ARROW Showrunner Beth Schwartz Talks About Season 7 Finale & Possibility Of "Star City 2040" Spinoff

Arrow showrunner Beth Schwartz shares some insight into what we can expect from the Season 7 finale, and also addresses the possibility of a "Star City 2040" series featuring the flash-forward cast.

Arrow is currently in its seventh, and now penultimate season, with the finale five episodes away. Not a lot is currently known about the last ever episode, but social media posts from some of the cast members indicate that it will be something fans probably won't be expecting or ready for, with series star Stephen Amell even sharing that his read of the episode gave him literal goosebumps.

Now, showrunner Beth Schwartz has provided some additional insight into the reactions from the cast, telling TV Line that "the finale script, almost everyone who read it was in tears. I’m very happy with it, and I think the audience is going to really like it.

The current season has split the focus narratively between the present and the future, with flash-forwards in 2040 centering around young cast members Katherine McNamara (Mia Smoak), Ben Lewis (William Queen), Andrea Sixtos (Zoe Ramirez) and Joseph David-Jones (Connor Hawke), joined by the familiar faces of Colton Haynes (Roy Harper), Juliana Harkavy (Dinah Drake), Rick Gonzalez (Rene Ramirez) and Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak).

As fans may remember, episode 16 of this season, which was titled 'Star City 2040,' was almost entirely set in the future. The episode very much felt like a backdoor test pilot for a potential spinoff set in the future, and Schwartz essentially confirms to TV Line that this was the intention, and sets up the possibility of further exploring these characters and this setting down the road.

It was definitely meant to grow the world that we had already built and to see the next generation of what Oliver and Felicity and our present-day team have worked so hard for, and sort of see what happens in the future. We love those characters and would love to see them go on in some capacity after the show’s over. We were so happy, internally, about how it came out. We kind love our future story.

With Arrow coming to an end next year after Season 8, a spinoff series set in the future with the flash-forward cast would certainly help carry forward the mantle and legacy of the show. 'Star City 2040' was very well received by fans and, based on Schwartz's comments, it seems this feeling is reciprocated by those involved with the series at The CW. It is also important to note that Schwartz recently signed a multi-year contract with the network's parent company.

Would you be excited to see a 'Star City 2040' spinoff series after Arrow ends? Are you looking forward to the Season 7 finale?

If they were given a budget to make it not look like they were filming in downtown Toronto then I'd be willing to see something set in the future. But if it's gonna be the same atmosphere but everyone is in plastic Zenon outfits then no thanks.

OT: The Tick season 2 was great. Big Blue even upgraded his suit. This season felt like classic Tick. Loved it.

Arrow was always one of the best of the bad CW shows, even w/ the bad storylines it had for a few seasons. This has been, hands down no doubt in my mind the WORST season of the show. It’s such a shame too, they could have taken this somewhere really special. Oliver could have embraced his dual identity, been a more comic accurate GA.

But this future timeline storyline has been TERRIBLE, BORNING and not well executed. The shows about GA, but everyone and their mother puts on the GA hood in this show. It’s really gone down hill next season. I really hope the next and last season go back to.. hmm

The basics sounds good, maybe even a show that revolves around Oliver and not all these other characters that suck anyway.

It’s called Arrow.. it should be about GA.. not his great grandchildren in the future.. sad to see it go off the air.. but if this is what doodoo they’re gonna be pumping out... then RIP

@MuadDib - Do yourself a favor and don't read Batman Beyond.

Katherine McNamara is so hot it's crazy. But sorry, not watching a show centred around her.

Arrow already became less interesting when focus shifted from the GREEN ARROW and it became a Arrow and Friends show. I can't watch a spin-off about non comic book characters

@RageDriver2401 - Connor Hawke is a comic book character, so there's that.

This season of Arrow has been a chore to watch, worst part of it is all the future crap, this season doesn’t even seem to have a plot other than the team joining the SCPD

It's always nice to come an Arrow article and see the same "I hate the show but I keep watching every episode and reading every article" and "I don't watch the show but I keep up with it and read about it for, some reason" comments. You all know you can just ignore the show exists, right?

Legends already introduced Connor Hawk as Olivers kid now he is reintroduced as the adopted son of John Diggle. Also my bet is they will kill Oliver off in the final. He has yet to be seen or really even talked about in the flash forwards even though in Legends he was alive in the future but missing an arm I believe. I guess we are ignoring all that. In the episode Star city 2040 he is only shown at the birth of his daughter but is never seen again. So they will kill him off. I think that isn't needed. I know he wants to leave the show but keeping him alive but in hiding or something else would be better in case he wants to come back for a cameo in the other CW shows and crossovers. But I am saying he is toast by the end of the season.
