The Long, Drawn-Out, Polarizing Search For The Walking Dead's Sophia In Under 2 Minutes

Many fans were put off by the shift in The Walking Dead's tempo as the group came to a stand still at Hershel's farm while looking for little Sophia. Here's that 7 episode storyline told in 2 minutes.

It's nothing new when TV shows drags out a plotline in order to create a satisfying payoff for fans when that storyline is finally wrapped up. However, fans of Season 1 of The Walking Dead were accustomed to the blistering pace of the first season, which saw numerous locations and Rick's group depicted as a post-apocalyptic Oregon Trail, zombie killing caravan. The folks over at Vulture apparently share the pain and annoyance of the show's fans as they edited the first 7 episodes of Season 2 to show that this particular plotline could be shown in a single episode, and in under 2 minutes.

By now, I'll assume all of you saw the finale and are aware of Sophia's fate. However, this raises more questions as it's rather hard to swallow the fact that Hershel didn't know that the little zombie girl in his barn could potentially be the little girl Rick's camp was looking for. And if, as some have speculated, Sophia simply went into the barn seeking shelter after separating from Rick and was unaware of the zombie inhabitants, someone would've noticed here while they were doing the bizarre farm chore of feeding the zombies livestock. Hopefully this question is cleared up in February when The Walking Dead returns and hopefully it doesn't take the rest of Season 2 to do it.

The Walking Dead is an American post-apocalyptic horror television series developed for television by Frank Darabont and based on the ongoing comic book series, The Walking Dead, by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. The pilot received 5.3 million viewers, making it the most-watched premiere episode of any AMC television series The first season finale received 6 million viewers, a series high; with 4 million viewers in the 18–49 demographic, making it the most watched basic cable series for the demographic.

The premiere had 579,000 viewers, almost double for any other show on FX that week. The viewership dipped during the season then rose to 522,000 viewers for the final episode. My own speculation is that it wasn't Sophia, Merle caught her and put her t-shirt on a Walker to fool Rick's group and he'll be back for real in the second half of Season 2.

@Dionysios True, but they were feeding the zombies so I find it hard to believe no one noticed.

I have to say, I really did not see that one coming. I figured they would find her. Even when I heard the growling from the open door I thought it was Herschel's wife and figured he would freak out when they shot her.

@Dionysios Lol, I don't think they could include any footage from the episode that just aired. But it's everything that happened right up before the mid-season finale.

..season 2 = drawn out story, OVER THE TOP acting (Bernthal's in particular..atrocious!!), over dramatic characters and plot. It just....wasn't good. You can tell what Darabont brought to it in the first season. I hope they do better with the rest of season 2. I don't wanna see another "Heroes".

It’s for emotional resonance that’s why is was drawn out. I literally have no problem with this. I mean if anyone can come up with something better, why the hell are you not making a show or a movie or even a fan movie?

For those of you who think "it wasn't Sophia" it was the same actress in the zombie makeup. So Merle just found a clone/twin and put the shirt on another girl who looks identical but isn't her?!?!? Reaching...ftw, sorry. This isn't Young and the Restless, I doubt we'll be finding many "unknown twins" running around.

I was sad that Sophia got "zombied", and have really enjoyed season 2.

i don't think it was over drawn at all. it was a good tie to get the first half of the season done. in the comics they do 'runs' to tie in little stories. sophia was a great tie for the events that happened. now that she is dead, enter the next 'run'.

I agree, the girl looked like she was gnawed on and left to rot in the swamp for a couple weeks...couldn't possibly be a zombie sophia...

Season 2 sucked dick and it will only get worse without Frank Darabont. I'll stick to the books from now on

Seriously, people think it was not sophia the zombie chick?
The zombie size checks with sophia size, the hair checks, shirt checks, face reminds her.
I am pissed off too that they decided to kill a character from the comics that is still alive in that, but hell it was her and point lol.

@Graphic City Your a dumb ass, it's clearly Sophia. Are people seriously considering that it wasn't her?
Robert Kirkman also explained on the talk show 'Talking Dead' on how no one knew she was in the barn.
Paraphrased from Kirkman, Otis must have found her and put her in the barn but before he could tell anyone about finding a girl zombie he goes with Shane to find the medical supplies, then dies while on the journey therefore no one knows she is in there.

I don't think this season so far is bad in the least! I think what people are calling "drawn out" is actually a point of the plot. I don't want to see wave after wave of attacking zombies each week. I want to see the details of the relationships, learn more about these characters, and see how they grow or not through unprecedented circumstances. Good stuff!!!

I seem to be one of the few on this site who likes Glenn (Walker Bait), Herschel and Dale. T-Dog may as well be killed off considering the lack of screen time he gets. My hope for season 2 part 2 will be that they kill off Shane (in the most horrible, bloody, painful way possible) with Andrea a close second and finally Lori. Bring in a new cast so I won't have to passionately hate so many of them.

I really enjoy most of the content on this website but is it really too much to ask that the contributors use thumbnails that don't spoil major plot points, this episode doesn't show until Friday in the UK. A picture of a live Sophia would have worked just as well as a zombified Sophia without spoiling the episode's ending.

why did they turned sophia into a walker?

I do think it was her,

\BUT

Zombie Sophia has RED hair, and Normal Sophia has Blonde hair.

Just wanted to point that out.

Hello, the zombies in the barn were a big secret, of course Hershel wasn't going to say, oh that litle girl your looking for is in my barn with a bunch of other "sick folk". plus, if she had just wandered in there as a human, she wouldn't have been zombiefied, she'd have been EATEN. She prolly died of exposure and came back to life and got round up, or narrowly escaped from a walker attack and got turned, and then got rounded up.

I actually liked this season though, the drawn-out search was a complete waste of time for the survivors, just like Shane was saying.

It is her, they showed her putting the make up on in backstage scenes, there's no doubt here. And thinking that merle was planning all this is just silly.

BlueHawaiiSurfer
BlueHawaiiSurfer - 11/29/2011, 5:52 PM
Like I said before it was the same actress so it's a considerable stretch to say it "wasn't Sophia". admiralhowdy I agree she would have been eaten if she just fell into the barn but she does have bite/scratch marks on her left shoulder/neck. I don't think it was exposure, she probably has a close encounter but managed to escape, only later to succumb to the illness.

The reason it doesn't look like her is because when zombie make up is put on we can't actually make a person's face look thinner and more anemic with adding more structures to her face, the cheek bones and the bones around the eye and brow are actually pushed out more to make the face look more sunk in and thinner. It works better with people we didn't see before they where zombies because we dont have a point of reference from before they where zombiefied. I didn't even know it was her either before they started to yell her name, but I dont think they are trying to do some goofy old switcharo. Especially seeing as it was the actress that played sofia in the make up, i checked because i thought maybe it was a different actress.
