GAME OF THRONES Director On Moving Past The Published Books

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are reportedly not shying away from more scenes like the final moments of last Sunday's episode, where the HBO drama moved past what's been revealed thus far in George R.R. Martin's fantasy saga.

On last week's revelation about the White Walkers, Game of Thrones director Michelle MacLaren stated, "I was so blown away to find out what they are doing with the babies. I thought 'Wow.' I was very excited to do that. I had thought they ate the babies – isn't that horrible?" She continued, "Dan (Weiss) and David (Benioff) are such great writers. It's exciting to see where they are going to go moving beyond the books, which is starting to happen more and more."

Thus far, 'A Song of Ice and Fire" has five published novels from George R.R. Martin. The sixth, "The Winds of Winter" will be published in 2015 and already has sample chapters online for loyal readers to ponder over. But the seventh and final novel, "A Dream of Spring" is still a long ways off if we go by Martin's usual writing pace. There was a six year gap between "A Feast for Crows" and "A Dance with Dragons" and four years will have elapsed before "The Winds of Winter" is published. We're probably looking at 2018 or 2019 as the year that "A Dream of Spring" is released. By that time, the HBO series will long be over. Heck, a prequel series centered around "Dunk and Egg" might already be on television screens by the time "A Dream of Spring" is released.

As a reader of the series, starting many years ago, it's a little disconcerting to think that the show will spoil the broader points of the series long before the printed manuscripts arrive on Amazon and at Barnes and Nobles. No matter how good the HBO series is, it still pales in comparison to the level of detail Martin's put in the books.

Well... I hope they do stick to the book storyline despite me not reading them. I would not want some Walking Dead shit where it barely resembles the source material. I simply assumed this ending was then taking a scene from something like TWOW and using it early on.

I hear from book readers these two apparently worship/glorify Daenerys. Only curious how this differs from the books?

Yall act like Martin wont be directly involved and giving them direction. He knows where the story is going, and how it will end.

MetahumanAbominationKlone: well, not according to the latest episode where she deliberately had 163 random masters killed (which could have included some of the more peaceful slave owners who might actually not have abused their own slaves I'm just saying, she has no idea because individual facts don't matter to her and the showrunners know it) without a trial (Tyrion gets a trial in Westeros but the slave masters don't, sounds kinda tyrannical of her to me) and she rejected mercy in favor of revenge because it made her feel better. She essentially replaced one symbol of oppression by another. You don't seriously think someone can have a winning streak like hers and not have a few problems in this world? Just wait and see...

I think the intention right now is maybe to make her less likable... that's the impression I am getting as I like her less and less.

"I think where they went wrong is when they deviated from the source material because some studio director thought they could improve on Stan Lee. You can't improve on Stan Lee." -- George RR Martin on his love of comic books.

Please don't morally equivocate Daenerys with the slaveholders. They deliberately either ordered or allowed the brutal execution of children. I didn't agree with the practicality of her decision to choose revenge over justice but she's never stooped so low as to deliberately kill children.

So basically, the shoe will be on the other foot when the series ends. All the smug "oooooh, I know what's gonna happen and you don't" attitude will be for the show watchers.

whatever, i'll still watch it. martin might never finish the books and the show cuts a lot of bloat. i just want to see the ending, couldn't care less where i see it first. and i'm saying this as someone who started reading asoiaf years before the show even started.

Well...good luck with that. (And I'm saying that more like how you'd agree with a friend that maybe the girlfriend WILL come to her senses and take him back, not in a smarmy sarcastic way.)

I do suspect though that as the show does overtake the books, a lot of book purists and fans etc will stop with the show. Of course not all, but when you can easily go buy the bluray later on, it's not a big deal to hold off until after the books are finished up. If the books get finished up.

It'll be a major bummer if, in 2019, Martin decides to split Dream into two books, with the "final" one to be published in 2029.

I'll never read the books either, but I don't begrudge the fans who do. I actually think it's pretty amazing to stick with something even when it keeps getting delayed, and stretched out etc. Didn't it originally start out as a trilogy?

And I get that the books are overwhelmingly dense, and if that's what you're into, then they're probably truly amazing. I just really don't have the time to devote properly to such a thing. Maybe in 20-30 years, when I'm retired, and Martin is about to release the final book, I will get started.

They might make it in time. Season 5 will be based on the 4th book next year. Now as Martin suggested, they could split seasons 6 and 7, based on the 5th book, which is just as long as the 3rd book, into 2 seasons. And next year, supposedly, the 6th book, Winds of Winter, comes out. So season 8, in 2018, could be based on the 6th book, giving Martin time to finish the 7th and final book, hopefully for a 2018 summer release, which can then be made into season 9 for spring of 2019. I know it sounds confusing, but it makes sense, if HBO decides to go that route.

Its impossible for a show or movie to be as detailed as a book so saying that is not a knock on GoT.

Regardless, this is a great story and no matter the media it will continue to be great.

I just want to know what's good with Benjen Stark. Glad they're moving faster than the books, too much weightless space in some of the more recent books.

Ryguy88

thedangle, I heard the goal was to make this series 8 seasons...but if ratings keep going up every year I doubt they wouldn't be down to elongate it to 9.

Maybe a movie is possible too...but that couldn't cover nearly as many plot points as the show does unless the narrative becomes much more focused which, by the sounds of the later book titles, sounds like it may.

I heard they've mapped out to 7, they EXPECT it to end there but will continue if they have the funds and ratings.

However, there has been NO official anouncement, when The Winds of Winter will be released. There is no release date. The only thing we have is a statement from Martin's UK publisher, Jane Johnson, who wrote via Twitter that the book would "certainly" not be published before 2015.

@ElectricBogaloo

I've also read that they plan to end with season 7. Ought to mean even less meandering for the next couple years.

HBO of course wants viewers etc, but they understand that high quality programming is what gets that. And they really tend to want to end shows well, rather than stretching them out. Sopranos was HUGE, but they wrapped it up anyway.

My idea is that they film and show the series up until the 6th book. And then, film the 7th book stuff and save it on the back burner until the book actually comes out to release the final season. Martin does love to troll people, so why not?

@electricbogaloo, @ryguy88...I read a couple of different stories as well. First they said 7 seasons, then 8, then read they want to stretch it out to finish Martin's work. I can't see ratings for this show diminishing anytime soon, or in the near future. I'm sure they have the funding, and I'm sure, demanded by enough people, they will continue and finish the entire story...hopefully, no matter how many seasons.

I don't really think they're going to do seven seasons, and then that's the end. They're actually going to wrap the story up in seven seasons. So rather than sticking to the 1 season = roughly a book, for most seasons, they'll start compressing even more. And I've not read the books, but it sounds like as they progress, they really lose focus and there's a lot of fat that can be trimmed, a lot of characters that can be lost, and still get to the point of the tale.

So, wrapping it up in seven seasons, to me, doesn't mean some abrupt end with an incomplete story. They'll just get to the point a lot faster than the novels.

And I'm not saying one is better. Like I said before, if this is what you're into, then of course you'll enjoy wallowing in the novels.

I just hope Dungeons and Dragons don't [frick] up. Daenerys storyline gets really messy in book 5 so I hope they do something about it, specially considering how she used to be my favorite and more importantly the great potential and importance of that storyline. I also really hope they don't butcher books 4 and 5 characters and do something stupid like merge the Sand Snakes into 1 or 2. That would really piss me off.
Get on with the books George, you may not have long.
