Marvel Studios' Emmy Plans Seemingly Confirm HAWKEYE And MOON KNIGHT Won't Be Getting Second Seasons

While Moon Knight has been billed as a "limited series" from the start, Marvel Studios has also seemingly confirmed that Hawkeye was another one-and-done project for Disney+. Read on for further details...

Variety has shared some insights into Marvel Studios' Emmy plans which might just confirm future plans (or not) for some of the shows we've seen from them on Disney+. WandaVision may have missed out on the top prize last time, but it still dominated with 23 nominations, and Kevin Feige and company are understandably looking for the same level of success next time around.

After announcing plans for a second season in the finale's post-credits scene, you probably won't be shocked to learn that Loki will no longer be submitted as a limited series. Instead, it will compete in the highly competitive drama categories, but Hawkeye and Moon Knight will not.

They're each being pushed as limited series; Moon Knight has been billed as a one-off from the start, but fans were hopeful for more Hawkeye after those stellar six episodes. The door is seemingly closed on Clint Barton and Kate Bishop getting another TV team-up as the Television Academy rules and regulations state that, "The program must tell a complete, non-recurring story, and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons."

Aside from Loki, Hawkeye, and Moon Knight, What If...? will be pushed for outstanding animated program.

There are bound to be big plans for Kate Bishop in the MCU moving forward, while we also find it doubtful that Marc Spector's story will wrap up for good a few weeks from now.

It's interesting that Marvel Studios is introducing these characters in their own TV shows, only to seemingly use them as supporting players in other projects going forward. Extended introductions are great, but will it really be that satisfying for the new Hawkeye or Moon Knight to be relegated to sixth on the call sheet in the next Avengers movie? Of course, it's possible they'll get their own movies.

Either way, in Marvel Studios we trust!

I enjoyed Hawkeye. That said, I was indifferent about whether it got a second season.

@tylerzero - She's a prime candidate for 1 shots though.

@tylerzero -
Hawkeye was a handoff from Barton to Bishop so it makes sense that she won't be having ongoing adventures. She will show up in movies and other stuff but not as a solo book, as it were. Same with MoonKnight. Not worthy of an ongoing series but he will certainly appear in movies or other shows down the line.

Loki on the other hand is telling a story that impacts the whole MCU and was far more popular to begin with so it makes sense that they get a 2nd season.

I am wondering if Marvel should not rethink their streaming strategy. In stead of character driven/exploratory streaming shows, they have one off team up films instead. ala Falcon and the Winter Soldier...or a Loki and Hulk team up show, or She Hulk and Daredevil.

@Forthas - I also want the one shots to come back. Long overdue.

@Forthas - I much prefer films in general, but the shows give them a much wider array of talent, diversity, and stories they wouldn't have been able to guarantee seats in a theater for. Plus, they get to tell longer stories (for better or worse).

@Forthas - I think the D+ shows should be used for things like you mentioned. But I also don't want them to be pigeon-holed into one type of show.

I'm fine with what they are doing. But in my opinion, it would benefit by having some series' like What If, where each episode of a season is a single one shot story.

For instance, what's the best way to get the X-Men on the screen as quickly as possible? Creating a show called "The Mutants" and having each episode focus on a different character that will be on the X-Men film's roster.

Episode 1 would be Xavier and serve to explain the history of mutants in the MCU and Xavier creating his dream.

Episode 2 is Cyclops. Showing his parents' disappearance, him and Havok living in an orphanage and leading all the way up to joining Xavier.

Episode 3 is Storm.

And so on. This kind of thing would really help prepare people for the X-Men films and feel like we already know the characters.

Doing things like this lends a lot of meaningful backstory to the MCU. Because for the most part, Loki, WandaVision, and (ironically enough) What If really feels like the only important shows we've gotten. I know Falcon and Winter Soldier established a new Cap, but that seriously could have been done in Captain America 4. I don't really feel like that show was necessary at all. Hawkeye, while enjoyable, again didn't feel needed. And if Moon Knight is a one off series, I'm not real sure how important that is either. I can't see Moon Knight joining a future Avengers team. So unless they make a Midnight Son's project, I'm not real sure where we'll ever see Moon Knight again.

@CorndogBurglar - dude that's so similar to an idea I had for X-Men in the MCU years ago (pre-Disney Plus) - I figured having X-Men as a big budget TV series would allow them to give individual characters the spotlight while also giving some of the bigger storylines from the comics room to breathe when finally adapted. Like if the first season basically explored Xavier forming the X-Men and his school each episode could introduce a new founding member while also having episodes devoted to characters like Mystique or Magneto or whoever. Later seasons could then introduce additional characters to the team like Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Shadowcat and as a series it means the team could pretty much have a revolving door lineup and keep changing as the story necessitates.

Plus imagine epic stories like Days of Future Past or the Phoenix Saga being told across an entire season!

Also yeah I kinda agree about some of your observations on Marvel's Disney Plus shows so far. I enjoyed FATWS but it could've easily been Captain America 4 rather than a series leading up to whatever that movie is going to be, and if Moon Knight really is a one-and-done then unless they greenlight a movie or ensure the character is going to show up in something else as a main player then it all seems a bit pointless. I actually thought the series approach was perfect for Hawkeye though (aside from a few minor missteps imo) so I'm sad that that also seems to be a confirmed one-off.

@Forthas - This is a terrible idea

@AC1 - Oh man, I like that idea of introducing mutants on the show, and then having something of a revolving roster in the movies.

Personally, it would be cool of the movies had a few mainstays, like Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean, and Storm or something like that. But then depending on the movie and the mission, they could take a couple others like Gambit and Rogue, or Colossus and Nightcrawler or whoever fits the mission best. Kind of like Justice League Unlimited!

@CorndogBurglar - yeah I agree, definitely think you'd need a few familiar faces to anchor the series, I'd probably want the team's first outing to be fairly close to the original roster of Cyclops, Jean, Beast, Ice Man and Angel with the addition of Storm and then leave Wolverine for a sequel, but yeah a Justice League Unlimited approach to additional characters would be great! It'd be really cool if the introduction of mutants allows a lot more back and forth between movies and streaming series.

@Forthas - I'm sure they'll do all kinds of stuff with these things as the years roll on. Between the films and D-plus shows, the MCU has come to completely resemble the comics structure with regular and limited series, and I'm sure we'll start to see annual-type one-offs too.

As long as we get more Kate Bishop, I don't mind the how or in what. After those scenes with Yelena, another limited series with both of them could be a good start.

The new Hawkeye/Black Widow team up will certainly pop up on the big screen at some point.

Hawkeye wasn’t very interesting to me. Required viewing I guess
Origame
Origame - 4/15/2022, 9:26 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - it should've been a movie. It was fun when it was built as like a mix of home alone and lethal weapon, but that premise is more suited to a movie as opposed to a 6 episode series so it meanders at points.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 4/15/2022, 9:30 AM
@Origame - and meander it did. I just expected more from renner, Dude just got his family back, forget about Natasha, he needs to be ecstatic, not just barely there. It was too realistic. Be happier than real life!

I’ve never wanted multiple season stories on D+ There’s enough going on so I’m fine with Loki being the only one to get a second season thus far
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 4/15/2022, 8:52 AM
@manofillintent1 - Yeah tell you the truth I don’t care what they do with any of them, whether they get a show, just one season, multiple seasons, or get a movie, sequel, ensemble, Or crossover from TV to movie or vice versa, it’s all fine by me

@TheWalkingCuban - yeah for me it’s like no moon knight season 2? That’s fine how about a movie some time? No FATWS season 2? That’s ok we got cap 4, I just don’t want season after season of the same show.

can't they just wait until the Emmys are done and then they go "sike!" and just make another season? I'm honestly curious.
