There are many characters Marvel Studios could build a Disney+ TV series around, but the decision to move forward with Echo led to many fans questioning why Maya Lopez was made a priority.
Alaqua Cox was undeniably fantastic in Hawkeye and we had fun spending time with the character; however, there was nothing in that series which suggested Echo needed to take centre stage in a solo adventure. That may go some way in explaining the apparent lack of excitement for the show.
It also explains the decision to release every episode simultaneously, with this approach suggesting there are concerns about maintaining interest in Echo on a weekly basis.
Yesterday, Disney held an earnings call and touted its "Key Upcoming Shows" across both Disney+ and Hulu. However, while the likes of Ahsoka and Loki season 2 were present, there was no mention of Echo.
It may be an oversight, a result of the show not being released until November, or an indication we're no longer getting the series this year.
There have long been rumblings about creative issues and there were rumblings in the past about the series becoming a "Special Presentation" instead of a full-blown TV series.
Disney CEO Bob Iger wants to get back to the studio's winning ways and releasing another MCU critical disappointment in 2023 after Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Secret Invasion is no doubt unfathomable to the executive right now. If so, we'd expect clarification about Echo's future to be revealed soon.
The origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez (Cox), whose ruthless behaviour in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.
As of now, all episodes of Echo are expected to premiere on Disney+ on November 29.
