FALCON & THE WINTER SOLDIER Showrunner Says They Considered Having "Different People" Wield The Shield

Sam Wilson becoming Captain America always seemed like a foregone conclusion, but The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman has now revealed that someone else almost took up the mantle.

Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) becoming the new Captain America was set-up at the end of Avengers: Endgame, so it wasn't exactly a surprise to see him officially take up the mantle during the season finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Sam's journey was far from straightforward, though, and the second man to call himself Captain America after Steve Rogers actually turned out to be John Walker (Wyatt Russell). Now, showrunner Malcolm Spellman has revealed that discussions took place about having another character wield the shield.

“We entertained a lot of different stuff,” the writer tells Den of Geek. “I won’t get into what, but maybe different people were going to be holding the shield in other episodes. It fell by the wayside pretty quickly, because there was such poignancy to Sam’s journey that we very quickly did not have to clutter it with a bunch of plot and a bunch of tricks.”

Though he doesn't confirm as much here, we assume Spellman is referencing Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan).

The Winter Soldier was annoyed at Sam for giving up the shield, and there were hints that he was thinking about stepping up as the new Cap in his place. Chances are Sam was still going to end up as the new Sentinel of Liberty, of course, but it sounds like an intriguing subplot involving Bucky contemplating the possibility of continuing his old friend's legacy may have been dropped.

What do you guys make of Spellman's comments? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

Sam wielding the shield in the end was always destined to be, but I just wish we would've atleast gotten Marvel Studios' take on Bucky's Cap suit too

I think we got all we needed when Bucky picked up the shield after the Walker fight. You could see he thought about it for just a second, but knew he wasn't the right man to take it. He still had work to do on himself.

In fairness, if Marvel Studios were EVER going to make Bucky Cap, that would've been the best way to do it; have him step in reluctantly to take up the mantle after Sam decided against it, and then have him hand the shield over once Sam finally embraces the role.

Having said that, it would've drastically impacted the entire John Walker subplot, might've added more unnecessary tension between Bucky and Sam, and they'd have needed at least a couple of extra episodes just so it'd all fit without ruining the show's pacing.

@AC1 - Aside from the last episode, Walker was the perfect inclusion to the series. He made for a great antagonistic force while the series was slowly radicalizing Karli. Well I say slowly but she did blow up that building.

It's not a perfect series but it was a good idea in hindsight. That Walker vs Sam & Bucky fight is the highlight of the series.

@KelvTwelve - yeah I agree, I'd heard of US Agent before but didn't know anything about him apart from him being a kind of anti-hero version of Cap and never would've expected him to be in the MCU at this stage, but his inclusion really was the perfect way to explore Sam's journey and the idea of what Captain America even means without Steve Rogers while also setting up a new, interesting character.

A lot of people have handled that shield already.

I agree w/ the sentiment of others, the focus on the shield so much loses (just a bit) the character of Sam Wilson and why he has the character to be the new Cap.
