Latino Review broke news. Here's what a fan of their site said about the screening he saw last night in Los Angeles.

“I have to say Snyder knocked this one out of the park. There is some gruesome, brutal stuff here that is hard to watch. The fight scenes are awesome, and, like in 300, Snyder continues the use of ramping the frame rate to accentuate the movements of the characters. I knew there was going to be some slo-mo, but I didn’t think he overdid it. All in all, fans of the book are going to more than pleased with the film. For a book that was for years considered un-filmable, he certainly managed to hit almost every beat and did not compromise any of the material (except for the squid).”

There were approximately 200 people at the screening.
1. No Black Freighter, although we do catch glimpses of the newsstand and the kid who reads the comic, but only briefly.
2. The ending is different, no squid. I was one of the people who never really cared about squid/no squid, but I feel the ending will work better for mainstream audiences that have never read the book.
3. They do not imply a sequel anymore than the book does…
4. The montage covering the heroes of the past is done exceptionally well, and was longer than I expected. Allows the audience to understand that this is an alternate version of the past and everything they know should be thrown out the window.
5. It is dark, but not the stark realism that fills the Dark Knight. The Watchmen reality is a little more surreal in its feel, like a dream. It really has the feel of the comic in it.
6. Look for the cameo by Snyder’s son. He also played young Leonidas in 300.
7. It was fantastically close to the book; even the framings of shots were lifted directly from the book.
8. Jackie Earl Halley is the shit in this. He IS Rorschach.
9. This movie is gory. I’m a gore hound and I was surprised at how graphic some scenes were. Really had people squirming.
10. NAKED Sally Jupiter. (CORRECTION NAKED Silk Spectre)
11. Only character I didn’t like was Veidt/Ozymandias. I thought the actor was weak.

NAKED SILK SPECTRE!!!! :D

i love it already ;)

but humor aside, it does sound very exciting. It all sounds very good to me. Except for Ozzy...if he isn't that good in the movie, does this mean that even if the rest of the cast does stellar, the movie will fail...I mean, c'mon Ozymandias is one MAJOR part...hopefully it won't ruin the overall experience of the movie, but judging by this review, it doesn't, which is good ^_^

He does PLAY a major part, but hes not (or shouldnt be) in nearly as many scenes as the others

Will judge when I see it. The review just says no squid, doesn't say anything regarding the explanations needed to make the whole story plausible.
xaosjerk
xaosjerk - 2/12/2009, 5:53 PM
This all lines up with how I've been anticipating the movie, the story stuff is emphasized, it's very adult, I kind of figured ozy was going to be a little weak (they really should have gotten a beefcake actor, ozy wasn't thin like that guy, but overall it's amazing.
Betty
Betty - 2/12/2009, 6:05 PM
I'm pretty sure you are supposed to naturally dislike ozy. Movies have to be superliminal rather than sub.

Davez forgot about password thing. doh!

This movie is going to kick ass, I know that there are people that are all freaked out that there is no squid, but honestly the squid was not the only way to end the book and a mainstream audience is not going to take to that as well as fan boys so I kind of agree with changing the ending, I just hope they didn't do something stupid in the end.

I wonder what the scene is that sally is naked? I don't remember a scene in the novel that this happened. Hmmmm.
NoobMike
NoobMike - 2/12/2009, 6:31 PM
probably when she's changing her costume, the comedian is spying her and we get to see her naked, then mid changing she gets raped.
xaosjerk
xaosjerk - 2/12/2009, 6:44 PM
I think she's naked in one or two spots in the novel
NoobMike
NoobMike - 2/12/2009, 7:09 PM
Laurie is naked when she sleeps with Doc and when she sleeps with Dan, although it says naked Sally Jupiter, so it will probably be before she gets raped.

Carla Gugino is hot ^_^ i had a crush on her as a kid when i saw her in that Pauly Shore movie Son In Law, then i totally forgot about her until Spy Kids came out...i've been waiting for her to have a naked scene for a LONG time. lol.

What cracks me up is I've been following this for months now and watching every Watchmen update article be met with spewing bile and venom. No WAY could this be good! you all said.

Now it's funny to watch people praise it and say I told y'all it was gonna be good all along!

Y'all are Ledgerites.

Ledgerite - n. - A person who talks shit about a director or studio's choice in the development of a movie, doomsaying it, then reverses gears when the choice turns out to be AMAZING and makes the movie AWESOME.
Example: "No way could Heath Ledger possibly top Nicholson. Jack WAS the Joker! Who the [frick] is Heath Ledger?" followed shortly by "Oh, man, this was the greatest performance in the history of performances. Heath Ledger should get the Oscar for greatest actor who ever lived!!!!"
Set2Fallfirst
Set2Fallfirst - 2/13/2009, 1:24 AM
Oddfellow you actually have a point that has happened. When i found out a yr and a half before the dark knight came out that ledger was gonna be The Joker i was stoked. He is and always has been one of my favorite actors cuz i loved 10 things i hate about you the same goes for christian bale so my two favorite actors playing my 2 favorite comic book personas is awesome. When i told ppl at my job (blockbuster) ledger was gonna be the joker no one believed he would do good but me and a couple of my comic book customers who loved cinema. Then when pics came out ppl totally kept saying eh it looks ok but i doubt hell do good first trailer comes out everyone freaks at how awesome it seems. I was so pissed cuz for a full yr and a half 2 yrs i kept getting crap about how ive been wrong and how ledger wasnt gonna do it and then they turned into hypocrites about it. same with watchmen i thought wow awesome movie itll be cool then everyone teared it down even when the trailers poped up ppl kept saying OMG its gonna suck now some one whos seen it besides kevin smith views it and ppl are like omg ITS AWESOME not everyone here but i get what youre talking about LAME.

Geeze dude, been drinking the haterade much?

I don't really see anyone who has commented in this post that has been adamant about dissin' the movie. The only one that I see that might have come close is NoobMike, and all he's done is say he doesn't like trailers, effects, etc, he's not really said yea or nea on the movie itself.

No offense, but it really looks like you just wanted a reason to post your little web term.

Just send it to Urban Dictionary and be done with it man.
realfirstavenger
realfirstavenger - 2/13/2009, 6:01 AM
ahaha falcon you are a great man
and i agree, most people have been saying how excited they are from the beginning
and please never make Heath Ledger into some homosexual term that you came up with in your moms basement to sound smart (no offence)

comicb00kguy
comicb00kguy - 2/13/2009, 6:25 AM
Oddfellow, that's an amusing term. It needs a little refinement, imo, but it works. There should be a second definition of it, or perhaps another word, for the little posers who act like one of these comic movies, especially TDK, was the reason that God gave us the motion picture and who react with hysterical and vitriolic hatred towards anyone who dares to question anything about it or dares to voice an opinion that in even the slightest degree differs with theirs. They need to grow up and realize that different people have different opinions of things, and that adults can handle a little constructive criticism of something they enjoy.

As for the Watchmen review that is the original focus of this thread, it sounds encouraging. It certainly looks like Snyder is trying to do the best he can to remain faithful to the source material, given the time parameters of a film. We're not far away from finally seeing for ourselves. I'll be glad to be over the endless hype and speculation that has surrounded this film from its inception and to finally be able to see it and judge it myself.
comicb00kguy
comicb00kguy - 2/13/2009, 6:31 AM
I feel that I must add that while I am one of those people who is unhappy they've changed the ending of the Watchmen, I'm planning to go see the film with an open mind and see if what Snyder does instead for the ending works just as well.

lol, FalconX2 yes I am still wary of the movie, although I've come a long way and have managed to accept that it will not be full of reality as I had hoped it would be, rather it will be filled with slo-mo and camera filters (as Snyder's style is, and I still hate him with all my heart, I mean I haven't seen him talk anymore and that's fine with me) , so far I can accept that, just as I can accept the fact that Veidt will not have any kind of stage presence as I think he should, and that doc. manhattan still has his skin condition. For me everything comes down to, the fact that they changed the ending and even though some people say it works much better for mass appeal, I think it doesn't (yet) as I have said so many times before, it all comes down to the explanations needed for all the subplots that link to the squid.
