Why SUPERMAN & LOIS Will Return For Season 4 According TO CW Exec

There was a time when The CW was the go-to place for live-action DC Comics dramas.  Stephen Amell's Arrow led the way along with a host of spinoffs including The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Black Lightning

As those shows began to draw to a close, a new, younger crop of superhero shows seemed poised to carry the torch such as Stargirl and Gotham Knights

Today, all these shows have either concluded or been outright canceled as the network faced significant financial challenges in recent years which ultimately saw Warner Bros. and CBS sell controlling interest of the network to Nexstar Media. And with new owners comes a change in leadership and programming strategy.

Yet, there's one DC Comics adaptation that seems to be flying high in the face of adversity, Superman & Lois.

Speaking to The Wrap recently, The CW's president of entertainment  Brad Schwartz explained why they're sticking with Superman & Lois.

"It was very easy to focus on those four [Superman & Lois, along with Walker, All-American, and All-American: Homecoming] as our biggest shows and best performers. And then it was also easier to have conversations with CBS and Warner about 'How can we make these shows work for everybody' because there was a successful track record," Schwartz said.

"CBS and Warner Bros. know what they make on them internationally, know what they make from their Netflix and HBO sales. We know how they do for us. They can project what a library of 60 or 70 episodes is going to make for them forever. You can put all the math together and be like, 'Is there a path for us as partners?"

So in short, it all came down to the numbers- specifically what future earnings from streaming and syndication could bring in. It seems Superman & Lois warranted another season while many other CW shows did not.

But those financial challenges are still rearing their head for Superman & Lois as several of the cast members have been demoted to either guest or recurring characters for season 4.

With Superman & Lois surviving for season 4, fans have already begun to speculate on whether the upcoming season will be its last.

Traditionally, fans could look forward to San Diego Comic-Con (which kicks off on July 20) for a big news update but the show appears to be skipping the fan convention this year.

Really excited to see what season 4 has in store for us. While I felt s3, while still a strong season, was weaker compared to the prior 2, the final 2 episodes were excellent (especially the finale). Very much looking forward to the showdown with Doomsday and Lex.

Can't wait for season 4. Got to wonder how it will pick up.

Doubt they will pick up right where season 4 left off. Usually stuff like this is resolved through flashbacks in the first episode which will take place some time later.

I could see them starting off on the day of a funeral. Clark isn't around, so people are suppose to assume it's his. Turns out it's General Lane's. Then reveal Clark and Doomsday hasn't been seen since they went to the moon. Then show the fight's final moments.

Then get an episode of maybe Jon trying to fill in, then reveal Clark's whereabouts at the end.

Then end the third episode with Clark reuniting with his family

@dracula - A year has passed since "the death of Superman". Jon has moved into his girlfriend's house, Jordan is Superboy most of the time, and Lois takes refuge in her work while she publicly tries to destroy Lex. The family has distanced themselves from each other.

Season four may be about reuniting the family.

“ They can project what a library of 60 or 70 episodes is going to make for them forever. You can put all the math together and be like, 'Is there a path for us as partners?”

Aka. “Whats the minimum fee we as a network have to come up with to get your shows to a final set of episodes so it sells better in syndication?”

They gutted crew, cast and locations. I expect this to be on par of budget as early Smallville seasons towards the end of the WB.
Good the show will have an ending but bad that it’ll be this way

"How can we make these shows work for everybody"

Please dont. This just sounds like they're gonna CW-fy the show. The only thing that can come out of cutting most of the cast is streamlining the plot. I hope this doesnt turn into them fighting doppelgangers from Bizarro world again. It works when they dont overdo it, unlike every other CW show out there, just to save money by having cast members play multiple characters.

Shouldn't they have been talking to DC Studios?

wonder why the CW wants Lex with facial hair? it's not a bad decision, but very consistent

Glad this show wasn’t canceled on a cliffhanger and can go out on its own terms.
