provide a brief transcript of the interview which you can also find below.

"To a certain extent, I've told these stories before and I did them my own way in the comic book. I work on the TV show, I'm in the writers room, and it's fun for me to look at it as a do-over. I can fiddle with things. I can play George Lucas, if you will, and I can think, 'Well, what would happen if Shane had lived? How would that change things?'"

"Shane's presence radically alters a lot of different things. Seeing how things are changed by his presence moving through the second season is a lot of fun for me. It ends up bringing in a lot of interesting twists and turns as you'll see from watching the season."

I'm glad they kept Shane around. I like how they made his actions somewhat understandable, even if you can't condone them. I'm surprised to find that I can't totally hate him. Is he the Ben Linus (LOST) of the show?

Keeps it fresh and interesting to those of us that own the comics.

To me, it's like the remake of the dawn of the dead. I was like.. No freakin way should they remake that.. it was a real classic!!

then I saw it... was actually dragged to it, my friends paid for me to see it. opening 10 minutes had me on the edge of my friggin seat!! So, yeah, they could have just called it something else...

but.. we did get now, two versions of the same story.. that really are very very good.

and the running zombies blew me away. I was like.. oh hell no!

anyways.. back to this. It gives them a chance to reimage everything, while still keeping to the same story: thus giving true fans a cool new version of the same story. Like any movie version of the book to film does.

I love it. Some equal the books.. Some don't.. But I am looking forward to the this so much. I love zombies.

I'm loving how the show has beats from the comics and can still throw you for a loop. Great writing, and character development.

As long as Shane eventually bites it the same way he did in the comics I'll be very happy. Also, I hope this means that they'll keep Tyreese around longer this time... that is, if they ever introduce him of course.

they're using a classic LOST 'redemption before re-dump-tion' move.
his action in the last ep will build the case for what a douchenozzle he is.
then it will make it all the more ironic when the boy he risked his life to save,
does what he should ultimately do.

if Shane is still around come prison-time or when a certain sword brandishing badass shows up, then shenanigans on this show. right in the face.

HeyVanity I've never read the comics. If I send my email address, will you email me how Shane dies in the comics?

You know, I'm okay with altering the story but, what I feel the show lacks from the comics is the pace. They've looked or that little girl for three episodes and nothing has really come of it past the first episode. In the books they would spend a while in a location yes, but big things would be happening in the meantime. I feel like they should be able to fit in a TPB worth of story per season. This season so far could have fit in one comic. Also, if you're going to alter the story, make it worthwhile. The comics are sooooo good. The show, even with it's changes, should still be as good if not better than the comics.

...like if you agree. ;)

I bwas actually hating that shane hasnt been killed off yet, been since his current ep with otis and what he did, im actually liking the character, he did what needed to be done, hes the first character to actually have some decent development in the show and its starting to show how much ppl will do anything to suruvive, shanes not gonna be the first one in the group to anything to survive, cant wait to see rick go to the darkside

I enjoy the book and the show. I like not knowing exactly what to expect. AND Shane isn't an evil S O B, he's realistic. We can all say we would never do that, but you don't know until you are there. If you really think about........I would to save my kid or my wifes sister.(She's HOT! and she thinks I'm funny. BAZINGA!)

I´m reading the comic and watching the programme. It´s great and I think that watching the series it´s like a mix of the story line of the comic with a kinda what if...? ´cause you know what could happen but they change it all the time. The script is AWESOME!!!
