Neil Marshall On GAME OF THRONES "...Butcher Them Brutally"

Neil Marshall, the director behind the epic Battle of the Blackwater discusses the Red Wedding and teases a similar episode in Season 4 of HBO's Game of Thrones. Marshall also picks who among George R.R. Martin's cast of characters he'd ultimately like to see win the Iron Throne.

"I wouldn't doubt it [of there being a Red Wedding-like episode in Season 4]. I think that's one of the key things of Game of Thrones, which is to take characters that you loved for three of four years and then butcher them brutally. Yeah, there's a bit of drama and tragedy in my episode so I'm sure there is for the rest of the season as well."

Marshall directs episode nine of the ten episodes that comprise season 4. And as always, the penultimate episode of each season of Game of Thrones is the one that has the most action, biggest budget and shocking twists.

"Season 4 of Game of Thrones was formally commissioned by HBO on April 2, 2013 after viewer ratings showed a substantial increase between the second and third season openers. Due to the sheer length of the third novel, which is roughly 1.5 times the size of the first novel, the events of "A Storm of Swords" was split between season 3 and the upcoming season 4. However, Season 4 may also contain some material from the fourth and fifth books as some of those events happen concurrently to events taking place in "A Storm of Swords." In the wake of the Red Wedding, how does the North pick up the pieces and with their greatest enemy seemingly crushed, where does that leave the Lannisters. Daenerys Targaryen now has an army but is she ready to take back her homeland. Does Jon Snow turn south to seek revenge or remember his duty along the Wall?"

@Intruder
I don't see House Targaryen uniting with Starks anytime soon.

SPOILERS (FOR THOSE THAT HAVEN'T FINISHED WATCHING ALL THE EPISODES YET)!!!
Not only are Queen Dany and the northern forces seperated by the south and all the southern lords (including Lannister and Tyrell), but the Starks' ancestors were made to kneel before Queen Dany's ancestors. Why would the north trust Dany to let them keep the north and not subjugate them with her dragons?

Oh also House Stark is pretty much dead. Robb is dead. His heir is dead. His father is dead. His wife is dead. His mother is dead. His sisters are scattered. Jon Snow has given up all titles. Bran and Rickon are missing and headed for deep north.

You can't be a rightful heir once you take the black. Snow gave up that right several seasons ago. House Stark, to the knowledge of the citizens of Westeros at least, right now has no male heirs. Sansa is the key and the north don't have her.

Jon is in the middle of a bigger war with those gorgeous whitewalker folk. He's not gonna abandon his brothers for a title he never coveted. Bran and Rickon are wildcards, I'll admit. Arya though has had so many close calls with being found that now I don't think she'll ever be found and taken home. That's just GRR Martin screwing with us in my opinion lol.

And there is no proof that Snow is half anything. That's a theory from the forums. A pretty spoilery one too. And Jon is, as the show has established, most like his father of all the stark boys. He would take his oath pretty seriously.

It a Stark, Lannister or Targyren ends up on the throne then I will disappointed. It would seem so cliche. For all the blood I need it to be a different House. I don't want a silly happy ending for the Houses. A happy ending for the people with a good leader would be fine though.

Only person I want to see on the throne is Dany. [frick] the Starks. They are all pretty unlikable minus Arya.

Wow, this is the most civil I've ever seen intruder act. I've rarely seen this side before, maybe we should talk more about Game of Thrones in all of CBM's articles haha.

I'm in the same boat as intruder though, never read the books...yet. I want to start but I wonder if it'll ruin my experience watching the series at the same time.

@ElBicho

I've actually read the books 4 times. Currently reading a fifth go. I just choose to disregard the book and focus on the show. And Mama Stark ain't doing jack in her condition. At least not where restoring Stark power is concerned.

@blackandyellow I don't think they plan to end it after Season 7. I'm pretty sure that interview was just an HBO executive giving an estimation. D&D plan on having 8 or 9 seasons, depending on the size of the last two books
