Could WWE Superstar John Cena Be Up For The Role Of Dr. Manhattan In HBO's WATCHMEN TV Series?

John Cena is in the process of making the transition from wrestling to Hollywood and now some cryptic social media posts from the WWE Superstar have fans wondering if he might be heading to HBO's Watchmen.

Zack Snyder's Watchmen is widely considered a masterpiece among comic book fans but an HBO series fleshing that world out is undeniably exciting. It seems to still be very early days for the project but could producers have already started looking at casting some of the key roles? Well, that's what many people believe after John Cena shared a couple of very interesting Instagram posts this past week.

Cena is still active within WWE but is clearly making an effort to become the next Dwayne Johnson with starring (and well-received) roles in the likes of Daddy's Home 2 and Trainwreck. He'll also be the lead star of upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, easily his biggest Hollywood role to date. 

So, could he play Dr. Manhattan on the small screen? That would certainly be an unexpected piece of casting on HBO's part and Cena would obviously have to be comfortable stripping off for the role in what will likely be an R-Rated drama. It's feasible he could have landed the role or at least met for it and just as likely that he's a fan and is messing with us. It seems, for now, we'll have to wait and see...

Could just be campaigning... but this would actually be a very interesting choice. He's a pretty good actor.

@RorMachine - I guess for a wrestler. But Dr. Manhattan really requires a pretty high acting ability. Almost Shakespearean. Cena just can't pull that off.

@RorMachine - The Marine and 12 Rounds are fun lazy Sunday afternoon action movies to catch on FX but I wouldn't go that far to say he could play Dr. Manhattan.

@RorMachine - Ummm...unless they’re going towards making this a comedy, I can’t imagine him being any good in this role. I mean, are you judging his acting off of his wrestling career? I sure hope not 😅😳😬

@GhostSurfer - Totally agree. Look at Steve Carell and Jim Carrey, both great all around actors, just to name a few. But Cena’s been acting since like 2005 or something which includes his B movies like that Marine one and other straight to VHS home video crap. I just think it’s pretty obvious he’s one dimensional. I didn’t like the fact he was considered for Shazam but I think he’d be more suited for that than this.

@Origame - Haha I was thinking the same thing when I read that comment. Pretty sure HBO has given us some great series with some fantastic actors. Sopranos, the Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Deadwood, and then some. The more I think about that comment, the more I’m baffled by it ha.

Doctor Manhattan is one of the hardest to characters to bring to screen and for an actor is must be really intimidating to take on the role.

Billy Crudup did amazing and I think he was the best thing in Watchmen. Honestly, I think he should have received much more recognition for his work.

John Cena is a better actor than people give him credit for. He is nowhere near good enough to carry this role though.

@UltimateCarnage - Sorry I am going to have to disagree with you Jackie Earl Hayley was the best part about Watchmen because he was basically Rorschach come to life. Like Alan Moore used his dark magic to bring Rorschach from the comic book to our world. Billy Crudup was a strong second but he just couldn't match Hayley's performance.

@DillonEnnis - Yup. Totally seems that way. I hope that continues because to be honest whenever I see actors campaigning for a comic book role, most of the time I think it’d be a bad pick. But that’s just my opinion. Like I hope Tyrese Gibson never gets a chance to play John Stewart because, just no. No thank you. Please stop campaigning for it. Every time I’d see an article about him wanting that role I’d cringe.

I won't jump to conclusions, personally i doubt it but...this helps me lower my expectations when it comes to the cast.

For some characters...in NO way they can do a better job than what we got with Snyder's movie.
Especially when it comes to Walter and Jon.
So i have to ready myself! :P

At least whoever they cast for Silk Spectre, odds are she will be a better actor than Malin Akerman haha
