Robert Kirkman Reveals How THE WALKING DEAD Comic Book Series Was Originally Going To End

Yesterday, we learned that The Walking Dead will end with issue #193, and in a letter included in the back of that, Robert Kirkman reveals his dark and depressing original ending for the Image series...

Earlier this week, it was revealed that today's The Walking Dead #193 will be the final issue of the series. Image Comics has advertised a number of upcoming issues in order to throw fans off the scent, and we'll have details for you later today about how things wrap up for the long-running series.

In a letter to fans at the back of the final issue, Robert Kirkman sheds some light on how he originally planned to wrap the series up. It sounds like a grim and depressing ending, but one that would have arguably been quite fitting.

Be warned that possible spoilers for the actual issue could be included!

"The big storyline NO WAY OUT ended with Rick proclaiming that Alexandria was a place worth fighting for, that they could no longer keep moving from place to place... they had to take a stand, lay down roots and start building from there. Their nomad days were behind them. Well, for years... that had been planned to be... the end. Rick would make his proclamation, and the speech would end with a big close-up on Rick’s face, you’d turn the page, and Rick’s face would be the same, only it was a statue... and you’d zoom out and see the full statue with some vines growing on the bottom of it... cracks forming... and you’d realize that it was quite OLD.

"We’d keep zooming out until we saw that the statue was in Alexandria, the same place where he gave the speech, but it was different. It was old and rundown, broken windows and missing doors. We would keep zooming out until a zombie walked by, then another... and we’d see that Rick had brought them to Alexandria, given this grand speech about rebuilding civilization and SUCCEEDED to the point that they built a statue to honor him... but in the end, the dead won, society crumbled again, this time seemingly for good... and that was it."

Well, that definitely would have closed the series with a whimper rather than a bang, and it's hard to imagine how fans would have reacted at the time. According to Kirkman, he believes that it was "a TERRIBLE ending. Bleak, sad... made the whole story pointless. What can I say... I was young and most of the endings I wrote or came up with way back then... were pretty bleak."

The Walking Dead continued long past that point, of course, but an argument could definitely be made that now is a good time to wrap things up - especially after Rick Grimes' recent demise.

What do you guys think about this alternate ending for The Walking Dead's comic book series?

Sometimes I have a thing for tragic stuff or bittersweet endings, it’s weird. But for some reason I kiiinda liked that alternative depressing ending.

Well time to see what the real ending will be now in a few hours.

I actually think that's a very interesting ending. Actually kinda great 😂playing with the audience Planet of the Apes style where we think it's all gone well for Rick's future then realise the world will always be messed up, there is no silver lining. It's poetic

Kirkman is such a bullshitter. I already knew his "I have stories mapped out for another 100 issues, its not going anywhere" thing was exaggerated, but he just straight up lies to his fans.

@Kurne - IDK I think he probably had ideas for more issues and thought "I'm just padding out the story needlessly here". He basically said as much in the final issue of the comic. He said that he had planned more issues but ended up deciding they were filler. It's pretty cool that he puts good story telling above drawing out a story for money IMO

I always predicted it would end with Rick hurt and bleedib out, but giving a speech to the people of Alexandria as a horde approached. Zoom in on Rick's face, then to his eye. Zoom out to an aged Carl giving the same speech to a new group but as a part of an epic story he is telling to this new group, explaining how Rick lead the group to make Alexandria their home so that they could all be there today.

That ending would have made the GOT TV show's ending look spectacular in comparison, not.

I personally like this ending. I don't know what the actual ending is yet, but I do like this one. Yes its bleak. But did anyone actually think this story would end in any other way? The world is overrun by zombies and the only forms of humanity are small groups of humans that are just trying to survive any way they can, whether that means being honorable or evil.

The best possible ending we could have gotten would have been ending it with us not knowing what is coming next, which would undoubtedly be bad. Even this ending doesn't tell us what happened to everyone. The assumption is they all got killed by zombies. But when you think about it, no matter how much time passed between Rick giving that speech and the zoom out of the abandoned town, it doesn't mean the crew didn't run away and leave after running out of ammo fighting a horde or something. Making a stand doesn't mean you HAVE to die. It just means defending what is yours. But there's no point in staying until death if you know you can't win...

So even this ending leaves some hope that some people survived and are still out there. And again, I think thats the best situation I ever expected in an ending out of this story.

@CorndogBurglar - Okay....I just read the spoilers of the final issue. I DEFINITELY like this alternate ending much better. The actual ending feels way too "happy ending-ish" for something that has never really had much hope to begin with.

@PeterCipher - Well yeah, for sure. The only reason I say another group of humans didn't do it is because they likely would have done it to take over the town and probably would have taken down the statue of Rick. But since neither of those things are the case, I assume the zombies killed them.

@PeterCipher - And yeah, humans are generally the bigger threat, but if there was a big enough herd and they tried to stand and fight it, they would have a difficult time pulling out a win.

The big storyline NO WAY OUT

That explains why he's been treading water and repeating the same story. He ran out of ideas a hundred issues ago. And then to end on seventy pages of fellating hero worship on top of it. Should have gone with your instincts, Kirkman.

@Reeds2Much - But there have been some really popular stories in the last 100 issues like the whole Neegan thing. Also, the finale issue is much more than hero worship. It's about how the trails changed the world and the people in it. Really enjoyed it.

that's actually a great ending , the point of the walkers walking slow is the feeling of inevitability

I think that would have been a fitting and poetic end to the series. Done right, it would be truly haunting. Maybe the movie trilogy can try that ending.
