With the premiere of Gotham Season 5 just less than two weeks away, Fox has dropped the show's extended final trailer, giving fans a look ahead at what to expect from the oncoming season. We see an apocalyptic Gotham City, quaranteed by the government and taken over by criminals as Bruce Wayne and the GCPD battle to regain control. Among the warring gangs are the Penguin, Barbara, Scarecrow, Zsasz, and the Mutants, whose leader is shown confronting Bruce, Dark Knight Returns-style. Speaking of confrontations, Bruce is also seen pummeling Jeremiah Valeska/Proto-Joker at Ace Chemicals, an amnesic Riddler reunites with the Penguin, and James Gordon seems to have a pre-established relationship with the man who becomes Bane.

The finale will have Bruce Wayne finally taking on the mantle of the Batman, who will don a matte metallic short-eared battlesuit that executive producer John Stephens compared to the Dark Knight Rises costume. Jeremiah reportedly isn't the final character to become the Joker, but is rather another precursor like Jerome (although that certainly doesn't necessarily mean that he won't be played by Cameron Monaghan). Among other characters who will appear this season include Firefly, Ivy Pepper, Mr. Freeze, Man-Bat, Lady Shiva, Mother and Orphan, and Ecco: the precursor to Harley Quinn.

We also have a couple of clips from Season 5 Episode 1 "Year Zero," showing Bruce and Gordon reflecting on events from the pilot episode and forshadowing the former's turn into Gotham's dark knight.

Gotham Season 5 Episode 1 "Year Zero" airs on January 3, 2019 via Fox.

Such a shame it's ending, I will miss i. I know it's not for everyone I almost wrote it off after season 1 but stuck with it and it has got better like Agents Of SHIELD.

@doomsday619 - Yeah Gotham season 1 was good, but a bit slow at times, and with plenty of room for improvement. The writers learned from their mistakes and managed to improve the show every season, keeping what worked and downplaying what didn't. I stopped watching Agents Of SHIELDS after season 1

@dracula - Agents of SHIELD is worth getting back too gets so much better with later season's. It's my favourite CBTV show.

@doomsday619 - I liked season 1, but i didn't think there was anything special about it, but I was going to watch season 2, but then Flash, Constantine and Gotham came out, and im a DC guy so i chose them over it, then all these other DC shows came out. Plus i was really disapointed that Joss Whedon had no involvement outside of the pilot

You gotta respect how many classic villains they've brought into the show, and how the majority of their portrayals are pretty good.
