THE WALKING DEAD Creator Explains Why David Morrissey Is The Governor

Robert Kirkman tells MTV News what is about David Morrissey that made him perfect for the role of The Governor. Kirkman also says that the medium of television will not be an excuse to tone down The Governor.

"I think he's really going to knock it out of the park. He has tremendous scale and scope to his acting abilities. I think people are going to be shocked and amazed by the things we do with the Governor in season three. I think people are going to quickly realize that David Morrissey is an awesome guy for the role."

The Governor, or also known as Philip Blake is the main antagonist to Rick Grimes and his followers. If he is anything like his comic book version than viewers are in for a treat.

Creator Robert Kirkman took some time to give MTV News an interview. He addressed the recent news of British actor, David Morrissey winning the coveted role of the insane and tyrannical Governor.

"More than any other actor, David Morrissey came in and wanted to embrace everything that there is to the Governor. He knew this is a complicated character, and he knew this was a character that people are going to hate to love."

Often times you'll hear that actors want to show a villain's soft side. Just look at all the live-action Spider-Man movies, every villain is a hooker with a heart of gold. In some ways it's nice because you end up sympathizing with the character, but audiences also love a villain who isn't afraid to just be... well, a villain. Which is something Kirkman points out about Morrissey.

"He recognized that this character is a villain. A lot of people came in and were like, 'But he's a good guy inside, right?' They want that nuance, and that's definitely important. We definitely have that. The Governor isn't a one-note character; there are a lot of layers to that onion. But this is a sadistic guy. David Morrissey, more than any other actor, really wanted to sink his teeth into that role. He wants to embrace everything there is about the Governor."

Kirkman was also quick to point out that the television version of The Governor will not be "neutered" as to the version in the comic book. He insists that we will see plenty of "craziness."

And without giving away too many details I'll say this, The Governor is one sick bastard. He is less than human, and even more of a monster than the zombies. He is quick to kill, mame, and rape anything that stands in his way. If you thought the tension was think now, just wait for all the cringe worthy scenes that Morrissey will have the pleasure of presenting to us.

Let me add that I think we'll see fan favorite Michonne very soon, since her character and The Governor have the most interesting encounters in the comics. Could we see her right at the end of season two like rumors suggest? Perhaps, but either she should be put into the storyline before Rick Grimes ever meets The Governor.

@kevberg

To you the governor story may have been cliche. But to me it was one of the craziest arcs n the book. The Governor is responsible for a lot change in certain characters. One of the best Arcs in the comic. You must be crazy.

It’s just a hunch but I have a feeling that Merle is going to be a member of the Governor’s crew next season.

Don't care if they cut the hand off. Hard to do on TV. Care if they kill certain family members. That should totally happen. DO IT.

This makes me want to finish reading the TWD novel.

SPOILERS!!!

Okay, so in the next episode of 'Walking Dead' Dale dies. Daryl mercy kills him when a walker tears into him. Shane also dies this season, he becomes a walker...spoiler images on DarkUFO's spoiler site confirm this...

As for how season 3 will pan out. The Governor will still be as crazy as he was in the graphic novel.

1) Pits humans against Walkers...

2) Chops off Rick's shooting hand...

3) Rapes Michone...

4) Kills Hershal...

5) Kills Lorie and her newborn daughter...

He's such a great character, hopefully they can do him justice...
