THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER Director Reveals Where We'll Next See Valentina Allegra De Fontaine

We were promised a major cameo in episode five of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and that ended up being Julia Louis Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The comic book version of the character has ties to S.H.I.E.L.D., HYDRA, and Leviathan, and while she's set John Walker up as U.S. Agent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we don't know what her endgame is.

In an interview with The Playlist, director Kari Skogland seemingly confirmed rumours that "Val" was supposed to make her big screen debut in Black Widow

"Cate [Shortland] and I talked back and forth about Valentina, here and there," she told the site.

Had we seen Black Widow before The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, chances are Val's return would have made more of an impact. Still, the same can now be said for the upcoming movie starring Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff. As that's set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, it's clear Fontaine has been plotting for a while.

In the same interview, Skogland opened up about seeing Anthony Mackie first arrive on set as Captain America.

"The whole place went silent," she revealed. "Just to see this iconic costume symbolizing this show we’re making and where we’re taking the world, not just the MCU but the fanbase at large, a Black man carrying the shield. And watching Anthony come on set, with his wonderful charm and humor, was a pinch-me moment for sure."

"It was always in this wheelhouse because [the comic version] looked great," Skogland said of the costume. "So, there was no need to change or fix what wasn’t broken. But the design team spent months with us working on it."

What do you guys think Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is up to in the MCU?

She was neither memorable nor funny. More cringey and that's coming from someone who has seen Seinfeld about 7 times through lol

I wonder where Kevin plans on plugging in The Thunderbolts.

@SonOfAGif - I just wish the MCU had more living villains, because I've always preferred the original-recipe Thunderbolts to the Suicide Squad-esque version. (Though I do admit connecting them with Ross does make the team name satisfying.)

Something about JLD just didn't sit well with me. The purple streak felt like it went over the line into cartoony. Also she's completely pointless in the story (which may be because we've gotten her out of order and she's operating like a Bizarro-Nick-Fury, granted).

Just not loving it. Also, I think I would have liked it better if she gave Walker the broken remnants of Steve's shield from the Endgame fight (because they should still be somewhere in this timeline) and had him loosely weld them together for a cracked shield. The steel one was sort of pointless.

@Spock0Clock - that broken shield idea is cool. Didn't think about that yet (for some reason I remember Steve stepping onto the time travel device with the shield, but I know that aint true)

@Spock0Clock - US Agent's shield in the comics isn't strong like Cap's either.

The title is wrong. Nothing came out about her next appearance. Only one that was not done.

I hope that when she shows up in Black Widow, she's just there to annoy Ross.

I personally liked the introduction of the JLD character and think it has great possibilities moving forward, especially in the hands of the Marvel brain-trust. Would really like to see her directly interact with Nick Fury since they have a bit of a complicated relationship in the comics.

She seems to be more like Victoria Hand from Dark Reing.

Probably putting together MCU version of suicide squad minus the head bombs.
