ARROW Star Stephen Amell Claims They "Tried" To Make A GREEN ARROW Movie But Warner Bros. "Killed" It

Arrow star Stephen Amell has revealed that he and producer Greg Berlanti explored the idea of a Green Arrow movie, only for the project to be "killed at the studio level" out of...fear?! Check it out!

Stephen Amell is very proud of the work he did in Arrow and has never shied away from sharing his belief that the Arrowverse wasn't given the respect it deserved by Warner Bros. executives.

The actor frequently campaigned for himself and his fellow actors on The CW to be part of the DCEU, something that was never the plan (no great surprise given the very clear line that the studio has always drawn between its big and small screen adaptations).

Catching up with Smallville alum Michael Rosenbaum, Amell reflected on working with prolific producer Greg Berlanti and talk soon turned to a possible Arrow revival.

"I mean I joked about it," he said, "because I think that it would be wonderful one these days to go back and do something that was in a medium where I could break bones and drop an F-bomb and just sort of go the 'hard R' [rating] version of Arrow."

When Rosenbaum put it to him that they could make an Arrow movie, Amell added, "That'd be fun. We tried to do that...to my understanding, it just got killed at the studio level from people that, I think, were making decisions...that were fear-based."

We're not entirely sure what he means by that, though one possible interpretation is that he believes DCEU executives were concerned about the Arrowverse characters overshadowing the likes of Henry Cavill's Superman and Ben Affleck's Batman.

Either way, it's hard to imagine those talks ever getting serious because the Arrowverse had its place on The CW and was successful on the once teen-focused network.

There were once plans for an R-Rated Green Arrow movie called Supermax which was going to follow Oliver Queen as he attempted to escape from a prison full of iconic DC Comics supervillains. Amell was never attached to that and the project failed to ever get off the ground.

"That was a little unnecessary. I didn’t f***ing appreciate that at all," Amell recently said of Peacemaker's jokes at Green Arrow's expense. "Okay. I am just going to come right out and say this. There was just such...between the movies and Peacemaker a little bit...our show was kind of treated like shit. I get it, we’re on the CW, I get it, it’s TV."

"But I also get the fact that when people think about the most recent iteration of DC, they don’t think about the Snyder Cut - they think about the Arrowverse," Amell continued. "We got crapped on for years, and years, and years, and this just seemed excessive. I’m not actually mad, but I just remember hearing that and just being like, 'F*** those guys,' like seriously."

@bobevanz - Replace "nobody" with "I" if you're trying to speak for someone. I love those shows at their height. They were running neck and neck with the MCU as far as showing how to do comic book style storytelling and crossovers. Arrow and Legends were the best and if it wasnt for covid the Arrowverse could have ended with a bang. It spawned the best Superman since Christopher Reeve in Superman and Lois!

"it just got killed at the studio level from people that, I think, were making decisions...that were fear-based."

Fear-based as in dumping heaps of money onto a film that won't make money? Then I'm with WB on that one.

@IAmAHoot - yeah

As a fan of the Arrowverse , that movie would have had a limited audience.

Thank [frick] for that. We deserve to see Green Arrow in all his glory on the big screen, not whatever poor man’s Dark Knight the CW and Amell were trying to peddle.

[frick] the Arrowverse and all those leather clad losers

I still wanna see that Supermax film. that idea would have been so awesome.
I'm sure WBs was scared to have so many bad guys from across all the DC I.P.s in one film that it never really had any take-off steam behind it.

Lmao a show on the CW is one thing, they were not about to put a bunch of money into a movie featuring those versions of characters though.

Call Gunn, maybe he’d be open to an R rated elseworlds movie on Max 🤷🏻‍♂️

Also, if you’re upset about “being crapped in for years and years”, maybe, idk, have better writing and acting 🤷🏻‍♂️

@DanFlashesShirt - that’s not what he means with being crapped on (even though writing and acting are subjective)

DC/WB woukd always give them the short shrift and restrict them from using characters or CW woukd cut their budget , I can understand his frustration then

"We're not entirely sure what he means by that."

Depends on when a movie was pitched.

If in it's early days, they would've been coming off Green Lantern, and maybe they didn't want to risk the good (in comparison to GL) vibes they were getting for Man of Steel.

If it was later days, then they were so convinced that their attempt at Justice League would work, that they weren't wanting to rock the boat.

A Supermax GA movie done right would crush. It would take the onus off the many batman related things going on at the moment. Which is a bit too much for my liking. Let Bats take a bit of time off and use either a gritty GA to fill the spot. OptimusRhymes has spoken

I’m glad it didn’t happen honestly since even though the Arrowverse (and the show itself) has its fans , I think Amell & co overestimate how it would have translated to the box office since that is still relatively small imo.

Regardless , the show and that universe had its highs & lows but still hold a special place in my heart since it really cemented me as a fan of superheroes and this genre as a whole!!,

If James Gunn ever casts a new Green Arrow this man is going to be the saltiest critic imaginable.

@Lysander45 - I agree. During arrow I always thought he was humble and and quite down to earth but ever since it finished and his stock has been on the decrease... He's come across as a bit of a dbag and a bit butt hurt. He should take the win that was "arrow" ...for the first couple of seasons anyway..and chill. He's probably struggled to get other projects/jobs... And it's taking its toll. Y'all hear about the bust up he had with his Mrs on that flight that time? Not sure of the deets ATM but I remember it coming across as super douchey at the time

Sucha. lame character. No powers, shoots arrows, somehow never dies fighting literal super powered beings (Hawkeye too).

@JobinJ - Replace "shoots arrows" and replace it with "throws bat-shaped boomerangs" and now you have Batman.

@Himura - And the most popular version of Batman doesn't even use guns or any "lethal" weapons.

Sounds more like an idea that was kicked around in very early stages but never got the traction to go into development than something that was "killed."
