GOTHAM Actor, Cory Michael Smith Talks About The Main Big Bad Of GOTHAM And His Role On The Show.

If you are planning on checking out Fox's new show, based on the origins of DC Comics' Batman, take a look at what Cory Michael Smith (Edward Nigma) had to say in a recent interview.

With the recent news that two more characters (Dr. Hugo Strange, and Harvey Dent), some fans have been left wondering if it will cause problems with the development of the show's story given the already big gallery of villains to be introduced, and the not so succesful outcomes of CBMs that were loaded with villains.

Do not fear though, as it seems producers have reassured in interviews that they have it all mapped out and will give the characters and the show's main villain their proper time on screen and help develop their stories to avoid such things from happening in Gotham.

Also, not all of Batman's foes will be portrayed as evil, sadistic, "I want to take over the world" criiminals.
in a recent interview, Michael Cory Smith, who will be portraying Edward Nigma aka The Riddler had this to say regarding the portrayal of his character and the role he will be playing.

This first season’s going to be about the rise of the Penguin.
But I’m starting from a place of being with the Gotham City Police Department, being a good guy…. my intentions are completely positive. I’m trying to contribute, and it’s starting from the beginning, that Harvey Bullock is being a little rude, mistreating me… I’m underappreciated..

The lovely thing about the Riddler is he’s not someone that is a sadist; he doesn’t hurt people.

What he does is he sets up tricks to make people be as smart as him. “Prove you’re as smart as me. Figure this out. I’m smarter than you. You don’t understand that. Try to figure this out. If you don’t get it, something terrible is going to happen. I don’t want it to happen, you don’t want it to happen, so figure it out.”

Edward Nigma helping the Gotham City P.D. seems plausible. Given how the character is often portayed as a man of slim build and somewhat socially awkard, it makes sense that he would try and help clean the city that is supposed to be full of criminals and in that way it makes the city safer for him. At the same time, him helping the PD will provide him with protection and security of having police officers at his side.
Given actor Cory Smith's statements, it appears that even his fellow acquantices will find ways to shun him for one reason or another and in turn lead him to a path where he will take matters into his own hands to feel safe and therefore creating The Riddler. When that time will come still remains to be seen as it is stated that the show will focus on Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin's rise to power.

What do you guys think about Edward Nigma starting off as a "good guy"? Does it make sense you, or how would you have introduced/developed his storyline?

The show will explore the story of Detective James Gordon and the impact he is to have in young Bruce Wayne's life following the assassination of his parents.

DrDoom...I almost gave up on the Leftovers after two episodes. That third episode with Father Doctor Who was actually pretty good though.
