On last night's episode of Game of Thrones, "Stormborn", a character we haven't seen since early in season 1 made a surprising return: Nymeria, Arya's long-lost direwolf.

The youngest Stark girl encountered her old friend while stopping to make camp on her way back to Winterfell, and although the beast did recognize her former companion, she chose not to accompany Arya on her journey home and loped away with her pack. As Nymeria departed, Arya was heard to say, "no, that's not you", which understandably led to some confusion.

The line was actually a callback from a moment in season 1 in which Arya tells her father that she's destined for a very different life than the one he has envisioned for her. An initially heartbroken Arya recognizes that the wolf has also made a new life for herself and can no longer be a part of her human counterpart's journey.

HBO has now officially released the scene in its entirely. Check it out below, and be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

I get the feeling Nymeria will save Arya, before this show ends.

Such a heart breaking scene. They both knew they had out grown the other.

Nymeria has really grown. She's huge now

I liked the symbolism of that scene. Arya and Nymeria have both grown and changed so much that they don't need each other anymore.

Great episode, though it made me quite sad

@BlindWedjat - 2nd week in a row I've been eating and ended up wretching while watching. The switch from jorah to pie was funny though.

@MitchConner - I like jorah, Sam can stay in the citadel cleaning up old man's sh#t for all I care though.

How does a cable show like Game of Thrones command that much attention? I don't even understand the financing of the show. There are no commercials (and certainly no product placement); it does not charge for tickets and the cable subscription revenues are diluted over a number of shows so it does not have the benefit financial backing outside of a studio. Yet...it is an event that is supported by a huge budget and a stellar cast!
