X-MEN Movies And TV Shows Won't Be Tied Together; Sentinels Confirmed For Matt Nix's Family Drama

Legion producer Lauren Shuler Donner sheds some light on how the big & small screen X-Men Universes will stand apart, while confirming that a new version of the Sentinels are coming to live-action!

IGN recently sat down with Lauren Shuler Donner for a lengthy chat about Legion, and she confirmed in the interview that the upcoming FX series will not take place in the same world as the X-Men movies. There's been a lot of confusion about whether or not that would be the case, but it was also thought that they probably were linked, albeit with Legion standing apart from the big screen stories.

Despite saying that the show will "touch on" David Haller's father (Professor Charles Xavier in the comic books), she added: "[We're] making it separate. We're our own world." Pushed for details on what that is when it was recently confirmed that Matt Nix's upcoming family drama is going to be set in the film universe, Donner dropped some intriguing details about what we should expect from that.

"Matt's is much more a part of just the world in terms of there are mutants, mutants are hated and there are Sentinels -- though very different from what we've seen before. You feel like you're here in the X-Men world. With Legion, we're our own universe. It gives Noah the freedom to do what he wants to do. Because we play with so many different timelines, and we rebooted and not really rebooted and all that, we felt like, OK, we're going to throw it out there and hope the fans accept it."

A new, present day version of the Sentinels should be pretty fun to see, though on a TV budget, it would suck if they're basically just robots disguised as humans or something similar! Time will tell, but Donner went on to explain how the movie and TV worlds will ultimately end up tying together.

"The cinematic universe will not worry about Legion. They will not worry about these TV worlds as all. They will just continue in the way that they have been continuing, and there is some great stuff that we are developing. I can just say it's going to be new and different, and yet Legion and our other show, we're not going to get in each other's way." So, no high profile X-Men cameos? "It depends. The feature side comes first, unfortunately, because it's established. They're our characters, so they come first, and as we decide feature world where we're going, there are certain characters we know we won't get into or if we do get into, it's OK to have them have an appearance." What do you think?

It's a shame, but I can't say I expected otherwise.

Is this really surprising? Each film is basically it's own pocket universe as well. Continuity is not exactly Fox's strong suit.

@MrDandy - Honestly people keep complaining about the continuity problems, but I just don't see it outside of stuff brought up in Last Stand and Origins. But in those cases, is it so bad that they're ignoring them?
StormXmen123
StormXmen123 - 1/17/2017, 4:02 AM
@Origame - Agreed. Origins adds to the contunity problems the most; I just choose to accept the 'emma frost' is just a random mutant as she isnt mentioned by name in the film. As for Last Stand the only continuity problem I can see is the opening scene with Xavier walking (but who is to say thats not a pshycic projection).

Otherwise all the other films maintain a coherant contiunity, besides small stuff like all the kitty cameos throughout the first triology.
And if we accpet them as contiunity issues, then explain to me why there is an Infinity Gauntlet full of gems in THOR?

Another problem people mention is the end of DOFP with wolverine and mystique. It has been 10 years between the two films. Clearly the real Stryker got Wolverine back + its clear Mystique and him have history by the she talks to him when imprisioned.

@StormXmen123 - one of them is a fake and probably play into infinity war
StormXmen123
StormXmen123 - 1/17/2017, 5:22 AM
@DjTheMarvelKid - Why would Odin keep a fake gauntlet in a vault of dangerous cosmic objects?

It must be real to some extent, but then why would he worry about keeping two Infinity stones in Asguard, but thinks its ok to keep the gauntlet and one of it power sources there.

Futhermore, it has all the gems present already embedded on it.

Again, I dont find it a big deal it was clearly an easter egg (at the time they probally didnt think they would be doing Infinity War). My point was that all these franchises have contiunity errors. Nothing is going to be perfect.

@Origame @StormXmen123 - It's not terrible, because I've enjoyed 6/9 of their films. It is a little disappointing though that they can't get their continuity in order. And there is a lot more than the stuff in Last Stand and Origins. Such as

-Emma Frosts age gap between First Class and Origins
-Havoc and Cyclopes are brothers despite Havoc being 20 YEARS older than him
-Professor X in First Class sees Storm and Cyclops in Cerebro causing their ages to not line up with Apocolypse
-Professor X and Mystique have no relationship in the first trilogy despite them being practically siblings in First Class
-Sabertooth doesn't recognize his own brother in the original X-Men
-Moria is 32 in the 1960's, doesn't age through the 80's and is still 38 in Last Stand, 50 YEARS later.
-Magneto claims to build Cerebro yet Beast ends up doing it in First Class
-In X-Men, Xavier claims he and Magneto met at 17, but in First Class they are early 30's.
-X-Men claims Cyclopes, Storm, and Jean to be his first students when Apocalypse and First Class show otherwise.
-Deadpools place in the timeline makes no sense
-Logan's place in the timeline as of now makes no sense
-At the end of Days of Future Past, Mystique disguised as Striker has Wolverine but in Apocalypse, Striker just has Wolverine
-Trask is a African American man in X2 but in Days of Future Past is a white man with dwarfism
-In The Wolverine Magneto and Xavier confront Wolverine for help...but for what? The Sentinels won't take over until the distant future, and how would they know that?
-How did Deadpool turn from his Origins version into the current version?
-X3 revolves around a revolutionary mutant cure...but Beast discovered that all the way back in the 70's.
-Apocalypse had Angel in the 1980's while Last Stand has him in 2007. How was he born earlier?
-Jubilee was apparently also born in two different times. Another 20 year difference.
-In The Wolverine, Logan has his adamanium claws removed, yet in Days of Future Past, the Adamantium is present in the future.
-Magneto, Mysique, and Xavier don't age between the 1960's and the 1980's
-Colossus turns from American in Last Stand to Russian in Deadpool

There are probably many many more I couldn't just think of off the top of my head.
Origame
Origame - 1/17/2017, 7:46 AM
@MrDandy - I already pointed out that the film makers, like many fans, didn't count Origins or Last stand. The rest of these are either effects from time travel or pretty minor issues that all movies have.

@StormXmen123 - maybe he hasn't an allaberate plan let this play out first
StormXmen123
StormXmen123 - 1/17/2017, 8:35 AM
@MrDandy - I agree there are contiunity errors. But many that you have stated be 'explained'

- The Emma Frost age gap. Yes that is a problem. But, beside promotional material, they never call the Orgins version Emma; thus I dont think you can calssify her as emma frost.

- The Stryker-Mystique-Wolverine situation. There is ten years between DoFP and Apocalypse. In that time Stryker could have got Logan back. Plus, in Apoc, he seems to know mystique more than his previous encounters (one were she beat him up and the other whe he was tazered).

- The African American Trask could have been Jimmy Trask or Thomas Trask or Raymond Trask.

-Logan got his claws back because Magento likely could have easily altered it postion on his skeleton to his claws.

- You never mentioned Xaviers sudden resurtection. But he clearly trasnferred his mind into the body in X3. I find it hard to beleieve thats his twin brother thats also paralysed. But we live in the world of multiple man; there could be a muatant that can create body for Xaviers mind. Or simply he projects an image of himself to ease the others.

- The Mystique and Xaiver not having history. By the time of the first Triology its been 40 years, Im pretty sure they will have said all that could be said. Its clear she is on Magnetos side, and willing to do anything to save mutant kind.

- Havok and Cyclops being 20 years apart. I have nieces and nephews that are older than me.

- Storm Cyclops Jean are his first combat students tah become the x-men

-I feel Deadpool is set in a different universe, all his jokes which refer to previous films break the 4th wall (hence non canon)

but assuming it is in the current universe. The it clearly the present as Twitter is used.
Plus after DoFP the timeline changed. Colossus is Russian because (A) His parents are russian and may have never emigrated to America or (B) they are american and emigrated Russia. In both cases he is Russian.

.

Again I must say a reboot after Logan would be great. It be sad to loose the new younger cast.

So I would say Fox straight out that they are having a hard reboot from a character/universe perspective everything is new.But allow current actors to reprise their roles (e.g. McAvoy as Prof X). Thus it is a new xavier with none of the history of the previous version, played by the same actor.

@StormXmen123 - some of our rebuttals don't hold up. the Alex and Scott especially doesn't hold up. Scott is the older brother. Havok and Cyclops are not related in the movies at all. Quicksilver is a twin of Wanda. not that little girl we see in the DOFP.

Scott, Jean, Storm he called them his first students. not his first combat students. his first students. which is complete bullshit, because Fox shit the bed with First Trash.

As for Origins, look up the casting and you will see that Tahyna MacManus was the one you played Kayla's Sister/Emma.

who has the same powerset as Emma Frost. Diamond form was Fox's way of telling us it was Emma.

However, The deadpool is accurate. Fox is clearly resetting Deadpool from the fact that DOFP reset the timeline on most things. However, i feel that they should have used weapon x to give him his powers
StormXmen123
StormXmen123 - 1/17/2017, 9:41 AM
@osideous - In the comics Scott may be the older brother but in the films its Havok. That does not affect the continuity of the film series.

As for Quicksilver-Wanda. No one has every stated that the little girl is Wanda. It heavily implided in the Rogue cut that Wanda does exist ("go up to your sister"). I would love to have Wanda in the X-men films, I really like the Avengers version, but it would be cool to see a different take on her. (But I think Fox and Disney have decied that the MCU has Wanda and X-men have quicksilver .)

I am aware she was inteded to be Emma Frost (a promo calls her it), but they never call Emma Frost in the film. Again many mutants can have similar powers. I must stress Im not denying that from a film point of view they created and marketed two Emma Frosts into the same universe. But from an in universe point of view there is real Emma Frost (First Class) and a girl who can turn to diamond.

@Origame - He pointed out that there were quite a few errors in First Class, Dofp, and Apocalypse too
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 1/18/2017, 9:24 AM
@Origame - First Class was one giant continuity error.

I understand that Days of Future Past reset the timeline, but what about First Class? That happened before the reset, so it should have been in line with the original 3 films, but it wasn't.

Also, the biggest issue with the newer series is that they keep setting these movies during different decades. We see Cyclops and Storm as litle kids, no more than 10 in First Class, which took place in the 60's. That means that Cyclops was in mid to late 40's in the original X-Men film lol.

And then we see him as a teenager in Apocalypse, which is 20 years AFTER First Class.

So many things were said in the original X-Men film, like Cyke and Storm being among the first X-Men, yet First Class clearly shows that wasn't the case.

Aside from Apocalypse, because its the ONLY film to happen AFTER the time flip, all the movies have had continuity issues mostly thanks to First Class.

And you can't use the time reset as an excuse because those things all happened BEFORE time flip. They happened prior to the reset happening. The original trilogy and First Class were the timeline before DoFP reset it.

At this point, after the Apocalypse suck-fest, Im ready for a reboot. I don't care if they go to Marvel or not because the X-Men have always been better off in their own corner of the MU. But they need rebooted and they need to be done justice.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 1/18/2017, 9:26 AM
@StormXmen123 - Origins didn't have continuity issues until First Class. First Class is what caused everything to have continuity issues because it didn't follow the previous films canon. It made things up that didn't fit.

If you want to blame a movie for the continuity issues, its First Class.
Origame

@JoJo1982 - I addressed that too. If you would read my comment.
Origame
Origame - 1/18/2017, 1:36 PM
@CorndogBurglar - You can't take things like Easter eggs and mild lines from the original film so seriously. With Easter eggs, it just isn't worth holding the future of these characters to a blink and you'll miss it moment early on. Same thing with the off handed message in the original film since that was written before they were even aware they would get a sequel out of it. And if you genuinely believe that that's still messed up continuity, I'll turn you towards the vault in the first Thor movie. Not only does it contain the Infinity Gauntlet, which was retconned as a fake but that's not all I have, but it also has the Eye of Agamoto from Dr. Strange, yet it makes no logical sense for it to be there given what we saw in Dr. Strange. All blockbuster franchises as long running as these will run into continuity issues. X-men isn't even all that bad all things considered.
