MOON KNIGHT Star Oscar Isaac Says There's A Good Reason For His Weird English Accent In The Show

Moon Knight star Oscar Isaac has addressed his divisive English accent in the first trailer for the Disney+ limited series, making it clear there's actually a good reason why Steven Grant talks that way...

The first Moon Knight trailer definitely impressed fans, but there were those who questioned Oscar Isaac's English accent. Sounding not too much different to Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, some fans were quick to poke fun at the actor's apparent botched take on what a Brit should sound like!

However, as the more astute among you probably guessed, there's a reason Steven Grant sounds that way.

"I stand by the sound of Steven 100 per cent," Isaac recently told Empire Online. "It’s cool [the accent] got people excited, and some were like, ‘That sucks!’ and others were like, ‘That’s great!’ But there are reasons. That voice is about where Steven’s from, where he’s living now, and some of his believed heritage," the actor teased. "It’s not an idea of what Brits actually sound like."

Of course, we know that Steven is really mercenary Marc Spector, and it appears a big part of Moon Knight will be about following the character's journey as he remembers his past life and alter-ego. There are likely to be some surprises in store along the way, and following the mild-mannered gift shop employee on this adventure could prove to be one of Marvel Studios' most original tales yet.

In the same interview, Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater credited Isaac with the idea of playing with the character's accent. "In the initial script, the difference between Steven and Marc was in attitude," he says. "It was Oscar who said, ‘What about an accent?’"

While we wait to find out what happens in the limited series, comments like these certainly help build excitement as this is clearly one of those shows where Marvel Studios is being very selective about what they reveal. We're bound to see more in the coming weeks, though!

Moon Knight premieres on Disney+ on March 30.

The people hating on the accent is so amusing to me. Like... we all know Marc isn't British. We all know this is a fake accent concocted subconsciously by a personality that thinks it's British. Yet people are still critiquing it like crazy.

I think people are too attached to this idea of hyper-masculine gruff action-hero voices for superheroes. If they all sound like that, you end up with flat scenes like Batman vs. Superman where actors are just puffing out their chests and grunting at each other. Especially when people are wearing masks or during ensemble dialogue scenes, it pays to have distinctive voices and tones for as many characters as possible.

When people were complaining about Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock voice, I didn't understand the hate, for example. It was kind of goofy and schlubby, but Brock can be goofy and schlubby (and they leaned into that hard in his portrayal).

I think you could see the danger of going too sharp with Bale's Batman. His Bruce was his normal (American) speaking voice, so he had to try to find something deeper, darker, and rawer for Batman (and it sometimes worked and sometimes didn't because Bale didn't have anywhere else to go except vocal chords on a cheesegrater). Where Kevin Conroy made a concerted effort to bring his voice up to play Bruce, Bale didn't leave himself room to play it more subtle.

(And as everyone already knows anyway, Moon Knight is special. Isaac is probably going to have to dance around personas as Moon Knight, and every trick he has to convey those differences should be utilized.)

And if you want a master class on this... ask the queen.

Maslany played something like 20 characters (many of them with exaggerated accents and affectations to tell them apart, granted), but what was most impressive was watching her play one of the characters pretending to be a different character, because it meant playing out what Character A thought Character B sounded like and their different aptitudes for mimicry. Maslany was often at her best when she did a "bad" impression of herself.

...Man, I'm looking forward to She-Hulk...
