The Walking Dead's Jon Bernthal says Rick & Shane's Relationship to Become "Very Explosive"

The first half of The Walking Dead just wrapped up on AMC and we have several months to mull over the occurrences that we witnessed in the mid-season finale. One of the most intriguing things we saw was Shane's emotional eruption; one that had been building for some time. I think most would agree that Bernthal is among the breakout stars in the series and his character will lead to some very interesting story line twists and such. Bernthal recently talked with The Wrap about his character and the direction his relationship with Rick, played by Andrew Lincoln, could take. Here is a snippet from the interview, which you definitely want to check out, so hit the link below for more from Jon Bernthal!

TheWrap:Are you getting a lot of feedback from fans, and how strongly they're reacting to Shane and his actions in season two?
Jon Bernthal: You know, I am. I mean, it's always kind of garnered strong reaction, both good and bad, from the beginning. Before we even started, you know, I remember going to New York, last year, before the show had even aired, and when I was announced at Comic Con … everybody sort of announced their name and what character they were playing, and I said I was playing Shane, and I just got this chorus of resounding boos from the audience. (Laughing)

In the comic book, he's sort of this … I think he could be perceived as this kind of one-note, sort of villainous kind of character.  But I always thought, even in a comic book, there's so much more to him. I think he's just a character that kind of got caught up in a situation that was so much bigger than him.

TW:So where did you land on the issue of Shane killing Otis? Is he a hero or a villain?
JB: I think it's really important when you're playing a character to love him and believe in him, and to never act out of … I don't think people act out of evilness. I think that Shane is a guy who is really trying to adapt to this new world order where things like shame and emotion and a moral compass, where they, I think he looks at those as things that will hold you back in this world.

You have to make hard decisions and you have to sort of build this wall around your emotions.

What's so interesting about the character is that that's an impossible thing to do, and he's an unbelievably emotional guy. He's a hard feeling guy, and it's impossible to build a wall around your heart, and I think that he's really trying hard to show how he's different than Rick … (that) he's the guy who's willing to make hard decisions, and he is a survivor.

TW: In season one, it seemed clear Shane's purpose was to protect Lori and Carl.
JB: But then Rick came back, and in season two, he has definitely taken the leadership role, yet Shane doesn't seem to believe Rick can hack it in this new world. So is his purpose, in his mind, still to protect Lori and Carl?

Yeah.  I think that's it.  I mean, I think it's very important to remember that in the beginning, this decision to take Lori and Carl and try to get them to Atlanta and try to get them to safety, to just do whatever it takes to keep them alive, that came out of a love for his best friend Rick, and I think that's what makes it so interesting.

Somewhere inside of Shane, he really feels like all of this was an unbelievably unselfish, altruistic move for his friend, the exact guy who now he feels like he's getting in the way of. And that's where you start to get feelings of betrayal and feelings of, all the guilt and shame that he feels for sleeping with his best friend's wife. But I think (Shane) feels like the kernel of all this was him just trying to be a good friend.

Shane's a very driven guy and once he sort of made the decision that his life now is all about keeping (Lori and Carl) alive, then he fell in love with these two people. He loves being a father figure for Carl.  He loves being Lori's man.  You know, once he adopted that, anyone who gets in the way of that is getting in the way of his mission and violating his code of why he's now alive.

TW: So where can he and Rick go from here? They're kind of dancing around each other right now, but that has to boil over eventually, right?
JB: What's so interesting about the second half of the season is that Rick is going to prove that he's very much capable of keeping these people alive. What that does to Shane is really, really interesting. You want somebody to be a certain way, and then they prove that they actually are that way, and what happens then can be very explosive.

Be sure to check out the rest of the interview, where you can get more great information about the remaining episodes of Season 2 of The Walking Dead, which returns to AMC on February 12th.

I think Shane is a survivor but lacks a moral code of ethic that Rick emulates to keep everyone alive in a zombiefied world. He's the kind of guy I want on my side in a fight but never let him stand behind me because when the going gets tough because he's just going to shoot me in the kneecaps. When it comes down to it he's just a coward who will push your head underneath the water just to keep him afloat. Bro's before ho's. Bro's before ho's.

i have a love/hate thing for shane. I havent read the comics yet but have been wanting to since before the show even started, just never got around them cause well theres a lot of other comics i read lol. anyways i can defintely see him doing some of the stuff he has done. definitely killing those walkers in the barn i would have done the same thing. maybe wouldnt have gone crazy like he did but yeah. and when he shot otis, that was messed up but think about it this way, either they both had died and then carl would have as well possibly. but since he shot otis he was able to get away and save carl as well because of the medicine they needed. plus it was otis's bad that carl got shot even though it was just an accident. i mean in the beginning of the series he tried to save his best, rick being in the hospital and didn't know for sure if he would have survived but he did lock him in there to protect him better so that way the walkers wouldn't have gotten to him. he also beat the hell out of that redneck wife beater who probably also molested his daughter, i would have beaten the crap out of that guy as well. but the whole thing sleeping with his supposedly best friends wife was some BS and now being obsessed with her. and hes just becoming more unstable. he would be someone i'd want when the times got tougher to do what needed to be done but i'd keep a close eye on him thats for sure.

It would be a mistake to kill Shane. He's the Ben (LOST) Linus of the show. At worst I think he will leave the group after either being forced out or imposing self-exile. There are simply too many good opportunities to display the conflicting facets of his personality -- adding him to the body count would be a story killer.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/3/2011, 5:57 AM
Shane is the best kind of bad guy because although his actions are reprehensible, everything he does IS for the best of the group. But then we can see that he is also very selfish. His mental state is slipping and although He cares for Lori and Carl, beyond that? I don't think he would have too much trouble leaving any of teh others, even Rick, to dies if it meant he would live.

I think most of you misunderstand. I think Shane is the type of guy that would drown to keep you afloat. He didn't want to kill Otis. He even asked Otis to leave him behind and take his bags to save Carl. Shane was going to sacrifice himself so Carl and Otis would live. When Otis refused Shane said to himself, Otis has to die or all 3 of us will die. I think that guilt of having to kill Otis and the guilt of Rick being alive has driven him off the deep end. He can't come to terms with the guy he is trying to become.

It's obvious Rick has known his wife was pregnant for awhile. The scientist at that center took everyone's blood.

that HAS to be what he whispered to Rick at the season finally of Season 1.

so this has been a long time coming.

shane is great for this show and as a character to the people he is with. He is an asshole for the right reasons and to say he shud die by the end of the season shows your lack of appreciation for things that are essentilal to them all surving and that you have no knowledge of a well executed character.
Talontd
Talontd - 12/3/2011, 9:21 AM
I think UltimateCapt has the best understanding of it. SHANE is willing to die for the group, but if YOU need to die for the group to survive....he has no problem pulling the trigger. I dont think he's as selfish as some of you seem to think...

MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/3/2011, 10:23 AM
I don't agree with that. He isn't the best actor on the show and he can be a little "ripe" but he is playing a mentally unstable man..you guys do get that right? Shane isn't playing with a full deck anymore. I think some of you are forgetting that aside from killing Otis..which is a decision that DID save Carl's life even if it was a horrible thing to do..he also attempted to rape Lori last season. Funny how that gets shoved under the rug when people are talking about the type of man he is. Make no mistake, just because he may have a better grasp on the situation that they are in and better survival skills than the others, he is a scummy dude.

Bernthal does some of the best acting in this show. all the actors are incredible, way better than half of the shit acting you see in hollywood now a days. also i hope rick grows his beard and his hair out and gets his hand chopped off. he needs to start getting more bad ass!

Shane's character is spectacular. I hate the man so much which is exactly why he is great. For a character to provoke such a reaction... that is what it's all about. I maintain a very strict Deontological moral view point, so that means I don't think it was right of him to kill Otis no matter what the circumstance. That action alone means he deserves death himself. Great survival skills or not, there is no way in hell I would have a man like that in my group, I'd kill him immediately even though doing so would be wrong. I have always considered 2 major rules for survival in an apocalypse of any sort, #1 I will not allow someone to sacrifice another member of the group for any reason, and #2 kill all cannibals on sight. The killing of Otis sparked a hot debate within my house hold whereby one person said he would kill anyone to save himself (he even said he'd kill his mother if he had to) to which I replied "Now that I know where you stand, if an apocalypse of any sort ever does happen, the first thing I'll do is put a bullet in your head to ensure you never get the chance to sacrifice another person." He got pissed, then I called him a coward lol, almost came to blows, lucky for him it didn't. Anyone who would kill a friend or family member to save themselves is a coward pure and simple. That's how awesome this show is that it can provoke such strong reactions.

[frick] all you Bernthal haters, he is outstanding.
