Is Marvel Studios Setting Up The Kingpin To Be The Thanos Of The Street-Level MCU?

Is the street-level portion of the MCU looking to recreate the multi-year Thanos saga all over again...only with the Kingpin as the big bad?

Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin is a big part of the Echo limited series from Marvel Studios and it sounds as if the events of the first Marvel Spotlight offering sets the stage for Fisk's growing role in the MCU, moving forward.

Of course, after appearing in the Hawkeye Disney+ series, Fisk returns in Echo before squaring off with Man Without Fear in Daredevil: Born Again.

There's a growing theory among Marvel Fans that the MCU is looking to retread The Defenders storyline/universe that was previously depicted by Netflix and that the connective tissues across the various NYC street-level Marvel shows will be Fisk.

Interestingly enough, there are no MCU television shows announced for Phase 6 of the MCU, as of this date. Currently, Phase 6 is set to begin on May 2, 2025 with Fantastic Four and conclude with Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027. That's a two-year period that would be perfect for introducing (or maybe re-introducing) a few of Marvel's Defenders.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Echo executive producer Brad Winderbaum had an interesting response to the interviewer's comments that the Echo miniseries makes it feel like Wilson Fisk is being setup as the Thanos of the street-level corner of the MCU.

"You kind of hit the nail on the head," said Winderbaum. He continued, "And I can't say too much, only that as a chapter of Wilson Fisk's life, this is a crucial one and sets the stage, in some remarkable ways for what's coming next."

All five episodes of Marvel's Echo will arrive on January 9 at 6PM PST on Disney+ and Hulu.

Echo stars Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez / Echo,  D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Tantoo Cardinal as Chula, Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez, Chaske Spencer as Henry, Devery Jacobs as Bonnie and Graham Greene as Skully. Additionally, Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock / Daredevil makes a guest appearance.

Marion Dayre (Better Call Saul) created the series and serves as head writer alongside Amy Rardin (The Carrie Diaries, Charmed).  Sydney Freeland (Deidra & Laney Rob a Train) directed the first episode and served as head director of the series.

Echo Official Synopsis
Streaming exclusively on Disney, the origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.

Was just talking about how Echo is a pretty good vehicle for Kingpin's story. Sony and DC have done well doing the villain centric films, but that hasn't been Marvel's approach, so she's a pretty solid character to flesh out his story.

@Itwasme - Also a great work around for the legal issues as Sony cannot prevent Kingpin (who they hold the bulk of the rights over) from appearing fully in a story about Echo (that they don't) as it is one of the exemption clauses in the deals. They could however get in the way of Kingpin appearing in a series or film of a LOT of their other major IP's currently in use (other than with DD too obviously). Heck they even played safe with Hawkeye which would likely have been a grey area in the legal docs by having Echo's entire origin story in it and keeping Kingpins appearance minimal.

MCU needs to stop killing off villains at the end of movies/"sagas." Think of villains like heroes, keep them around for as long as you should. Kingpin should be in the MCU forever, but so should Doom, Galactus, and Magneto. Don't [frick] this up, Feige.
RedFury
RedFury - 1/3/2024, 4:37 PM
@ClintThaHamster - couldn't agree more! I've always thought of killing characters as an easy way out when it comes to writing. It's far more interesting when these characters exist in the background with the possibility of resurfacing one day. Abomination is a good example of that.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 1/3/2024, 4:37 PM
@ClintThaHamster - Completely agree. Part of the fun of reading comics is the possibility of any number of villains showing up again in different ways. If it's a good villain, the audience should want to see them as much as they want to see the hero (maybe an exaggeration, but you get what I mean).

I do understand not wanting to repeat yourself in the movies, but having so many 1-off villains isn't a solution. You just gotta give your recurring villain a new angle.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/3/2024, 5:04 PM
@ClintThaHamster - To some extent it does depends on the villain but generaly agree they should do the death of the villain sparingly. That said they have kept major villains alive a fair amount more than most oft realise and doing so during a multiverse arc where a Variant appearing later is always possible it is less of a problem (as long as not done too oft).

Galactus should never be killed period ever as technicaly according to the source shouldn't be possible and generaly agree Doom and Magneto are ones never to kill off. Loki returning from the dead a lot in the source always made that specific one less of a problem and are others like him such as Kang that have defying death written into their source canon.

@SheepishOne - Scarecrow while he definitely had potential for a bit more was a good example in the Dark Knight trilogy. His role gradually decreased but it was always a joy to see him still out there.

Considering Thanos snapped away half the universe, I’d say Thanos is the Thanos of the street-level MCU.

supermanrex
supermanrex - 1/3/2024, 4:39 PM
all they have to do is make the stakes big enough in the context of ground level story telling that they leave the viewer with the same level of importance and oomph to his stories that Thanos received. yeah thanos took out half of existence but if done right Kingpin stories could leave the viewers with the same feeling.
Itwasme
Itwasme - 1/3/2024, 4:55 PM
@supermanrex - I'm hoping they avoid end of the world stakes in this. I think the more personal they make the stakes to their main chatlracter the better. Unpopular opinion, but this is why I prefer Civil War to The Winter Soldier. The ending of TWS was unnecessary and even took away from the heart of what made the rest of the movie work so well - IMO at least.
supermanrex
supermanrex - 1/3/2024, 5:00 PM
@Itwasme - no no end of world stakes needed literally. it just needs to feel like the end of the world for the characters or the stakes come off as a whiff and no edge of your seat drama is happening. Kingpin can feel like a Thanos or Dr. Doom in the stakes and context of street level without the literal world wide threat being visited.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/3/2024, 5:00 PM
@Itwasme - I do still like the TWS ending a lot, and I feel it has only become more realistic as society only becomes more controlled, digitized and algorithmically driven.

But yeah, Civil War had great stakes. In the end, it was just a guy that lost his family trying to break apart the most important work relationship there was.

I'm guessing Echo will see him hustle his way back into the crime empire he lost, Daredevil will see him become mayor, and Spider-Man will see him being taken down.

And I definitely wanna see Spider-Man 4 be about Mayor Fisk outlawing vigilantes and putting Scorpion on the job to take them down, which leads to Spider-Man and Daredevil teaming up to defeat them.
