THE WALKING DEAD Writers Don't Know How The Zombie Apocalypse Happened Either

Show runner Glen Mazzara recently sat down and talked about AMC's hugely popular zombie show The Walking Dead, where he says the writers of the show are in the dark in regards to how the out break started as well.

News broke earlier today that AMC's hit show, The Walking Dead, will be running 16 episodes for its third season. Show runner Glen Mazzara sat down with The Wrap to talk about the show and its success. He also said that like the audience the writers are in the dark as to how the Zombie out break started. "Internally, we don't know where the zombie outbreak started, how to cure it, anything like that. We haven't really discussed it. We're more interested in the continuing storylines. That's something that's not really addressed in the book, and that's something that we'd like to keep." But don't expect them to go into that any time soon because the show is more about the characters and staying alive rather than how the out break happened. "This show is about our characters. And about them trying to stay alive, hold on to their humanity, find a safe place, hopefully rebuild civilization. Just everything's collapsed. So they're under incredible duress. It doesn't feel right that they would have those answers, and even if they did have those answers, what would they do with them?"

Mazzara also went on to talk about why he thinks the show has been so successful after the first season and a half. "I think part of the success of the show is that it feels immediate. It feels like we're following the little guys. And they don't have the answers and they desperately need them to survive." The show will return on February 12 with the episode titled Nebraska.

I never read the book so I don't know either. Does it ever say in the books?

I love this show tho but I think there hasn't been enough zombies lately which needs to improve or the show will fail. Zombies is the selling point here.

Agreed on the lack of zombies lately. And why the held is there a mid season hiatus?? I've never seen any other shows do that. Anyone know why? It sucks!!

Almost every show on tv goes on hiatus, for the longer dramas sometimes multiple hiatus'. Last season Bones had three. Tv shows do this because filming is extensive and actors need breaks. Shows on HBO get away with no hiatus because there are only ten episodes. Thats 14-18 weeks of filming tops. Thats a long time to be on set every day. Movies have an easier time because they film straight through, but rarely is an actor called every day of every week. Hiatus' are also used before episodes that require extensive editing, Terra Nova did this before dinosaur heavy episodes.

The mid season hiatus happens a lot. Smallville did it, Supernatural, Fringe and House do it all the time also.

They never said in the books, just that everyone is a carrier of the disease and the bite doesn't turn you, you only turn when you die... But I guarantee these hacks think up some shitty genesis for the epidemic

I don't care how it started, all I care about is getting everybody off that boring farm. Season two has been such a disappointment so far, and the only thing that saved it was the last 4 minutes of the final episode. But still, that was a long, long build up for a climax that should have happened 4 episodes prior. Here's hoping for a much improved close to season two!

Lost was the first show that I remember doing the mid season hiatus.

There's a hiatus also bc they only have 13 episodes and are trying to stretch it into more of a full broadcast season.

Its a tough situation. Not enough zombies and people will say its boring, too many zombies and it too gets boring bc it becomes too predictable- such as the "villain of the week". Plus it will feel like every other zombie thing out there. So a good mix and unpredictability would be best

Because ignorance is bliss? Well really it isn't!

This show is a prime example of following a comic too closely. These guys leave a city full of weapons, protective clothing and lord knows how many better vehicles with what? A chopper, a sports car and a small caravan! They know they're gonna be fighting zombies all their lives and they don't even steal a few leather jackets or even Biker-wear to protect themselves in ruckuss!

The show is too much like the comic which is a fun read but ultimately contrived to make a bad situation even worse through a lack of common sense!

Ceejay I think you examine or analyze stuff too much. Suspension of belief. You aren'y really that angry are you? I catch myself doing the same thing sometimes but then I realize it's just a movie or show or comic. You do make valid points though I'll give you that.

@krooklyndodger,

There is merit in leaving it to the imagination. Look what happened with Lucas when he spoilt the mythos of 'The Force' with all that logical explanatory bullshit that was 'midichlorians'.
