The buzz surrounding Marvel's latest live action films Iron Man 2, Thor and First Avenger:Captain America has been steadily increasing; but the studio is still actively developing another fan favorite comic property, The Runaways. Deadline.com is reporting that Marvel Studios is currently negotiating for Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist director Peter Sollett to helm the film which will be distributed under Marvel's pre-Disney deal with Paramount Pictures.

The Playlist is stating that Joss Whendon, who has recently been linked to Marvel Studio's The Avengers live-action film, is also in negotiations to direct the comic adaptation.

Runaways has been described as The Breakfast Club of the comics world. The story follows a group of teenagers who discover that their parents, an amalgam of mob bosses, time-travelers, dark wizards, mad scientists, alien invaders and telepathic mutants, are part of an evil crime syndicate. The series is known for it's solid characterization and its ability to tackle dark elements (occult sacrifices and gangland violence) while maintaining a comedic tone. The stories take places in mainstream Marvel continuity (one of the youngster's parents is a Skrull) and several major Marvel characters have made appearances alongside the teens.

The film's script was written by Brian K. Vaughan, the creator of the comic series. Though no casting information has been released or rumored, the film has a tentative 2011 release date.

MPP - I'm a fan of Whedon's but when I heard he was being considered as a possible Avengers director I got a bit worried. Runaways, on the other hand, is RIGHT up his alley. He already has loads of experience handling an ensemble cast of young actors in action/teen angst roles. I have no doubt he would make a bad ass film.

Sounds good, but didn't the twilight stars make a movie with the same title, I wonder what they'll call this one.

Maybe it'll be called "Runaways" instead of "The Runaways".

So the script is being written by the same guy who wrote these comics.

Is it a good thing or bad?

You could call it "Marvel's Runaways" or just "Runaways".

@Multi- Yeah I think they will, doesn't Marvel own the rights to it movie-wise? If so then you can bet for an Avengers tie-in or something.

i have a nagging fear that eventually the main populace will tire of what they call "super hero movies".

so I'm wondering, and marketing execs would roast me im sure, if it would just be smarter to market this movie without the "Marvel Studios" banner on it. i just feel like people would be like "what's this? ANOTHER comic book movie? with a bunch of kids? pass"

but if it's just sold as another sci-fi/fantasy movie it might do a little bit better. i feel like if it has the "marvel studios" thing on it people will be like "is it spider-man? no? iron man? no? captain america? no? is it x-men with a bunch of kids or something? pass"

dont get me wrong i'll go see it no matter what it says. i just don't want the market to get over-saturated with these movies so they stop being made.

but i guess at the end of the day as long as its a good movie people will go see it!

Joss Whedon directing this would be very cool...

When ever I think of Runaways I think of Boxcar Children... I don't know why. Haha.

Alex Pettyfer for Chase? Lindsey Shaw for Molly? Ashley Greene with blond hair for Karolina? Possibly Liza Lapira for Nico... maybe?

i dont think directly..(not expecting Sam Jackson to turn up or anything) but yea im sure they will keep it open just enough that they could do if they wanted.

Whedon actually wrote some of this series if i remember correctly... and your right this sort of essembled cast with leading female roles is his sorta thing.

@Multi: Probably not much. If anything, I think Runaways itself well have some nice cameos or easter eggs. I have to say, I love the idea of Joss Whedon doing this film. Pitch perfect!

They're probably gonna have to come up with a new title though since that movie with Dakota Fanning and the Chick from Twilight as Joan Jett is called "The Runaways".

@OdinsBeard: I think it's as you conclude. As long as they're good, people will still see them.

I mean, they've been doing romantic comedies, slapstick comedies, political satire, chase movies, buddy movies, war movies, sci-fi, etc. since movies were invented, so I don't see why this genre should be any different.

Look at Kick-Ass compared to The Dark Knight - technically, they're both "superhero movies" and both excellent films in themselves, but otherwise they couldn't be more different.

Keep it fresh, tell stories about more than just the 'powers' (i.e. the people behind them) and diversify between the big-budget actioner to the low-key character pieces to the quirky, philosophical or metaphysical or whatever, and, like the comics themselves, I don't see why they can't be a staple for generations.

Oh, and a thumbs up for Runaways and especially if Vaughan's written it. I also agree that this suits Whedon far more than The Avengers.

@Joker1Zero: I'd cast Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart IN it, just to [frick] with people's heads. ;)

KeithM@ i guess we just have to put our faith in the main-stream movie going audience. as long as they can weed out the bad and good it'll be fine. and as long as BATMAN, SUPERMAN, SPIDER-MAN and IRON MAN are coming out, it wont matter how many crap films are released cuz everyone loves them some batman!

I've only read Runaways when they've crossed over with the Young Avengers but they seem an interesting enough group of characters! Whedon seems like a great choice to direct this type of movie although I'd rather see Marvel getting on with the likes of Black Panther!!!

With B.K.V. writing the script, it'll be the best that it could be. Now, maybe he'll get around to a script on his very own "Y: the Last Man" that I've heard such great things about.

Considering about a year ago Marvel Studios was hiring writers for these properties:

Iron Fist
Black Panther
Cable
Doctor Strange
Nighthawk
Vision

So they're are still plenty of properties to be included into the cinematic Marvel Universe....the most interesting Cable though, considering hes part of the X-Men Universe...I guess Fox didn't own everything.

saWEET! I could go for some teen superheroes. There are a ton of good young actors so it's the perfect time. I hope they get it done before X-Men: First Class just to set the standard. Make it PG-13 and not some weak tween crap!

but this can't be done without some serious re-tweaking. Cloak and Dagger would have to be removed, separate the universe from the main line since we haven't established the Movie-verse yet. Can't have the skrull, cuz they haven't been established. This has to be seriously redone to fit the means of a movie. Theres a mutant girl, a mage, an alien, a girl with a dinosaur, and 2 norms but one is really smart and the other has cool gloves. I read up to them leaving on the giant frog thing, so thats where the movie might end. I haven't followed since because to me it felt like a self contained story and should have ended their but save them for now as young avengers or initiative members

I am a HUGE Joss Whedon fan and Runaways is one of my favorite comics. This couldn't be better news for me if it pans out. Also to the person who talked about Liza Lapira as Nico Minoru (my fave runaway), and Ashley Greene (very quickly has become one of my fave actresses and one of the most beautiful women on the planet) as Karolina Dean? I'd go see that ten times over just for those two reasons alone. The only thing that could ever be better is Greene playing Shadowcat someday (one could dream lol)
