TFATWS Star Anthony Mackie Says He Hopes To Continue Playing Sam Wilson "For The Next Two Decades"

During a post MTV Movie Awards interview, TFATWS star Anthony Mackie was asked about his contract with Marvel Studios, and joked(?) that he hopes to continue playing Sam Wilson for the next 20 years...

It was a powerful moment we all anticipated, but Sam Wilson officially took up the mantle of Captain America in the season finale of Disney+'s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and will serve as the MCU's new Sentinel of Liberty moving forward.

We assume Wilson will be an integral part of this shared world for the foreseeable future, but that may all depend on how long Anthony Mackie is contracted to play the character for.

The actor was asked that very question during a post MTV Movie and TV Awards Q&A, and while he didn't give a specific answer, he did say that he hopes to remain under contract for the next two decades.

"So if I can be 65 and still doing this, I'm crushing it," he added.

Mackie is joking (although we'd have no problem with Old Man Falcon-Cap taking to the skies), of course, but it's nice to hear that he intends to stick around for a while - especially since he had some reservations about taking the MCU to the small screen at first.

"I was very skeptical and very surprised about the idea of a tv series," he said when asked if he anticipated the show's success. "I didn't think we would be able to translate onto television what we do on film, but I was blown away and surprised by how well they were able to keep the amazing scope of the film Marvel industry and take it onto Disney+."

Mackie's next appearance as Sam Wilson will most likely be in Captain America 4, although that project has yet to be officially announced by Marvel Studios.

All episodes of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier are now streaming on Disney+.

Go for it. If other actors had this same energy marvel characters would live forever.

@SonOfAGif - lol, a double entendre. I was actually playing on the idea that marvel characters never truly die in the comics but this works also.

Can't wait to see how they bring in Patriot. It'll most likely be in Cap 4. It'll give Sam someone to mentor, something we haven't really seen before yet for his character.

Torres too, but he can probably figure the hero gig on his own.

I think the movies, especially because people are attached to the actors playing the characters, have the potential for more character progression than in the comics, and for those changes to stick. So we can see a Sam Wilson that is no longer Captain America, but in 15 years is in a Nick Fury role or authority.

Who should be Sam's arch-enemy going forward? Sharon Carter? Baron Zemo? Or give him a rivalry with Captain Marvel?

@SonOfAGif - Yeah, I'm wondering if that's a slow burn with Sharon or just another skrull lying in wait.

The MCU could really have a special, deep character progression if the actors have this kind of enthusiasm for the roles.

Maybe not 20 years, but I can definitely see him sticking around until the next saga is wrapped up. So that's atleast another 10 years from now.

it does get me thinking how long the MCU will continue on, its unprecedented in film

I mean in the Iron Man to Avengers era, they were just trying to get the Avengers adapted in the right way and make a bit of a profit

With the success of Phase 2, it showed the MCU wasnt a short lived success and they could complete the Infinity Saga while also becoming a juggernaut of a franchise

the 2020s are proving the MCU is successful beyond the movies, so where does it end

I have always said that the 2020s could be used to complete the remaining solo trilogies & adapt the remaining filmworthy heroes

then the 2030s can be used to do the next generation of the MCU (Miles Morales, Cassie Lang etc), sort of soft reboot the MCU, where they could do another Iron Man/Thor/Cap etc trilogies but with new younger characters in the same canon

then 2040's they could go full on 2099 MCU...thats where my ideas end

Hope he continues the role for years to come.
