The Falcon and The Winter Soldier may have primarily been about Sam Wilson's transformation into the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new Captain America, but it was also a crucial part of Bucky's journey. Still recovering from his time as a HYDRA assassin, Steve Rogers' oldest friend had to make amends for past actions before finally being able to move on with his life.

By the time the finale rolled around, Bucky had ticked those names off his list and put the Winter Soldier behind him (even if that final title card suggested otherwise). The question is, where does his story go next? Well, Captain America 4 writer Malcolm Spellman has shared his thoughts on that in a recent interview with The Playlist

"I think Bucky is free in a way," he mused. "Even coming out of Wakanda, he still wasn’t totally free. He was freed programming, but I believe Bucky is free now in a way. Look at the way he smiled at the end; he got a family, he’s invited to the cook-out, as we say in the community.

"He is free in a way that I think we haven’t seen, and that leads to a lot of possibilities for him."

As Spellman suggests, Bucky's story really can go pretty much anywhere now, especially as he's moved on from the trauma of being under HYDRA's control.

On the one hand, it seems pretty obvious that the hero will join Sam in the next Captain America movie (Sebastian Stan's chemistry with Anthony Mackie is too good not to revisit), but it would be pretty cool to see Marvel Studios do a little more with the White Wolf than keeping him in a sidekick role to whoever is wielding the shield.

Perhaps he could join whatever the MCU's version of the Thunderbolts ends up being?

@MyCoolYoung - I agree. He was great as a complete dumb rock in I, Tonya and then did great in portraying Bucky's mental state. Just wish they got him for Luke

@MyCoolYoung - His original contract was nine films. But that was before Disney+ was a thing, so the series may have counted as two or three films.

So, 3 films (the CA's), 2 films (Infinity War and Endgame), and whatever number they might be counting the series as (unless that was a separate contract agreement).

Whatever the numbers, I am very much looking forward to seeing a new and free Bucky having new adventures.

Kinda hoping to see him turning The Winter Soldier into a force for good now. And even if it's without the moniker, I hope Bucky's not done yet (and neither is Stan)

I'd love for him to get some story away from Captain America, whatever that is. Something about his ties to Wakanda, Russia, the thunderbolts... I still want to see more of Bucky and Sam relationship, but I hope that's not all we'll get.

That's a small step for Bucky and a giant leap towards a space adventure.

Interesting the only person that had even mentioned a Captain America 4 is this guy. I don’t think Marvel have so until then I consider this a a pure pipe dream of his.... having seen the mess of a show he created if it were me i think I’d just keep quiet and hope everyone forgets about it....

That last scene where he told Mr. Nakajima about murdering his son is criminally short. That scene needed to be as long and in-depth as Isaiah's story with Sam. Bucky's got one of the most tragic story in the MCU. I wanna know how he feels about his time as the HYDRA puppet-assassin, how he sees it now that he's free from it. It used to be this big demon that he was fighting, but now that he slew the beast, I thought this would have been the best moment to show how he really sees it.

They probably won't, but i'd like it if they kept the Winter Soldier name. Instead of letting go of it because of the dark past, Bucky should give that identity a new meaning. Kind of like the "winter" soldiers who, unlike the "summer" soldiers, keep fighting even when the battle gets harder. Fight to restore the mantle, despite the rough past.
