LOKI Head Writer Talks Classic Loki's Origin; Tom Hiddleston On "Terrifyingly Ambitious" President Loki

Today's episode of Loki was full of surprises, and getting to spend time with those Variants proved to be a total riot. We certainly fell in love with Alligator Loki (well, assuming he really is a Loki), but it's Richard E. Grant's "Classic Loki" everyone seems to be raving about after watching "Journey Into Mystery."

In an interview with Marvel.com, Loki Head Writer Michael Waldron described the character's introduction as a "thought experiment," revealing that his backstory came from a simple question: "What if Loki did in fact survive the events of Avengers: Infinity War?"

"And I thought, ‘Well, what if that did happen?’" he continued. "And if it did, in fact, how could he have aged up? How could he have lived out his years in a way that the TVA would never come find him?"

"It was that tragic thing where he finally realizes ‘I'm meant to be alone,’" he said of this Loki's decision to spend years in isolation. "It is just so sad. There's a real lesson there for our Loki in that he's going to reject that notion-- that this tiger can change his stripes, and he refuses to be alone. [Loki] wants to do the right thing. [He] wants to see if he can have real companionship in his life."

In the same interview, Tom Hiddleston shared his thoughts on getting the opportunity to play President Loki. While the Variant didn't have a lot of screentime, we did get to see what a fully villainous God of Mischief might look like, and for the actor, "that was quite surreal."

"President Loki is almost the worst of the bad bunch. It certainly felt this way; he's the least vulnerable, the most autocratic and terrifyingly ambitious character who seems to have no empathy or care for anyone else," the actor explains. "Doing them both in the same scene was slightly mad, but in an enjoyable way. And fun, too, because it was about leaning into Loki as a pure villain, or his capacity to be a pure villain."

Whether we'll see any more of these Loki Variants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains to be seen. For now, you can check out our breakdown of this episodes biggest reveals by clicking here!

I hope we get to see more of both in the future.
President Loki sounded a bit a cartoony, he didn't feel as devilish as Loki from Thor 1 and Avengers. But if his ultimate goal is power and authority, maybe he should be more of a Lex Luthor type.

@MrCamw1 - He was an icon and I'm still mourning the loss. Lokigator is "On site" if it was an alligator. The way he took down President Loki was comedy gold.

I have the same complaint as most people. I know President Loki wasn’t the focus of the episode but however I expected him to be in the episode for more than 3 mins but still it was a spectacular episode overall

I want the backstory of the Mad Max-esque garage DIY Loki with the bicycle handlebars for horns.

@Reeds2Much - I didn't notice, but thats sounds so obscure that you cannot make that up.

I still want Tour de France Loki getting a backstory too (which probably is just another bet)

On one hand, this was the 5th episode and the story is supposedly nearing the end, so focusing on the other variants too much would have slowed things down imo, but on the other hand I really wanted more president loki, especially since he was hyped up so much in some of the early trailers. Kinda disappointing, but maybe he'll pop up again in the next episode or somewhere else (I know it's just wishful thinking but let me dream).

@roboticJohnson - I kinda expect him and his army to show up again next week. Felt kinda rushed leaving them without actually seeing them perish

@BlackBeltJones - I wanna see Kid Loki come back with Gator Loki and Frog Thor to help save the day in the final episode, then they can work Kid Loki into the mainstream MCU for Young Avengers.

@BrettMan - That would be a great team up. Loki, Sylvie, Kid Loki, Lokigator, and Throg. And Kid Loki asks "Do we have a name for this team?" And Loki nods and says "The Revengers" lol.

Since we didn't get an origin for President Loki, I'm just gonna assume he's the Loki that got away with the Tesseract after Endgame. Ofcourse TVA does catch up with him and prunes him, but this way we do have a villain Loki that felt like the Loki from Thor and Avengers.

As for Classic Loki, I'm glad they did gave him a proper backstory (or rather continued one we already knew about). I don't know why he wore the classic outfit, but it did feel in character for him to go out with glorious purpose the way he did.

@bkmeijer - I like to think he's from a 616.5 earth, where everyone looks like their classic Golden Age comic counterparts, but the events being similar to an extent to the MCU timeline.

bkmeijer2 - 7/7/2021, 3:22 PM
@Fares - the MCU if it was as comic accurate as it could be? That does sound like an interesting universe to watch
Fares
Fares - 7/7/2021, 3:38 PM
@bkmeijer - I think it takes more than faithful costumes to reach maximum accuracy. Still, what if WHAT IF?... gives us something like this?
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 7/7/2021, 3:44 PM
@Fares - not gonna lie, that would be pretty sweet.

Even a fan project (like RotS in Clone Wars-style) would be very cool to see.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 7/7/2021, 4:59 PM
@bkmeijer - I think President Loki is a Loki that was never found by Thanos after the events of Thor and instead drifted into a void that landed him in that ruined dimension. He thawed out and continued his reign to rule something.

bkmeijer2 - 7/8/2021, 12:44 AM
@SonOfAGif - thats an interesting take too. Either way, I still like to see more of him
vegetaray
vegetaray - 7/8/2021, 2:35 AM
@bkmeijer - For old Loki, I take his costume as just kind of a visual reference as to how ancient he is and how long he’d been living alone on that random planet…Only reason I say this is because all the characters throughout the MCU have gradually shifted into more comic accurate costumes as things have progressed…Having this variant be decked out in a full on comic accurate costume is just kind of saying, yeah he’s been around for a very long time…

bkmeijer2 - 7/8/2021, 2:50 AM
@vegetaray - yeah that makes sense. Haven't thought about it that way

We have yet to see the trailer shot of Loki in the Asgard throne room. I'm sure that will either be the big reveal in episode 6, or an epilogue where Loki finally gets to rule in his own timeline with Sylvie.

@WarAdmiral51 - Same with the scenes in the dark purplish castle areas with time shards all over the place. Im guessing thats the end of the show.
