GAME OF THRONES Final Season Directors Officially Revealed
With another season in the books, HBO has officially revelaed which directors will be crafting the final six episodes of their hit fantasy series, Game of Thrones, and there's more than one familiar name.
Entertainment Weekly has learned that Primetime Emmy-winner Miguel Sapochnik and 2x Primetime Emmy-winner David Nutter have been tapped to direct five of the six episodes in the coming eighth and final season of HBO's Game of Thrones.
Sapochnik, who has helmed some of the series' finest hours, including "The Gift" and "Hardhome" in season five and then, "Battle of the Bastards" - for which he won his Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series - and "The Winds of Winter" in season six. This certainly bodes well for fans expecting to see the battle to end all battles next season as we slowly, but surely, approach Jon Snow's final confrontation with the Night King and his army of the dead.
Nutter has directed six episodes for the critically-acclaimed series, including "The Old Gods and the New" and "A Man Without Honor" in season two, "The Rains of Castamere" and "Mhysa" in season three, and more recently, "The Dance of Dragons" and "Mother's Mercy" in season five. Now, while Sapochnik's addition suggests that some epic battle sequences are incoming, Nutter's involvement may or may not suggest some major heartbreak may be on the way as his past credits include two of the most devastating and shocking moments in the series' long-running history: the Red Wedding and Jon Snow's death.
Sapochnik is expected to helm at least two episodes, maybe three, while Nutter will tackle two.
As for the series finale, which will reportedly shoot multiple endings, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss will take on directing duties for that final bow. The duo previously helmed season three's third episode, "Walk of Punishment," and season four's season premiere, "Two Swords." In the past, they've split the credit, but with this being the final episode and all, it's a little uncertain how they'll handle it this time around.
Production begins in October, but it's still unknown whether the final season will debut in 2018 or 2019.
