RUNAWAYS: S**t's About To Get Really Real In The New Promo & Photos For Season 1, Episode 7: "Refraction"

After the events of today's episode, which featured a fun Stan Lee cameo, Alex (Rhenzy Feliz) & Nico (Lyrica Okano) securing some evidence that could put their parents away for life, and a couple major revelations for Karolina (Virginia Gardner), next week's hour will continue to up the ante as the Runaways and the Pride suddenly find themselves in close proximity to one another at Atlas' open house.

Outside of discovering that she could fly, today's episode also confirmed Karolina's feelings towards Nico and it sounds like things are going to get really complicated starting next week. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gardner spoke on Karolina's mostly comic-accurate arc and her evolution throughout the course of this first season. "I think for Karolina, she doesn’t realize that’s how she feels at the beginning of this because the six of them have all lost touch, and we reconnect, and then I meet Destiny, the runaway in the pilot, and she says some stuff about running awa, and having freedom and rebelling that plants something in me that’s like, “Oh, maybe I can try to be my own person now and not just please my parents.” Then, as time goes on, I experiment with Chase a little bit, and I’m kind of like, “Oh, that didn’t really make me happy, and I’ve always been really drawn to Nico,” and then shortly after that, I realize like, “Oh, Chase isn’t what I want. Nico is who I want, and I’m in love with Nico, and I’m not afraid to honor that now.

However, it doesn't seem like it'll be all smooth-sailing for a potential Karolina & Niko relationship as co-star Okano teases multiple possible love triangles, amongst other things. "Nico was very much apart from all of her other friends, more so because she was the one who was very keen on isolating herself from the others. But then Alex made himself available to her from the very beginning, and she’s always had a crush on Alex, and Alex has always had a crush on Nico. So it’s very convenient, they care for each other a lot. But then something happens which causes Nico to sort of distrust Alex once again, and that is when Karolina pops up and is like, “Hey, girl, this is how I be feeling, and do you feel the same way?” And I’m like, “I don’t know, but let’s play around with this.

Yeah, another forced shoehorned-in LGBT romance made me roll my eyes. Nico and Karolina had ZERO chemistry, with both clearly showing signs they play for the opposite team, and now they're going to be lovers? And yeah, I know that Karolina was a lesbian in the books with a crush on Nico, but on the show, it's not convincing at all and felt like it just came out of nowhere. Nico is also not gay in the books, so there's that.

@GAThrawnIGF - I don’t see any signs that Nico will be gay in the show either. And, I don’t believe Karolina’s feelings came out of nowhere: in the first episode she stares in awe for a long time at a dancing lesbian couple.

I still haven't started this yet. I heard it was pretty good though. Might have to catch up over winter break.

Never read the comics but is Molly suppose to be this dumb and annoying?

LoveLoveLove - 12/12/2017, 10:02 PM
@Himura - Kind of, but the comics has the added benefit of her being younger. So, any stupid decisions she makes kind of get a pass.

@Himura - yes! She's always been a little $#!+ that stirs up trouble

@Himura - In the comics she's supposed to be like 9 or 10 years old. In this show they made her 14.

This is way better than many Comicbook Shows. I was pleasantly shocked! Way better than inhumans by miles...

I'm pissed about the staff of one's origins, Idk why they are so afraid of real magic
StormXmen123
StormXmen123 - 12/13/2017, 7:34 AM
@Polaris - I understand that they are routing "magic" in science (as seen in Thor and Dr Strange), so I don't mind them (as the characters) trying to explain the staffs power through science, but I don't like that it isn't a mystical object and simply technology they developed.
Polaris
Polaris - 12/13/2017, 7:42 AM
@StormXmen123 - yes, exactly, I don't mind a scientific explanation of what the staff does, but to say that Tina's company made it? nope.
Kyos
Kyos - 12/13/2017, 8:17 AM
@Polaris - I've only watched the first two episodes so far, so this is new to me. The Staff of One really is a science based artifact developed by a company in the show? Did they also drop the blood magic aspect of summoning of it?
Polaris
Polaris - 12/13/2017, 8:49 AM
@Kyos - sadly, yes, it was made in a lab (as if that's more realistic than magic) and it's designed to respond to Tina's DNA (and Nico's, by extention), so to turn it on instead of a button it needs a blood sample that it gets by sticking a finger with a small needle or something like that. Very dissapointing imo.
Kyos
Kyos - 12/13/2017, 9:44 AM
@Polaris - Okay, that is disappointing. I really liked the diverse backgrounds for the powers present in the comic, and I don't really see how making more of it science-y makes for a more interesting scenario.

I mean, the blood/DNA activation thing is not not clever, but it just feels terribly unneccessary to leave magic magic behind in a universe where we have Doctor Strange, the Hand, the Ghost Rider and such.
Polaris
Polaris - 12/13/2017, 9:59 AM
@Kyos - the diverse backgrounds are what got me interested in the first place, so this sucks. I understand why Gert's parents aren't time travelers, for example, and I'm ok with most of the changes they made, but there was no need for this. Nico was like "this is high tech magic!" so I don't get what's the point of not making it real magic, it was an easier explanation and it makes sense in universe. Now I'm worried about the origin of Karolina's powers.
Kyos
Kyos - 12/13/2017, 10:32 AM
@Polaris - Oh, they didn't really discuss Karolina's powers yet? Hm, let's hope for the best, I guess. I understand why "time travel" and "mutant" are problematic backgrounds, but everything else should be fair game.

Something else: do you watch The Gifted and would you recommend it?
Polaris
Polaris - 12/13/2017, 10:51 AM
@Kyos - Not yet, I mean, at this point it's obvious where her powers came from but not what she is.

Yes and yes, it's pretty good.
Kyos
Kyos - 12/13/2017, 1:03 PM
@Polaris - Then I just hope I still get enjoyment out of the Runaways show, and look forward to giving The Gifted a chance when I find the time. :)
