The Next GAME OF THRONES Season Will Only Be 7 Episodes?

Season 7 of HBO's Game of Thrones might consist of only...7 episodes according to a season 6 director. With the show already passing the books, are we closer to the end of the show than we realize?

It looks like those rumors of HBO shortening future Game of Thrones seasons are true.  Jack Bender, who directed “The Door” and “Blood of My Blood,” stated that he's unsure if he'll direct an episode of the fantasy drama next season because there will be less opportunities.  "I don’t know the answer to that," said Bender when asked by Vanity Fair about a possible return.  "They’re only doing seven [episodes], and they’ve got their regulars who have done it forever."

With season 6, HBO has officially passed author George R.R. Martin as the latter was unable to finish the sixth volume  The Winds of Winter before the current season's premiere.  Martin supplied showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are operating with notes from GRRM but a good majority of the remaining storylines will be created in the show's writer's room.

To date, Martin has stated that his Song of Ice and Fire fantasy series will consist of 7 volumes, with the last installment, A Dream of Spring following The Winds of Winter.  However, there are already rumblings that there could be an 8th installment.  It certainly wouldn't be without precedent as Martin originally conceived A Song of Ice Fire as a trilogy, before expanding to 4 books, then 6 and now 7.

Benders two episodes are the best of the season. Not sure if it's the directing so much as the writing, though.

they each better be an extra 20-30 minutes longer then. 10 episodes already feels like too little.

D and D mentioned this at the beginning of the season. They said after this season there would only be 13 episodes left. I guess they are splitting those 13 episodes into two seasons instead of having one long season.

@Kman - nah, season 8 is said to get 6 episodes I bet the budget per season stays more or less the same if not higher and then doing fewer episodes.... It's going to look ridiculawesome

Yes. Good. That show is a mess and less episodes mean less of my time over analyzing their plot holes.

With the speed of events in this season, the series likely only needs 7 additional episodes to wrap things up. I mean come on, think about all that has been accomplished this season alone. Main/secondary characters that have been part of several seasons being killed off/brought back just to be killed off. Westeros has a teleportation device that allows Little Finger to go from the Vale to the Wall as well as Jamie going from Kings Landing to Riverrun in the matter of an episode. You have Theon and Yara traveling to what is believed to be Valyria in a matter of two episodes. I mean at this pace I wouldn't be surprised if Cersie, Tommen, Kevin Lannister, Ramsey and other main characters get killed off by the end of the season. In case people haven't figured it out yet, the series is wrapping up and what once was a show where significant 7-8 storylines were going on at once, it has been reduced essentially to four story lines this season: The White Walker Threat, Sparrows vs Lannisters, The Battle for the North, and Tying up Loose Ends (Underwhelming Dorne/Iron Born, Arya leaving Braavos Sam and Gilly trying to be useful, and Dany's army eventually doing something productive. By the end of the season, The Iron Born and their 1,000 ships will either be revealed or be sailing on the way to Mereen, The Tyrells will completely control the Iron Throne with Olenna being named Hand of the King, Bran will be reunited with Jon, Sansa and Rickon, Arya will be on her way back to Westeros possibly with a number of faces from the hall, and maybe they all will finally form a game plan on how to kill the White Walkers.

@BlackHulk - So, you think the next season is the last one? Honestly i'm not prepared for that! xD I mean, i want to see the epic climax and conclusion of this show, but, hell! i need another two seasons at least.
