THE WALKING DEAD Showrunner Scott M. Gimple Addresses Daryl Dixon's Sexuality

Robert Kirkman recently revealed that the possibility of Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus) being gay in the hit AMC series has been "discussed". Now, The Walking Dead showrunner Scott M. Gimple sheds some light on that and confirms that a gay character is coming to the series...

The reveal from Robert Kirkman that Daryl Dixon might in fact be gay was met by the response we've all come to expect from some fans, but equally as many pointed out that it could be an interesting direction to take the character in. Talking to TV Line recently, showrunner Scott M. Gimple said that while Daryl's sexuality won't be addressed this year, they're pleased that such speculation and interest exists. "We know all sorts of things about the characters that we haven’t revealed. [But] we’re not holding back information on Daryl’s sexuality as any sort of big reveal. The fact that there’s still a question as to what Daryl’s orientation is in Season 5 absolutely speaks to Daryl’s character; he is a very guarded, very closed-off individual in a lot of ways. We have been able to see him ever so slowly open up and show the other characters aspect by aspect as to what makes him tick. That’s been a very satisfying journey for all of us on the creative side to portray. [And] he’s still on that journey." He adds, "This is a character who is going to continue to grow closer to the other characters and let his guard down, and let them see just who he is, in every way." However, despite the fact that The Walking Dead won't be addressing this particular plot point in season five, there are plans in place to introduce a male gay character, but he wouldn't reveal when exactly that will be. If they're following the comic books, this will likely be Aaron or even enigmatic new character "Jesus". What do you guys think of these comments? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

The gay character is either Aaron or Paul "Jesus" Monroe.

Also first.

What does it even matter?

None of the Darryl fans watch to see who he will "end up with". We just want to see Darryl kick all kinds of Walker ass!

Is the gay guy the one that started the zombie apocalypse?
If not, then who cares if he or any other character is gay, not a big deal in any realm unless it adds to the show...

I feel like if they make him gay it just to make him gay. There is nothing from any of the episodes I've seen that said he was gay. I have only seen the opposite. You can tell Daryl likes Carol and Beth. So why change that now.

I know we live in a time where it is more acceptable for this sort of development, but its seem they would be doing it just for the sake of have something different for a beloved character, hes a hard man that everyone routes for because hes a bad ass, and to make him gay after 5 years would just be weird

I don't watch TWD anymore (kinda bored me. The suspense never payed off. Breaking Bad, for example, did, all 62 episodes went above and beyond. all of them.) However, them turning Daryl gay wouldn't do anything huge for the character. Liking penises instead of vaginias do nothing to a character. Maybe a little, like how the character is treated, but mostly the character can be the same without any major changes. He'll still be Daryl, nothing really changed. SO please, no bitching.

Didnt carol say in one season"wanna go full around in the tank" or the tower or somthing like that and they walk off holding each other waists? That does seem to gay to me.

Why is it that whenever there's talk of making a character gay everyone's knee jerk reaction is to say "Oh well, they're just making him gay to make him gay - no point." So does that mean that every gay character ever is just a gimmick? [frick] you guys. I hope Daryl does come out as gay, it'd be a really interesting aspect of his character to delve into. Especially considering his brother's, and by extension (most likely) his family's attitude towards race it wouldn't be a surprise if he grew up in a homophobic environment. What an interesting scenario Daryl would find himself in that he feels more free to open up at the end of the world? GO FOR IT AMC!!

Makes sense and would add to more of why he got beat by his dad. They did show a bunch of scars on him. And he has turned down a lot of girls in the show.

If he's gay that makes him even more interesting. If not, he's still awesome. Either way we're all going to be along for the ride. I just don't want him to die.

Sigh. I'm sure this won't happen. They just want to drum up attention for the new season, but I wouldn't put it past them. It's cool to do these sort of things just to do them for the shock factor these days. Every character is becoming either gay or race swapped or gender swapped because it draws extra attention.

If youve read the comics there is a gay scouting couple who leads a few survivors to the first community they find after the prison.

I wouldn't bang Carol either with Beth standing right over there! Ey oh!

@Ryden It's not the fact that ANY gay character is a gimmick. Introduce a gay character and that is fine. It is when characters just magically turn gay that it comes off like something cheap. Willow from Buffy for example.

Kirkman recently said that Paul "Jesus" Monroe was coming to The Walking Dead so I'm sure that is the character that Scott is referring to. It also fits for his character to be introduced this season since they are close to getting to that portion of the comics.

And regarding Daryl's sexuality, it doesn't matter to me. It actually does make sense that he is gay because I don't see Carol's advances to him -in particular in 3x01 when they were guarding at the prison -being recipocated by Daryl. I actually saw it as her teasing him because she already knows he isn't going to make advances towards her. Anyone who says there is mutual romantic feelings is reading way too much that relationship. If Daryl is gay -he will continue to be a kickass character. His sexuality is the least important part of his persona.
