I went to see Game of Thrones in IMAX last night and it was awesome! When they announced a few weeks ago that they were going to do this they already had me at "hello."
It took me a while to become really into Game Of Thrones. I wasn't into Rome on HBO when it was on and at first Thrones looked a little like that. I was especially turned off when the creator, George R.R. Martin, openly dissed Lost and said he hopes GoT will not have that type of ending. Lost is my favorite series of all time and while I know that ending didn't satisfy many it still had many fans that just weren't as vocal about the ending. I'll save my venting about that for another article. Anyway, I had to re-watch GoT first season about 3 times to really get into it and of course the shocker in the first season, I won't spoil it here, pretty much woke me up too how good the show could be. At that point it still wasn't enough for me because it was still kind of hard to follow with it's many story lines. By the time the 4th season came up and an event in that season turned the tables on things I was fully on board. After the season was done I then went back to watch all the episodes over again from the beginning to catch the things I missed and just like Lost I began to realize that the many story threads were a slow slow build to what will hopefully be an ultimate payoff in the end. Seeing those episodes from the end of season 4 in IMAX were thrilling because the sound was great and the show lends itself greatly to the movie format. I think the thing that has me really amped about the future of the series is that at some point it will fully embrace it's fantasy elements once "winter" does come. That would look awesome in IMAX!
The other great thing in seeing it in IMAX was that I got to see it with my peoples! Fellow fanboys and fangirls all in one theater watching a repeat of their favorite show on the big screen. It was awesome! I mean just how krayze do you have to be to pay to watch a TV show in a theater?? There were fanboy conversations that you may not get to have all the time if you're at home just tweeting and posting on FB while watching the show and nobody is looking at you weird like "why are you excited and paying $15 to watch something that HBO already has at home for you waiting on on Demand? It it worth it?? " At my showing they even clapped after each episode to show their appreciation of the event! It was great. You can't value that enough among people who are willing to sit down and pay for that experience. I can really imagine this show ending with a big screen treatment although i hear HBO doesn't want to go that route.
I hope HBO and other shows(that lend themselves to this format) consider doing more special events like these because the experience was definite in my ballpark. Maybe we can get Marvel to premiere a couple episodes of one it's Netflix shows in IMAX. Just sayin...
