Could AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Return? Marvel Studios' Brad Winderbaum Weighs In

We've been hearing rumors about the possibility of certain characters from the now defunct Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showing up in the MCU, and Marvel's Brad Winderbaum has now weighed in...

When Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted on ABC back in 2013, it was clearly supposed to be set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but as the show progressed, the divide between the big-screen franchise and Marvel Television deepened and the series pretty much became its own thing.

Even so, rumors have persisted that at least some Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. characters (Chloe Bennet's Quake and Ming Na-Wen's Melinda May seem like the most popular possibilities) could show up in the MCU, and with the likes of Netflix's Daredevil and X-Men: The Animated Series getting new leases of life, there's speculation that more AOS could follow at some point.

Marvel's Head of Television, Animation, and Streaming Brad Winderbaum was asked about a potential revival during an interview with Agents of Fandom, and while he did sidestep the question somewhat, it sounds like there is a chance it could happen.

“We’re doing that right now. We’re in production on Daredevil: Born Again in New York, they’re shooting as we speak — I’m seeing text messages come up from set. That’s probably the next show that is going to kind of revisit and revive a really strong, and one of my favorite pockets of our universe and our fandom. And… you never know, is the answer!”

If AOS does return in some capacity, we can't see it being a full-on revival featuring all of the main players. But if there are plans to reintroduce any of the characters, the Multiverse-spanning events of the upcoming Avengers movies would seem like the ideal opportunity.

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is an American television series created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen for ABC based on the Marvel Comics organization S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division), a peacekeeping and spy agency in a world of superheroes. The series was the first to be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and it acknowledges the continuity of the franchise's films and other television series. It was produced by ABC Studios, Marvel Television, and Mutant Enemy Productions, with Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, and Jeffrey Bell serving as showrunners.

The series stars Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, reprising his role from the film series, alongside Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, and Elizabeth Henstridge. Nick Blood, Adrianne Palicki, Henry Simmons, Luke Mitchell, John Hannah, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, and Jeff Ward joined in later seasons. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents deal with various unusual cases and enemies, including Hydra, Inhumans, Life Model Decoys, alien species such as the Kree and Chronicoms, and time travel. Several episodes directly cross over with MCU films or other television series, notably Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), which significantly affected the series in its first season, and Agent Carter (2015–16), from which series regular Enver Gjokaj joined the cast for the seventh season. In addition to Gregg, other actors from throughout the MCU also appear in guest roles."

Those characters could show up as part of SWORD (in Dark Reign and Siege adaptations) for example, but I don't think AoS doesn't need a revival though. It ended on a really good note.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I honestly wouldn't mind it if they bring back Luna's Robbie as the Ghost Rider in the Sacred Timeline. Probably my favorite arc in the show

Just use some of the cast in other MCU projects (like Daisy/Quake).

Oh! This is the show that was set in the MCU, showing events of Winter Soldier and Sokovia, Nick Fury making cameos (or the likes of Lady Sif), BUT actually not MCU canon?
LOL! What a mess!

Apophis71 - 3/17/2024, 3:48 PM
@CharlesLeeRay - It irrefutably DID start out as fully canon and interconnected to the MCU, being retconned not to ever have been wouldn't negate that even if never referenced anywhere again. As to if/when it drifted to no longer being canon to the main timeline is a whole other debate, even then would still be canon to the Marvel multiverse as everything is and can crossover as No Way Home proved, but first few season at least were canon even if plans changed and thus no longer considered so.

It also remains the second highest rated Marvel TV show, behind (which I know many will dispute) Ms. Marvel and above (again open to dispute) Netflix's Daredevil so shouldn't come as a surprise if it does come back and be made at least loose canon or drifted onto a branch MCU timeline a crossover back onto the main timeline again. Suspect however more likely if at all only a few live action characters will turn up at points in other shows or films, not a full new season devoted to Agents of Shield in live action.

@CharlesLeeRay - I'm perfectly happy with the explanation that AoS diverged from the mainline MCU continuity when the started getting into time travel in Season 5.

@ClintThaHamster - Why would you think the time travel in S5 would have screweed with MCU continuity ? It was just a time loop that got pruned. S6 otoh does not work at all.

@JDL - Sorry, I honestly can't recall what specifically happened and each season, I'm an old man and my memory is shit. I'm just saying that an explanation is there if they want it.

It would be a smart move on their part to bring back the show, or at least characters from, the best Marvel MCU outing to date. Loki is the best of the D+ shows so far, but nothing has yet touched the greatness of SHIELD or Daredevil.

Sure why not? The quality of Disney's MCU has dropped so badly over the recent years that I already consider Agent of sh1t as canon. User Comment Image

It would be cool if we got the likes of Mack , Daisy , Yo-Yo and even Sousa back since they were still actively in the field by the end of the show in Secret Wars and maybe even the quasi-rebooted MCU (if they do that).

However , I personally don’t need a revival anymore because the show ended well and on its own terms so just leave it be (I would rather do that for shows that were cancelled).

Do leave FitzSimmons alone though , they have been through enough and deserve their happy ending.

@TheVisionary25 - exactly. The only characters I wanna see return are Diasy, Mack, Sousa, Deke and Yo-yo. The others got great closure

@TheVisionary25 - I would never be averse to FitzSimmons having an appearance somewhere as consultants, just don't kill them and make it a one off deal as like you say they had the perfect happy ending. Actualy would never be against them back period but get the leave it at the happy ending POV, lol.

However Fitz made that timeline jumping tech as well as time travel tech, that alone could be a reason they are consulted if timeline hopping is needed to help create a multiverse Avengers group or to try and save some from their branch timeline when the multiverse starts imploding or to help return heroes to their own timelines/era's once the multiverse is rebooted after Secret Wars.

Marvel is straight up starting to feel like late 90’s-early 2000’s era Fox. The only thing that would save them at this point would be if they take advantage of the multiverse and reveal that Phases 4 and 5 are the all part of th new branch timeline Steve created when he went back to be with Peggy at the end of Endgame.

Just have him pull the ultimate “my bad” and go back and fix everything. I am getting dangerously close to giving up on the MCU.

@BruceWayng - "Marvel is straight up starting to feel like late 90’s-early 2000’s era Fox"??????......x-men, X2: X-Men United? the phuck you on about? they were good movies. At least they felt like films and not just an advertisment for the next Disney product.

I've been saying it, bring back MAOS. Likeable and good actors across-the-board, diverse without the agenda-infused BS, and the scripts (certainly the last few years) were excellent.

@TheManWithoutFear - Ward was great but best seasons overall for me were Seven and Four (season three close third) so AoS without him being a main team member or main antagonist can and did work.
