THE WALKING DEAD Ex-Showrunner Wanted Daryl To Be "Prison Gay"

In a recent GQ interview, The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus said former showrunner Frank Darabont ("Shawshank Redemption") wanted to make Daryl Dixon "prison gay."

In August, The Walking Dead comic book creator Robert Kirkman said that there have been discussion about making 'Daryl Dixon' (Norman Reedus) gay in the popular AMC television series. Then the current showrunner Scott M. Gimple said Daryl's sexuality will not be dealt with in the upcoming season. That reveal will happen when the character gets close to someone(s) and feels as though he can let down his guard. According to Norman Reedus former showrunner Frank Darabont planned Daryl to be gay after season one.

GQ: I do like the extremity of him perhaps being a virgin.
NORMAN REEDUS: Yeah, totally. You know, a virgin is interesting. I remember Frank Darabont, after the first season we were at a party in LA, He said, 'I've got an idea for Daryl. He's gay. Would you be interested in that?' I was like, 'Let me hear you out.' He said, 'Well, he's prison gay—like, you'll catch him looking at a member of the same sex, but if you mention it to him, he'll just stab you and be like what the [frick]?—he will never admit it.' I was like, 'That'll blow minds—let's do that.' And he said, 'I knew I hired you for a reason.' "

GQ: And then they fired him.
NORMAN REEDUS: Had nothing to do with that. But I like playing all these different things. Daryl's not the type of guy who's gonna throw somebody up against a tree in the moonlight. I don't see him as having that kind of confidence. You could drop him off in the middle of the woods with a stick and he'll come back well fed and doing well, but I don't think in matters of the heart he's real secure.

In the fourth season, we see Rick and the group of survivors fostering a thriving community in the safe haven of the prison only to have it short-lived as the group loses everything, their home, family, and friends to the threat of the walkers, outside threats and the hidden dangers brewing inside the fences. The group of survivors are broken apart and sent on divergent paths, unsure of everyone else's fate as they are exposed to new dangers, new enemies, and heartbreaking choices. They will have their faith thoroughly tested - a faith that breaks some of them and redeems others.

The Walking Dead stars: Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Scott Wilson, Emily Kinney, Sarah Wayne Callies, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Iron E. Singleton, Madison Lintz, Danai Gurira, Melissa Suzanne McBride, Michael Rooker, Lauren Cohan, Vincent M. Ward, Chad L. Coleman, Brighton Sharbino, Kyla Kenedy and David Morrissey.

"Prison Gay"? What he's describing sounds more like simply being in the closet.

Well if it was Darabont's idea and writing I would have been up for that.

"Make Carl a homosexual but leave Daryl alone. Nobody likes Carl anyways"

And making Daryl gay would make him unlikable? Also, I've known at least two gays who were not effeminate and had low voices. Guess you need to visit more gay bars.

Believe it or not AlexanderLykins, not all of them are like that. I remember being taken aback by comedian Todd Glass coming out (he was like everyone's Uncle that hit on college girls). Our grandparents lost their shit when Rock Hudson was revealed not to like tuna.

Let the record show....that nail, uh, had not yet finished editing his article to highlight the fact that that statement was from GQ....and that I did not post a Freudian slip concerning my actual feelings towards nail.

Honestly, I feel like Reedus himself would know a little more about his own character than anyone else...and he thought it'd add an interesting layer of complexity to Daryl and was fully on board with that idea. Obviously things could have changed in the time since Darabont left, but I certainly don't mind the fact that Daryl could be a kind of closeted homosexual. It would definitely explain why he's never exactly gone any further with female characters that he's had a TON of chemistry with, like Carol or Beth.

Arrowhead...I'll put my boot up your ass prison style!

@GuardianAngel

Sometimes when a man and a woman love each other very much...they have anal sex because that's what the woman wants. And sometimes the man finds out later from his friend Steve that the woman had a penis.

Haha it doesn't seem like the folks behind Bad Lip Reading come out with videos very often, but when they do they always knock it out of the park. Absolutely hilarious!

I would love if they make him gay. Won't change how badass he is to me, but it will be the best thing to happen to comments sections of sites like this since Iron Man 3.

Darabont make great movies (and of my top 5 of all time "Shawshank Redemption" based on the novel of Stephen King), but thank God he leaves the show.

@AlexanderLykins

How do you not "agree" with someone's sexual orientation?? That's like not agreeing that someone is white.

Also, love your argument that he shouldn't be gay because he doesn't fit into whatever specific type of stereotype you've decided all gay people need to fit into.
