MOON KNIGHT Director Reveals What Oscar Isaac Wanted To Do Differently After X-MEN: APOCALYPSE (Exclusive)

After his experience on X-Men: Apocalypse, it wouldn't have been a shock if Oscar Isaac didn't return for another CBM. Thankfully, though, there was something about Moon Knight that piqued his interest...

Throughout his career, Oscar Isaac has ventured into one massive franchise after the next, appearing in the likes of X-Men: Apocalypse, an entire Star Wars trilogy, Dune, and later this year, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - Part One. Now, he's on the cusp of making his entrance into the most successful cinematic universe of them all, the MCU.

Having already dipped his toes into Marvel storytelling with X-Men: Apocalyse in 2016 - an experience that presumably didn't turn out as creatively fulfilling as he likely hoped - it wouldn't necessarily have been a shock if he wasn't in any rush to sign on for another superhero movie. However, as fate would have it, Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios came calling in late 2020 and he soon found himself cast as the fan-favorite Moon Knight.

During our interview with acclaimed director Mohamed Diab, who helmed the series premiere as well as episodes three, five, and six; he revealed his initial pitch to Isaac and how the intimacy of Moon Knight helped convince him to come on-board to topline one of Marvel's wildest projects yet.

"Oscar was exhausted from big movies, he just came from Star Wars, X Men, Dune, and he wanted to do something small. So, to convince him - or something intimate, not small, something intimate - and to convince him that we can do that on a bigger scale wasn't an easy job at the beginning.

Oscar saw my films, and he told me, “Mohamed, what the hell are you doing here?,” because this is exactly what he wanted to do, one of my intimate films, and I told him, it's not exclusive to small films, we can do that on a bigger film.

I think he was my biggest ally through the project, to make this into a character study, to make this into something different and I'm so proud of the result that we have at the end because if you've got all the action, if you've got all the big things, there is still a story. There's a story about someone who's struggling to learn how to live with himself and ironically, I actually feel if you saw my films one day, this feels like an extension of my films. Everyone who knows my films will see episode one, for example, in the premiere, they felt okay, this makes sense. Now, I understand, there is a bridge between this and that.

So, I was lucky to have Oscar with this mindset, because he wasn't a guy who wanted to be with Marvel and just say, “Okay, I get it. I made it. Let's get paid. Let's put on the cape. Let's get the figurine.” No, no, he wanted to do something special and I would say the same thing about me and Ethan, who is a legend in independent cinema and in the independent world and all of a sudden, making the choice to join something like this. So, he needed for himself to have something special. So, the two of them and May, presenting and representing an Arab character, they always brought it on. I always had to be ready and had to always be questioning everything and that made us all work to make the story deeper and better."

Moon Knight starts streaming March 30!

When Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life, he discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.

I have no real interest in Moon Knight, but that's because I'm ignorant when it comes to the character. I don't know anything about him beyond the aesthetic. But Oscar Isaac is an EXCELLENT actor and this director has my interest piqued. I haven't seen any of Diab's films, but I've read interviews, and he comes across as thoughtful and intelligent with a true passion for storytelling. I'm always willing to give someone like that a chance to impress me.

@Reeds2Much -

I just realized that Gary Oldman is saying “Everyone” not “everything”

They should have stopped at Days of Future Past. They fixed the X-Men timeline just to [frick] it up the exact same way.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - They should have stopped after X-men 1, when people realized it wasn't really the x-men anyway

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Ok fine. The opening, what, 3 mins of X2. Then trash the rest.

So the director not only wanted Isaac's, a Hispanic actor, for the role he actively worked to persuade him to do so?

Really adding to the hypocrisy for criticizing the casting of black Adam now.

@Origame - You know, it really bothers me that Diab made all that noise about hiring Egyptians and all that in the name of authenticity, but he didn't hire a Jewish-American to play Moon Knight.

I was halfway willing to overlook this because I thought maybe Marvel was responsible for casting Isaac. But now we see it was Diab that fought to get him in this movie?

That's really not cool. Essentially he's trashing other people for not hiring an Egyptian to play Black Adam, since Black Adam is Egyptian. But he's perfectly fine with not casting a Jewish-American to play a Jewish-American character. And that's somehow fine?

Honestly, screw this guy.

@CorndogBurglar - on top of that, when asked about the Jewish representation, he actually said he didn't care. Even though with black Adam when people pointed out he's not actually Egyptian in the comics he put his foot down saying they gotta take every opportunity for representation.

I'm with you. Screw this guy. Almost wish his show does terribly so we don't have to hear from him again.

@Origame - Yeah...I will still watch it and hope it's great, for the sake of the character. But I'm really not a fan of this guy now. And I'm getting really tired of the flimsy double standard of race swapping characters. It's either all in, or nothing.

Personally, I've always thought that if the actor looks like the character and can convincingly play the character, then I dont care what nationality, ethnicity, sexuality, or gender they are. It's acting, after all. But you can't act like you're some kind of savior by cherry picking what ethnicities get race swapped.

@CorndogBurglar - yeah exactly. Why can't movies just be movies instead of political statements.

And honestly it's not even like the film makers of black Adam had much of a choice. Literally the only reason that movie is getting made is because of the rock.

Man did I just genuinely dislike all of the X-Men movies from FOX.

So happy that shit is over.
