CW President Says No More DC Comics Spinoffs After LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

CW President Mark Pedowitz told reporters during the TCA tour that the new Legends of Tomorrow show would be the last DC Comics spinoff for the foreseeable future. But what happens after Arrow season 5? Will Legends of Tomorrow continue beyond one season?

The CW has exactly 10 hours of oringal programs to air each week during its primetime broadcasting hours.  Three of those hours will be occupied by Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.  In an effort to keep  The CW from being renamed 'The DC'. CW President Mark Pedowitz stated that there will not be a new DC Comics show added to the network anytime soon.  Disappointing news if you were somehow hoping that Matt Ryan's Constantine would further expand its migration from NBC to The CW in the form of a new show.  For now, you'll just simply have to settle for the con artists of the magic world appearing in cameos.   The same can be said for The CW Seed's Vixen, who will be voiced by  Megalyn Echikunwoke.  Don't expect Echikunwoke to get her own live-action Vixen TV series but perhaps she'll have a cameo appearance.

If The CW is is fixated on not having more than 30% of their original programming be comprised of DC Comics superhero shows then the development of any new spinoff  hinges on the success of Legends of Tomorrow and how long Arrow will continue.  There's unconfirmed rumors that Arrow would end after the 5-years of flashbacks chronicling Oliver's time on Lian Yu (and elsewhere) were all retold.   Again, this is an unconfirmed rumor but one that makes sense.   Five seasons would be just enough to get the show into the coveted syndication category.

As for Legends of Tomorrow, if ratings don't hold up, it's unlikely that the show would return for a second season which would potentially open the door for another DC Comics show to replace it.  But the failure of Legends of Tomorrow would probably have a negative impact on Arrow and Flash so hopefully the show is a hit and it can continue to build off the momentum already established on The Flash and Arrow.

Dammit.

Anyways, I don't see LOT failing miserably. It'll do fine.

It'll do fine but hopefully they'll keep it as a maxi-series and rotate it out after the season anyway. Then they can keep having one-season series in that time slot as a way to introduce new characters and keep it interesting.

FINALLY...the line had to be drawn somewhere. DC has been whoring out their properties for TV like crazy and it finally started to come back and bite them. Constantine got canned. Supergirl will likely be canned. Hopefully Gotham and others will go next.

Same thing with the ABC Marvel shows. Agents of SHIELD doesn't need to go more than 3 seasons. Agent Carter doesn't need to go more than 2 seasons.

The movies are not what is over-saturating the superhero genre, it is all of these damn TV shows.

This is partially true, and partially not. During the TCA panel, Mark said that while he doesn't see any more DC spin-offs, or at least right now, he did say that he didn't even expect Legends of Tomorrow to be made either after The Flash was just spun off of Arrow. So, I don't think that even puts a stamp on there not being any more spin-offs.

But Legends of Tomorrow, if taken as an anthology, S2 will be as different as S1 so it could feel like just another show as well.

If AoS stops at three seasons, then that's fine by me. The show known as the black sheep of the MCU needs to end anyways.

@chrispyg

Gotham isn't going anywhere. It's the highest rated CBTV show other than The Walking Dead. None of the others even comes close.

@Amazing12

I disagree with the losing steam soon part due to many properties spread across film and television.

I will agree with you when The Flash and Green Arrow hit the big screen. Right now all we have is Superman, Batman, and WW coming to the big screen soon.

I give it another two years!

@MisterSuperior: Ok we did have a long argument about that. And that has changed a long. But lets not talk about that.

Lets take a look on another perspective. The whole TV section of MCU has been viewed as a black sheep of MCU. Daredevil, Agent Carter and AoS S2(sorry but it is) was a critical acclaim, but Fiege has been always skeptical about this section. Especially since he hasn't watched Daredevil TV series a month ago, cared less about it.

Now on topic. Sad to hear about this. We could have got some potentialy great series. But on the other the attention could be given to HBO for doing DC TV shows. A Red Hood TV series could be awesome.

That's a odd line to draw and one that seems to hold no weight. If the ratings for the comics show are much higher than other shows then obviously they would be adding more comics shows, if the ratings aren't good then they won't.

Good, Arrow has already showed some major signs of suffering just after 1 spin-off.
