Of all of the the potential source material for the third season of Gotham to draw from, the American presidential election may have been the last thing fans expected. As politicians such as Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton compete against each other in the real world, it seems that the Batman prequel will also be there to tackle the issue head on as it enters its third season this fall. Actor Cory Michael Smith (who portrays Edward Nygma) stated such in an interview with Cinefilos.

According to Smith, "Gotham, like many superhero stories, is a parallel of today's society, of what happens every day, and in the third season, in the fall, when the United States will stand preparing to face one of the most important presidential elections in their history, even Gotham will address in parallel the issue."

How exactly the show will address the topic is anyone's guess at this point, though Gotham City has been without a mayor since the departure of Theo Galavan in the "Rise of the Villains" storyline from Season 2. The third season of the Fox television series is slated to premiere 19 September 2016.

So Gotham doesn't take place in the past/90s-to-early-2000s?

@TheLemsterPju -
The show is meant to be "timeless," like BATMAN TAS.

"Gotham, like many superhero stories, is a parallel of today's society, of what happens every day"

No it isn't. Gotham has never drawn parallels with today's world. At best it has parodied very old gangster and criminal culture that simply doesn't exist in the same way in the present day world.

"and in the third season, in the fall, when the United States will stand preparing to face one of the most important presidential elections in their history, even Gotham will address in parallel the issue."

Whoever the winner is, the US is rather doomed. I don't think Gotham even has villains who are worse than the current potential presidents of the US...

Does that mean Harvey Dent will be the Donald Trump of that universe?

Didn't Harvey Dent have dark hair in the show?

I'm so sick of these people interjecting politics in stuff. I'm tired of hearing the BS from both sides. Can't we escape in anything anymore?
