It's been confirmed that The CW has cancelled Supernatural spin-off The Winchesters after one season. The series, produced by Jensen Ackles, will now be shopped to other networks and the actor has already begun encouraging fans to #SaveTheWinchesters.
This comes as the network is going through some huge changes, with the vast majority of scripted TV shows being scrapped in an effort to save money.
Addressing the latest round of cancellations, a statement from The CW reads, "As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions. We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of ‘Kung Fu’ and ‘The Winchesters’ for all their hard work, creativity and dedication."
According to Variety, Superman & Lois and Gotham Knights are still waiting for news on their respective futures, but "[neither] are expected to continue at this time."
The Hollywood Reporter has a slightly more positive update, revealing that sources tell them "the network will likely opt to bring only one of the two DC shows back." While Superman & Lois has a larger audience (an average of 1.2 million viewers compared to Gotham Knights' 675,000), it's considerably more expensive to produce and that means the show about Batman's sidekicks is more likely to survive.
It's also worth noting that with James Gunn's Superman: Legacy set to begin shooting next year for a 2025 release, it's highly unlikely that Superman & Lois will stick around, especially with plans to bring all the DC TV shows under one roof on Max.
The Flash, Riverdale, and Nancy Drew are all ending this year, while Stargirl also recently wrapped up. Titans has just aired its final episode on HBO Max, while Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow were cancelled in 2022.
