DOCTOR WHO Alum Matt Smith Doesn't Understand Why The Series Faces Backlash From Some Fans

Matt Smith was a relative unknown when he joined Doctor Who as the Eleventh Doctor but his popularity soon skyrocketed and he remains the best version of the Time Lord in the eyes of many fans.

The British actor followed in the footsteps of David Tennant and was later replaced by Peter Capaldi; when The Suicide Squad star walked away from the TARDIS, Jodie Whittaker was next and it was then we started seeing a divide form in the show's fanbase.

Some fans were deeply unhappy with a woman playing the Doctor and Ncuti Gatwa has, unfortunately, faced a similar level of backlash because he's Black and a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

In an interview with The Times (via SFFGazette.com), Smith reflected on his stint in the long-running sci-fi series and questioned why anyone would take issue with Doctor Who, a show he says is simply "about an alien who is cool and travels around the universe."

"It was overnight," the Morbius star said of Doctor Who's impact on his career. "Nobody knew who I was and suddenly I was f***ing Doctor Who!"

Asked whether he still watches it, Smith said, "Not much, but Ncuti’s brilliant. I feel very proud to have been in the show. It changed my life because few shows are watched by a nine-year-old, mum and dad and 83-year-old grandma. That’s three generations, and you’re in people’s homes at Christmas. It’s an amazing responsibility."

"Those debates reduce it to a place that it doesn’t need to be in," he continued referring to the recent backlash. "People that attack Doctor Who blow my mind. It’s about an alien who is cool and travels around the universe saving civilisations - what’s not to love?"

In the same interview, Smith shared his belief that flagging potentially upsetting content runs the risk of dumbing down storytelling. "Too much policing of stories and being afraid to bring them out because a climate is a certain way is a shame. I'm not sure I'm on board with trigger warnings."

He added, "It's OK to feel uncomfortable or provoked while looking at a painting or watching a play, but I worry everything's being dialed and dumbed down. We're telling audiences they're going to be scared before they've watched something."

This ties into Doctor Who as it was back in February when the actor explained, "I always thought that was one of the great things of doing Doctor Who. That you scared children, in a controlled way, but you did scare them. Imagine you go to kids watching Doctor Who, 'By the way, this might scare you.' No, I'm not into it."

Smith isn't expected to return to Doctor Who but we have plenty to look forward to from his role as Prince Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon as the best is yet to come with that character.

Honestly Matt , some people are unfortunately miserable hence we get backlashes because they think they know best and that their opinion is fact.

Also Josh while the backlash has increased in recent years (due to the political global climate) divisive opinions on the show itself atleast in the modern era have been around since even Smiths run imo , especially Series 6.

Anyway , it’s always nice to hear from Matt since his 11th Doctor remains my personal favorite (though he was also my first aswell).

He immediately cemented himself in the role!!.

"the Morbius star", is that where he's from? I thought he looked a little familiar.

Statistically speaking approximately half of the adult population are intellectually below average...this is how you get these kinds of backlash responses to films.

@Forthas - 1st thing is that this is a series not a film. 2nd is the show used to be written a lot smarter for it's entire run which is why a ton of people, including me, left after Smith's run when they stated to dumb down their stories. Capaldi, who was next up after Smith, was a great actor but the writing he had was imbecilic.

You have to ACCURATELY gauge just how 'woke' your audience is, or this is a likely outcome.

@r1g0r - That is making an assumption that most the backlash was coming from any who were ever part of the audience, ever REALY watched the show before or not which although may be the case with some from what I have seen heavily suspect most had never watched a single episode before in their life and were faking being lifelong fans whilst jumping on the hate train.

This IS the series that first had a discussion of pronouns of an alien back in the 70's, had a super camp third Doctor after what many thought there were subtle nods to the second having a same sex relationship with a male companion, had a lesbian love interest for a companion in the 80's and unofficialy had the first female Doctor in the 90's before we even get into Captain Jack in season one of the relaunch onwards...

...now, if we want to get into quality of writing, fair points to be had with all of that, but it was officialy canon the Doctor could regenerate to look like anyone, any race, male or females back in the 80's and has always delved into topical subject matters of the era the episodes were set in and always been progressive the woke debate is akin to ones for Star Trek TBH (as in it always was).

For the record I feel Ncuti's Doctor and the writing of his episodes has (on average) been the best since the Matt Smith incarnation (opinions will vary obviously). That isn't to say there wasn't issues but Doctor Who episodes are rarely perfect, was always part of it's charm with the original run in the 60's through 80's that they were cheesy as heck and oft flawed but somehow the cast still made it work even when the stories were weak.

I don't understand people who complain about Doctor Who or Star Trek being "woke". Is akin to complaining that water is wet - it's inherently so.

thedrudo - 9/3/2024, 11:42 AM
@PutinsGooch - Probably because no one can write with any subtlety anymore. You used to be able to watch shows and if you were inclined -- find layers and meaning within the entertainment of it all.

The old Twilight Zone episodes did it perfect where you could be entertained by it, but also find metaphors within the story. It worked both ways. That's apparently impossible now and every agenda or belief is so obvious in these shows that it's obnoxious.

@thedrudo -

it's also what you can expect when movies and TV shows are created by committee.

This is why producers need to stay OUT of the process.

@thedrudo - When were they subtle with the original Star Trek series again?

The choices they went with for bridge crew was anything but subtle in pushing diversity, so much so they scrapped the first pilot initialy, in part as a female first officer was considered one step too far.

There are fair debates on quality of writing at various points but when you have a show that does a race war due to which side of the face was black or white it wasn't exactly hard to spot what they were getting at. Dialogue was for both Dr Who and Trek generaly better when they returned with Eccleston and Stewart I tend to feel, felt less cheesy/clunky at least and tried to stick more closely to real science amongst the made up technobabble.

I would say trying to hide it at all was more about what would likely be censored than anything else in the 60's. In regards to Dr Who for instance there was never any intimacy ever shown in kids TV at the time, wasn't even in shows aimed at adults in the first two decades it was on.

New Who took those gloves off from the get go in season one with Captain Jack and finaly being more open about the Doctor flirting (with a tree Woman in season one ffor instance prior to Tennants falling in love with Rose) but even then the most you get is a very occassional kiss (and from season one included the Doctor doing so with males).

TLDR Once upon a time writers would have been forced to mask things when tackling hot topics, unsure that is a good thing or instantly makes them better writers, as early Dr Who and Star Trek stories if anything were a lot less complex.

They had a diverse cast but didn't endlessly talk about how diverse the characters were. Other than the episode with Abraham Lincoln, I don't think it came up. It was also shown in a very different time.

I'd also say people hating each other because of the side of the face that was black or white was far more subtle than much of what we get today

And lots of people, hated, and continue to hate the romance between The Doctor and Rose

People complaining about Star Trek or DW turning woke are just waking up to the fact that they've woken up on the wrong side of history and attempt to force their favorite media on their side.

Is the character of the DR gay or just the actor? Because if he's an alien why would an alien be gay? Wouldn't an alien have no sexual identity? Also why would an alien care about saving civilization? I've never seen an episode of this show...it just doesn't make sense.

@LysergicMeinbal - You mean….like Superman?
LysergicMeinbal
LysergicMeinbal - 9/3/2024, 8:54 PM
@CerealKiller1 - Yea I never understood that either. If you're an alien why care about a species that is determined to kill itself. What's the point of having a relationship with a species you will outlive. It's trying to humanize a superior being and bringing it down to a pathetic level.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 9/4/2024, 7:22 AM
@LysergicMeinbal - For majority of Doctor Who's run he was not sexual at all. He was basically the old wise man coming to help. Then when it came back in the 2000s after it was on hiatus for years they made him want to hook up with a young blonde hot chick. So he's like thousands of years old and hooking up with a kid. Needless to say I'm one of those that hated that change to his character.

Yes, new actor and his Doctor character are gay. I haven't watched any of it but apparently he's flamboyantly gay and hyper sexualized now. Basically, the character can now be boiled down to "Yay, he's gay!!".

He likes humanity and wants to help anyone in need throughout the universe. He's basically the cowboy that comes in and saves the day and then rides into the sunset. Or at least that's what he used to be. I have no clue who the character is supposed to be anymore.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 9/4/2024, 7:24 AM
@CerealKiller1 - Superman in those movies was super horny. That's why he cared about humanity, or more specifically about that sexy reporter chick he wanted to bone lol

@WarMonkey - if you had to recommend the best seasons to watch what would they be? The old wise man Doctor sounds good.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 9/5/2024, 9:42 AM
@LysergicMeinbal - It's hard to say cause the franchise is so huge. With each new version of the Doctor character they would bring in a new actor. Many including myself started with Tom Baker's run and he's still one of the most popular Doctors. The show was kinda sorta rebooted with Chris Eccleston in the 2000s where it's a more modern take on it with improved budgets and sets and stuff. David Tennent who came after Chris is a good point to jump in too. Or even Matt Smith's run. There is like 80 years of canon but basically all you need to know is he's a time-traveler that shows up and helps those in needs and is an alien from an ancient race of super advanced time-travellers.

@WarMonkey - ok well I'll do my research and just start at the very first episode of the series.

I'm sure there were aholes but the latest series is terrible, worse than Whittakers run, which is saying something!

A weak over emotional doctor, who's like a dog on heat, no relationship or character development stupid stories which constantly slap you in the face with tier "progressive" message, wonky morality and a poor actor as the main character
