THE SUICIDE SQUAD Star Margot Robbie Talks Future As Harley Quinn And Passing The Mantle To Other Actresses

Rumours continue to swirl about Margot Robbie's possible future in the DCU as Harley Quinn, and the actress herself has now addressed that after being asked about Lady Gaga's role in the Joker sequel.

Margot Robbie first played Harley Quinn in 2016's Suicide Squad, later reprising the role in Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn - renamed Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey following a disappointing opening weekend - and James Gunn's The Suicide Squad

All those movies took place in the DCEU, of course, and with DC Studios set to relaunch that franchise as the DCU, it's unclear whether there's a place for Robbie.

Gunn has hinted that he might bring her back and hasn't shied away from enlisting the DCEU actors he enjoyed working with for his reboot (The Suicide Squad's Viola Davies and John Cena are among them). The question is, does Robbie want to return?

Variety recently spoke with the Barbie star and wondered if she's planning to say goodbye to the role now that Lady Gaga is playing the character in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux.

"I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters," Robbie tells the trade. "That was always the dream for her."

"Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, 'What are they going to do with her?' The options are endless."

Tellingly, there's no mention of the DCU or whether Robbie is gearing up to bid farewell to the fan-favourite anti-hero. It's clear she wouldn't be against the idea, though, and if the actress really is keen to share the character...well, will she want to return as Harley nearly a decade after first playing her?

"I know it's crazy," Robbie said in 2022 of the plans to start over with the DC brand. "And Peter Safran, so he was also the producer on The Suicide Squad, so I know them both really well and they're a dynamic duo. I think that's such a get for DC."

Robbie would go on to confirm she'd like to see Harley explore her comic book romance with Poison Ivy. Their relationship has been tackled in HBO Max's Harley Quinn animated series, and it's a dynamic fans remain keen to see play out in live-action as well.

"I have been pushing for that for years. I cannot tell you how hard I've been pushing for that. I want it too," the actress said. "Honestly, when I pictured, I always picture like Poison Ivy in the comics. I don't really actually picture an actress doing it, but I agree, that would be so good."

Do you think we'll see more of Robbie's Harley Quinn in the DCU?

She's was alright. Birds of Prey (even though it was far from source) was an underrated movie that got buried by the pandemic.

@UniqNo - I kinda said the same a few posts down.

@UniqNo - wouldnt call it underrated but was for sure a victim of the pandemic

Had its run cut really short

But pretty sure it still broke even

@dracula - It flopped. That was the first if the 9 consecutive DCEU flops.
It earned $205.4 million worldwide, but needed to gross $250–300 million to break even.

@Baf - In general. There's alot of movies with decent RT scores that just haven't been seen by the masses.

She was a great Harley. Didn’t love the Emancipation or SS but she was great as the character.

There’s only one person who comes to mind to be a fantastic replacement and that’s Mia Goth but I doubt they’re going to replace Margot any time soon unless WB’s broke ass can’t afford her no more lol

@TheLobster - Yeah, she just helped them get a big bag last year to help with their losses with the DCEU stuff.

With make up she could do another 30 years as the character. She ain't going nowhere.

Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is SO underrated. Lots of action, drama, and being hilarious. Don't get people's beef with this.

"Tellingly, there's no mention of the DCU or whether Robbie is gearing up to bid farewell to the fan-favorite anti-hero."

So you are basically saying sorry I wasted your time with this pointless article. Do better.

shes been fine in the role. not blown away by anymeans but she hasnt been bad either. lets be honest, she just made BANK for WB so she isnt going anywhere if she doesnt want to
clintthahamster
clintthahamster - 1/3/2024, 12:43 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - This. She's easy on the eyes, and a fine actress, but she doesn't bring anything particularly unique or essential to the role. I'd say someone with more of a comic background could be a good fit. Not sure if she can act, but Sarah Sherman is pretty much born for the role.

She did well with the material she was given. I would’ve loved to see Robbie’s Quinnzel in an actual Batman movie.

I'd just like to highlight this for all of fandom:

"I cannot tell you how hard I've been pushing for that. I want it too. Honestly, when I pictured, I always picture like Poison Ivy in the comics."

And a little louder for those in the cheap seats:

"I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW HARD...I WANT IT...I PICTURED..."

You're altogether welcome.

Honestly, let the character rest for a while. Margot is fine as Harley nothing more. They can still do better.

Birds of Prey sucked, but she played Harley really well. Still would've loved to seen the classic jumpsuit more versus the tattooed roller-girl glittery psycho chick.

Nothing against the actress but her Harley did nothing for me if she gets a reboot I hope it's closer to the batman animated series Harley and not that gender swapped Deadpool who's plagued DC for over 10 years now.
