GAME OF THRONES Officially Becomes The Most Popular Show In HBO History

Woah! We knew the numbers were very good, but now the fantasy drama series has crushed the head of its competition, The Sopranos, to become the most-watched show in the premium cable network’s history. More past the jump..

Someone finally took the crown from King Tony Soprano, as HBO announced today that their excellent fantasy series Game Of Thrones has surpassed the incredibly popular mob drama's high-point viewership with 18.4 million weekly viewers -- 200,000 ahead of The Sopranos at its peak back in 2002. Game Of Thrones is up 4 million viewers from its third season, and with two very anticipated episodes to go in this fourth season, that will probably only get higher. The next episode, "The Watchers on the Wall" airs on Sunday, June 8, followed by the season finale "The Children" on Sunday, June 15.

I miss Joffrey. He was my homeboy.

If you factor in all the views it gets from piracy and downloads, wouldn't it outrank even The Walking Dead? Anyways, but next season it will probably increase to a good 10 million views per episode, which means shit won't have be cut like in Season One, Two and even Three (battle with the Night's Watch and White Walkers).

I think I still like Rome more than Game of Thrones. The Newsroom is a good show, too.

@B&Y

Rome and GOT are neck and neck. The only thing is Rome only had 2 seasons. I sooo wanted much more. I still watch The Sopranos. I got all season on my external drive.

Phenomenal. I really want to read the books, but at the same time don't want to limit the amount of enjoyment and surprises I could have.

To anyone who's read the book and watched the show, how close is it to the source?

@Phron

First season is VERY close to the books. The second less so and third and fourth, from what I have been told, stray away in a lot of areas.

@Charlie2094 Thanks, man, I really really want to get into the books. Something I plan on doing this summer.

@kev

Yes, but doesn't GoT have a much higher piracy/online rate than The Walking Dead because HBO is far less available than AMC?

@Klone Yeah, I've heard that too, but season two being (In my opinion) an improvement over season 1, that's not a big deal to me.

@Phron

The first book can be somewhat unengaging, despite its brilliance, because the first season is so close to it, right down the dialogue, so you're basically reading a description of scenes you know well and there are no surprises, but there is plenty of new stuff in the second book and more surprises.

Off the top of my mind, the only significant things they left out in Season One was:
-Blackfish
-Ned's dream
-Robb vs. Joffrey
-Some history of Westeros
-Battle of the Whispering Wood
-Battle of the Green Fork

They left out more, and others they changed were fine, nothing to get angry over, such as the Hound telling Sansa his backstory himself, not Littlefinger.

Let's put it this way, Phron, if you're someone who is easily angered by big changes to characters, story elements, etc. you may want to put if off for a while.

@Klone My attitude towards changes all depend on how it's handled. If it's for the good of the story so be it, but if it's a change for the sake of... Change, then no.

There are some changes that are there for the sake of change honestly...

Game of Thrones is the most popular tv show of all time if you count people who watch GOT on stream websites.

so glad I binge watched this show earlier this year and jumped on the bandwagon.
Show is so [frick]ing good. Between this, Newsroom, Walking Dead and True Detective tv has been so good to me.

I think Ror is being facetious. I don't believe he thinks Jacky is fascinating at all. I'm very insightful like that.

It isn't really fair to Sopranos. This has a midget and Sopranos did not.
